Leaving for Vegas in a few weeks and expecting to find lots of $5 tables.
Ok, seriously...I am probably expecting $15 and $25 tables.
Normally play the $5-$10 table and rarely play more than hour and my bets are Pass line with minimal odds, but also the 5,6,8.

You can figure just over $100 out on the table at any time if on a $25 table (Pass line, 5,6,8). If I had $350 and there are 3 quick 7 outs then I am done. Best not to continue on a table this cold.

For those low rollers forced to play on the higher limit tables, what is the minimum you buy-in for at these higher table limits?

The pros on this board will tell you to ditch the 5,6,8 and instead place it on the odds for the pass line.
If you don't have a $1,000 buy-in, you are the sucker that casinos love. Between the variance and the house edge on your original bets, you would be better off playing slots with a small bank roll.

    I do 500 buy in on a $15-25$ table.

    I just do passline w/ odds, 6,8.

I play less than 1 hour sessions like you.

I could buy in for 1000-2000$ if i wanted to, but if its going that bad and i lose my 500, i'm out of there anyway looking for another table.

I like buying in super light (relatively) and whipping out extra hundreds rebuys at appropriate times as long as I’m having fun. Ymmv. I’ve surprised myself with getting to all the numbers pressed with 4 chips, no chair at a $25 min table, dealer bets all the way.

Whilst there is a case for taking 100x your pass line bet to the table (to cover variance of rolls), many don’t rock up to a $25 table with $2,500. So what to carry to the table? Well, the one key thing to remember is that you are governed by the outcome of the dice. You can get lucky.

I still recall a time at the Monte Carlo, where it was 3am and I was down to my last $26. It was a $10 table. I had to lay a pass line down to roll, being the only person remaining. I was angry at myself having lost a significant bankroll over the trip, and I didn’t think much of $26 ! So I flung the dice down to the pyramids each time during the roll. Hard. And fast. And pressed the number 6, which is all I could cover apart from the pass line. I didn’t stop. The dealers were willing me on! I pressed to every number first, and when I was in a position to press actual numbers, for every $10 cheque in the rack (the change from pressing), I’d also play the field. I just kept pressing with the rolls that were literally non stop, maybe 5 second gaps between my rolls. I think I hit points, and then hit points with odds behind later. I recall rolling for 15 minutes, flinging the dice in a totally random manner. When I finally sevened out, I counted the Cheques that were thrown onto the chip racks by myself during the roll. $2,300. From $26.

So, anything is possible. You just got to get lucky.

For a $350 bankroll on a $25 table, I’d probably play like this:
Wait for the point to be established, with no pass line.
    Then place the 5,6&8 ($85).
Make 3 hits first and collect.
If I’m still going, then on the next win, place the point (if it isn’t 5,6 or 8), or place the 9. Then build through half presses every roll you hit a number: And keep going. You’re basically hoping for a longer roll through this strategy but playing with money won on your first 3 hits.
As long as you can collect 2 bets each time from the start after the come out roll, you’ll lose $25-30 only, so your bankroll will last longer. You’d be really unlucky to lose your $350 bankroll in 4 player rolls (point seven out). Eventually, you’d want enough winnings to cover the pass line bet and then take odds, because the come out roll resolves 12 from 36 outcomes and it’s 2:1 in your favour to win against losing the pass line, with the alternative to establish a point number. It’s all about luck of the dice however, but you’re there to gamble, right?! Knowing to press numbers is also important, otherwise you’ll just grind away.

Then again, many solid craps players would advocate a 3 number take down, so you hit 3 numbers and take down your bets until the next shooter is up. Well…you can still get horribly hurt doing that as well, because of the 6 / 36 chance of the 7 showing up. For me, I don’t fly 7000 miles to Vegas to make wins on 3 numbers and then wait or walk. I’m there to play.

There’s also the matter of comps through rated play. You’d be far more likely to achieve some level of comps if you are playing at the $85 level then you would at the $34-54 bet per roll level.

Hope that was amusing and I trust it helps you a little. $15 tables are easier to play than $25 purely because of the field bet minimum (in case you like a bit of the Iron Cross strategy and want to win on every roll except the 7). It’s easier to press the inside numbers a unit or two to stay ahead of a field bet loss when the inside hits, and use field bet wins to press the inside numbers. I guess I’m just advocating an aggressive press strategy all over. But you can’t wait it out on a $350 bankroll on a $15 or $25 table.

And sometimes you need to sit out a few rollers and put your money where your throw is. Then you know exactly who to blame if it vanishes.

… the late bettor or mid roll buy in guy of course.

I hope we get to play side by side at the Golden Arm tournament. You can blame me instead.

For a limited bankroll. Play one session instead of two/three..

You want to give yourself a fighting chance with variance.

Agree on limiting the sessions. Or play the bubble for your smaller sessions.

I always hit and run craps, either I go and make a huge score like 5x my buyin or lose quickly due to hard way bets and press big in the first number hits.

I like to have about 10 to 12 units give or take on the table once a point is established, so my strategy is find somewhere with a $5 table (still a few out there) lower my number of bets significantly at $10 tables, and 99% of the time, play bubble or electronic bet craps with the rest of the peasants if its over 10.

Seriously though, if you want to take big risks, I've watched some videos on the YouTubes about managing 150 to 300 buy in on $15, but they pretty much all are based on placing the 6 and 8 or pass line and field, and hitting at least twice before a loss, and if that was reliably possible, a $60 bankroll would last forever at $25 minimums, and you could go home a gazillionaire. So I dont out much stock in that.

I usually buy in to $5 tables at 300+, so 60 units. That would be 900 on a $15 table and $1500 on a $25 table, and even at 60 units I've taken some pretty big hits in the first couple shooters, but I like to play iron cross plus pass line with max odds, or sometimes a 3 point with max odds on all 3, which is why I mostly only play $5 tables. 100 units buy in, and a little more self-control than I have, is even better to have a lasting good time. I'd agree with folks saying play fewer sessions but also, you want to be entertained for some period of time for that kind of money even if the house wins, so tread carefully.

If you are playing on a "higher" demonination table with a less than preferred bankroll amount, then you might alter your playing/betting stategy ...knowing that the "odds" that govern the game are derived from an infinite number of rolls...you're probably not going to employ traditional or optimal strategy (whatever that might be) since your usual playing session time is relatively short(1 hour or less)... An earlier post, #5, seems to offer a hit and collect type of play ...catch a few place bet numbers (then call your bets off) to increase your bankroll and stay in the game ....

I'm normally a $5 or $10 player and buy in for $300-$500. Was at Venetian in May and jumped on a $25 table with $300 buy in. No pass line bets. Placed the 6 and 8 every roll for $30 each. Lasted only about 35-40 minutes. Had a couple of spurts but never got up more than $150. Was trying for a $250-$300 win. A couple of streaks of 3 or 4 PSO's did me in. Got 2 beers and watched some basketball on the screen above the table. Was fun to back on a table but I think I'll look for some $10-$15 tables next time! Good Luck!

Good to read I am not alone.

I have previously read its best to buy in with the amount you play as your buy-in gets documented. Those extra hundreds don't get registered within your comps.

    Good info here. Thanks.
I like the idea of no Pass Line bet when not shooting and only working the place bets.

Actually did this my previous trip and it was a blast, but would like to squeeze in an extra session or two.

I only get to vegas twice a year and tend to play at an empty table to maximize dice time.
To me, getting to toss the dice for 35-40 minutes at a table would be a blast.

Curious about the bankroll math here. If I buy in for $250 three times (let's say on 3 separate trips) and bust out and the last $250 I quadruple back to $1,000 how is that different than just buying in with $1K to start? I also just run terribly on craps but never thought of bankroll implications.

Out of all the craps sessions you’ve played. How many times have you quadrupled your buy-in? That’s the math….

I like the bubble craps suggestion. Lower minimums and the opportunity to play the darkside without irritating the guy next to you.

I was teaching a few first-timers and they definitely caught on that someone a few chairs over was playing the dark side against them since the game still makes cheering noises. :haha:
