Road trip will take us to Amarillo on a Sunday. It seems they roll up the sidewalks around 2pm on Sunday and most of the top 50 restaurants on Yelp are closed on Sundays. One of the few that's open is the Big Texan Steak Ranch.

Have you been there? Is the "bang to hype" ratio out of whack or can we get a really good steak there?

It seems like a big tourist trap but if the steaks are good, we're willing to give it a go.

Any other better suggestions that aren't a chain restaurant would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

First off welcome to Amarillo! Most restaurants in Amarillo are open for dinner on Sunday, but if you want something unique to our area the Big Texan is absolutely that.

is it the best steakhouse in Amarillo? No. But it certainly isn’t the worst either. We love taking people from out of state through Big Tex because it’s quite the experience.

Expect a wait for seats because the place is very busy but good news is it’s the largest restaurant in town so waits are usually less than they quote.

Or as they call it down there, "Amarilla", and I have no clue how some people, allegedly including a few women who weigh far less than I do, can eat all of that in one sitting!

Yelp seems to think most restaurants are closed on Sundays?

If you've got a better suggestion I'm all ears! Well, really eyes!

    Thanks!

I went to Tech school in Amarillo in another century when I was in the Air Force. Unfortunately I didn’t get to eat out much. I did like the ladies there.

You weren’t wrong about another century as that based closed during the Lyndon Johnson administration!

Like I mentioned earlier I personally think the Big Texan is a great restaurant because it’s experience is at another level. If you want something different I’ll need some more information. The outdoor musical Texas is performed in the Palo Duro Canyon and offers a chuck wagon dinner before the show. They have a few more Sunday performances before they close for the season.

Same! I live a bit south of Denver, so Amarillo is only a 6 hour drive. I was dating 2 different women down there...good times. I love Amarillo and would love to live there one day.

Anyway, The Big Texan is not great, imo. I went once, and the steak (a ribeye) was meh, but I did get sick from it. Portions are good though. It is a unique experience, so you might enjoy it.

Tyler's BBQ is amazing, highly recommend it!. I drove down one weekend just to get BBQ from there.

Also make sure to try Whataburger, if you haven't. Their breakfast is pretty good too (Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit!) and the milkshakes are delightful.

Pikers. YouTube has a video of mega eater Molly Schuyler downing 3 complete 72 oz. steak dinners in 20 minutes. Her channel is full of such feats, and she makes Joey Chestnut and Micki Sudo look like amateurs.

Unfortunately, Tyler's is closed on Sundays.

I live in Texas, so I'm well familiar with Whataburger. And, frankly, I'm not a fan. Sorry.

    Appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

Thanks for the feedback. I'm on a long road trip and this is my first stop so really not looking to do much, just have dinner and get a good night's sleep for the next day's journey. The music and chuck wagon dinner sounds like a fun time though!

    No-no-no!
If you're going to get a breakfast at What-A-Burger, here is the "correct" order:
1 Sausage BOB (Order it that way - they'll think you're from Texas)... it's a fried egg, good spicy sausage & cheese on a bun...& outstanding!
    1 Sausage Taquito

If you must have a biscuit, try the jalapeno-cheddar biscuit with egg, sausage & cheese! Yum!

Don't tempt me to make a day trip down to Amarillo. Because I will.

You can hit a casino on the way down in the panhandle of Oklahoma. Just outside of Guymon. What’s better than a What-a-Burger and casino run!

If you end up going let us know how it was. Interestingly people traveling through on I40 make up 60% of the city income on the city budget. So thank you for stopping in!

Which one? I visited WinStar once on my way back from Houston. Whataburger and a casino (and some bbq) has me written all over it.

It’s called Golden Mesa. It’s in the Oklahoma panhandle. It’s not huge but it’s perfect for a day trip quick stop.
