It's also not just a direct money matter. All of those low-yield customers add to ambiance of the casino. They add to the noise level. They add to the crowd factor. They add to the excitement of being there amongst the crowd factor. If the casino is 'dead' Boyd's better-rated players aren't going to want to play there.

 

I agree. Unrated players are still money walking in the door. Why would you want to discourage them from playing?

 

Maybe they are referring to the Ruby level players, who don't receive bconnected points? Is there any other players club that doesn't give it's bottom level points for play? If I was going to play at a Boyd property and didn't think I'd make Sapphire in the time I was there there's no way I'd even get a players card.

 

I would. I'm a super low roller and my B Connected card and extremely low level play was getting me free and discounted rooms for a while. I'm going to put in some play on my July trip just to see if that happens again.

 

Yes, I see what you're saying. I dropped to Ruby until recently and they are still offering 3 comped nights. But if I was a customer walking in the door for the first time, maybe that wouldn't occur to me, especially if I was just dropping by for a few hours of play. I'm not convinced that those room comps aren't still the result of empty casinos during covid. If now that they're back in business the room offers dry up I'll know they didn't really love me that much after all. Good luck in July!

 

I have a Sapphire card and will likely maintain that. My wife dropped to Ruby and we stopped playing on hers completely. Our trips are long and we play a lot of VP. On an average summer trip (2 weeks) 8 nights used to be at Boyd properties. Since they made the changes to the players club we are down to an average of 2 nights. The top line revenue they have lost from the two of us is roughly $70,000 (coin in not hold) per trip. What does that mean on the bottom line for them? I can't quantify that as easily but I can't be the only one with a change that dramatic.

 

As a local from Hawaii, I've already decided to ditch the Cal for Cosmo. We used to be loyal to Cal/MSS but since they're not opening MSS & Cal's tables aren't open all the time (not to mention the increased minimums) it doesn't make sense to stay there anymore.
I've realized the amenities, comps & overall experience is so much better at Cosmo. The only downside is the crowd is not as laid back.

I'm thinking along the same lines also. I won't abandon Boyd completely, I still have affection for the Cal and it's sister Downtown properties but probably will split my time there and a nice local casino, maybe Red Rock, GVR, or M Resort.

I mean if I have to play $15 craps minimums I might as well stay at a nicer place with real amenities.

 

Unrated gaming in the last ~15 months has been driven by the people who were going to Vegas through the COVID pandemic. They weren't the usual crowd - they didn't go to Vegas frequently, weren't casino regulars and didn't have (or care about) cards or comps. The city was cheap enough as it was. Often, they didn't know how to play the games well so their play was probably particularly profitable for all casinos. All of those fine people who were gleefully hitting hard 13 on a 5. And, as Boyd's regulars are, on a whole, older folks who stayed home through the pandemic, that unrated play probably looks quite sizeable against the rated play. I stopped in on a night.

I'm one of the 'low level' players Boyd is snuffing. I'm not particularly butt-hurt about it. I could get a room for 2-3 nights and a $10 food comp on low-hundreds of dollars of bet in on low-variance table games ($5 BJ, $10 PGP) and drank as much comped red ale as I possibly could. There's literally no way I was profitable. They should have cut me off years ago. Not saying that's the case for everyone who didn't make the cut. But I've been shamelessly abusing them for years and they've finally had enough. Good for them. They were great for adding a few cheap days to my trip, but the only thing I'm going to miss from them is the 777. That place was rock solid.

 

A rare honest self evaluation. I'm kinda in the same category, but Gold Coast, I think I can still get two nights at GC.

I could go for some 777 food and brew right now.

I know this is sacrilegious but a lot of times I don’t even use my players card. If I do I do if I don’t I could care less. My play wherever I’m at doesn’t warrant me a whole lot. Whatever the casino offers me I can easily pay for myself. Yes I occasionally get discounted rooms or the occasional free night or two but so what ? It doesn’t matter to me, and as far as the changes to the players club. I could care less.

Fall is a fairly vague timeline, but at least its an official comment.

I just feel someone downtown has to open a good buffet. Too many customers looking for a fast, relatively good, reasonably priced meal. Ridiculous the lines we are having to stand in to get seated at some of the coffee shops and even the better restaurants.

 

I know like every other casino in Vegas they are trying to attract a younger crowd but I really think that Boyd is making a mistake cutting their buffets if that's their intention. While it may work at places like Gold Coast or Orleans where you'll go to one of their other food outlets to eat it won't work downtown as you'll leave the building and go elsewhere. Although I only go to them at breakfast when they first open for the day the buffet is kind of a standard of Vegas. Just start charging more but Boyd shouldn't ditch them. (Port of Call in the Gold Coast is absolutely gross.)
