I am talking about when you sit down at VP or Blackjack and you get a decent win in the first ten minutes of play. The reason I say "the agony" is because I enjoy playing so much I wind up giving most of it back. I actually prefer to be up and down, up and down and then after a couple of hours getting on a hot streak and leave ahead. The only exception and I absolutely love it, is when I am in the HL room and I get way ahead in the first 30 minutes or so. Then I can't get to the cage fast enough. I then go play bartop VP and get drunk as F***.

Same way here. But a lot of times if the win is significant like doubling or tripling the bankroll I will squirrel the original Bankroll away and play conservatively. I do agree with the bartop strategy hit big in HL and high tail it to play 8/5 bonus at The D Lol

I share your agony. I find that this happens often when I play at the tables. My win goal is typically around 30-40% of my buy-in and I can hit this target anywhere between 4-8 winning bets. I'm disciplined enough to usually color in and stop playing but I end up hanging around just watching others playing since I don't want to leave yet.

I don't mind when this happens in Vegas, because I can easily get up and find something else to do, or even find another table to play at. What I hate is when I travel a little over an hour to my closest "local" that has open table games and go up a significant amount quickly, and there aren't very many tables open to switch to. And of course, I end of staying too long and giving most (if not all) of it right back. :grrr:

I don't mind winning fast and doing a hit and run or locking in a win. what I don't like is losing fast the first session and then spending the rest of your time trying to make a comeback

Sometimes I will stop playing and just watch my wife gamble or vice versa. I have no problem sitting there with a drink in my hand and watch my wife gamble. Usually she is luckier than me. Not too long ago I got up $500.00 and stopped. She wasn't done yet so I just sat there drinking Woodford and water. Four drinks later she was up over 8k. Hell yes. No problem with that considering we are normally green chip bettors.

Ha yeah I’ve hit a royal my first hour before and put it all back. My last trip I hit a royal for 2k my first night and ended up down something like 4k the next day. A good run on my last day in the high limit room put me back to even. But that was on slots and could’ve ended very poorly. I thought about staying an extra night but that would’ve been a disaster.

problem for me is I will hit something big and keep going. I sometimes cash out but not always. When I do cash out I also like to play at the bartops but the problem is I can still lose fairly quickly there if I’m on a bad enough run. And with how much I’m drinking I’ll make the poor decision to try again on the floor which never ends well.

I have found that by getting nicer rooms we do that more and more. I have found that when we have a nice room we don't lose as much money. I told my host in Biloxi you messed up. Our suite is so nice we will spend more time in there and less in the casino. We have also started bringing bourbon and wine into our rooms. Before we go on full tilt we will just go up to the room and chill out and enjoy the view,

I don't know... There's something about having just tossed the bags in the room, then heading down to the bartop VP and hitting a big win within 10 minutes. It's like announcing your arrival to the entire city. Give it back, take it up to the room, whatever..... It's only day one!!!!

It took me a lllloooonnnngggg time to figure this out, but I just quit. Sometimes I quit and go home. Yes, go home early while I'm still up.

On the 2014/15 NYE trip, I hit for $8,000 in the first few hours, but couldn't bear the thought of going home early, and I gave it all back and more . . . .

Since then, I have fought through the image of "having no self control", and "too weak to stay", and "couldn't play at a lower rate".

Still, on this trip, I was up $6500, and I took that all home with me.

yeah, it took me many years in my earlier gambling days to learn to quit when ahead, you don't have to gamble 24/7, lock in a win, don't give it back, etc.
now I gamble short, fast and furious sessions so I am not exposing myself to the casino for long hour sessions. the more exposure (time) in the casino, the more the HA has to take hold. I also probably do not max out winning trips as I have already stopped for the trip.

    Easier said then done.

More than once on a 4+ day visit to Vegas, I hit good the first few hours. I am well ahead...maybe a thousand or two.

I am in Vegas to gamble - if I stop after the first evening, then what?

I also stated that it took many years to learn the lesson to quit when ahead. I had plenty of trips where I was way, way up, and gave it back by gambling too long. can't lose every trip as I don't care how big your bankroll is, you have to lock in winning trips.
there is plenty to do other than gamble. I'll spend all day at the golf course, my wife will spend all day at the spa, relax at the pool/ cabana. go have a nice leisurely dinner, get haircuts, etc.
I'm also talking about tens of thousands of dollars, one bet at BJ for me is more than a couple thousand dollars.

Gotta leave when you get some positive variance, easier said then done.
I usually try to find a good stopping point though, usually a point when i can leave happy for the night

"The 2nd worst thing to happen to a new gambler is loosing all their money, the worst is winning"

My very first trip to Vegas, I bought in for $100 at a roulette table and hit several random inside bets and was up to nearly 1k. Thought to myself, what a magical place, and proceeded to give it back over next few days.

Now that I have gotten a little wiser to gambling, I keep winnings in a different pocket than bankroll.

Leaving when I'm up is also my goal, but sometimes hard to do. For some reason, when I set out to gamble that day, I don't really know what else to do. I just keep lingering around the casino, or when I go take a walk on the Strip and pass another casino, I automattically wander in again. On the 10 or so non-gambling days I have no problem at all to entertain and enjoy myself and I just pass by the casinos without thinking of gambling. But on my gamble days I'm drawn into the casinos like some addict lol.

Years ago on a different board this system was passed along. It's for machines, but can be adapted for tables I'm sure. Once he reached his buyin plus 50%, he'd cash out and start over with new money. He'd only cash tickets in at the end of the session. Nothing monumental, but it helps keep you from pissing away bonuses waiting for the next one.
