+1. I wish I could have hit both the “agree” and “funny” emoji buttons but the “smell burning pants” line made up my mind for me.:clap::clap:

And it gets dark SO early for many months! But that said, I was surprised that Hawaii was way darker than Alaska!

Years ago, I was meeting with some pilot friends and met some aeronautics students that transferred from U of North Dakota's program to Metro State's in Denver. They asked "Why don't you guys binge drink around here?"
I just shrugged and said "Sorry?" Yup, We are slackers apparently, in comparison anyway

I remember calling a hotel once in Lake Geneva Wisconsin to ask if the bar was open in the afternoon before dinner. The lady said, “this is Wisconsin, the bar opens at 9 in the morning!”

We can't buy hard liquor in a bottle after 9 pm and on Sunday and some holidays--Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years day. It is only available at package liquor stores. -- This is not because of tee-totalers. The package stores hold a big lobby - they do not want to be undercut by the likes of Walmart. We can't buy beer or wine after midnight and before 8 am at convenience stores or grocery stores Monday-Friday. Saturday we have the luxury of buying it until 1 AM but then we have to wait until 12 noon on Sunday. Bars that are strictly bars - no food can open at 7 am every day of the week including Sundays last call 2 am. You can buy a Margarita at a restaurant at 7 am except on Sundays not until noon. Covid restrictions changed things so the rules changed. Bars started serving food so they could open during closings.

Counties have some weird restrictions too. We have some dry counties that limit how much alcohol you can have in your possession. Technically in Tyler Texas if you are caught with more than 24 - twelve ounce beers you can be arrested for bootlegging with a presumed intent to sell -- also you can't have more than a quart of hard liquor. I'm sure it is not enforced.

There are still some dry counties in Kansas, not too far from where I live. In fact, I believe Kansas is the only state in the Union that still has not ratified the 21st Amendment.

Apricot brandy was the spirit of choice when i used to Nordic ski in Wisconsin. A lot of the bars looked like someone just opened one in their living room and put up an Old Style sign by the road.

When I first moved out here, it was beer and wine only on Sundays with limited hours and access.

A little background info to help explain Wisconsin: technically it is legal for a parent to buy their under 21 year old child liquor in a bar or restaurant. How often it happens, I think probably too often.

According to the Department of Revenue, under Chapter 125 of the WisconsinStatutes, “An underage person accompanied by a parent, guardian, or spouse of legal drinking age may be sold or served alcohol beverages in any licensed premises

I call BS on my county. We drink too much to be merely middle of the road. At least my circle does ;)

Most everyone in Wisconsin has an uncle, cousin, brother, friend, some in-law, a co-worker, that has or still owns a tavern. My ex was raised in a small town of 245 people. There were 7 taverns. Hence the ex. :) I notice it changing a bit though. Not as many Mom and Pops now. In my tad larger community, when I could finally "hit the bars" back in the day, found out two local bars were owned by teachers still teaching. LOL Too true. Oh, and many of those corner taverns have THE best Friday fish fries!!! Yes, kids are there too in many if they serve food.

And the kids don't need the parent's permission... they parent just has to be there.

This causes lots of problems at weddings and such. Wanna know how I know?

This thread is so up my alley. I am born and raised in Madison Wisconsin. The Packers and Badgers are pretty much like a religion there. I eventually opened a couple of pizza franchises in Beloit and Janesville. Long story short I bought a tavern in Beloit, which I had for 21 years. Eventually moved to Iowa.
So the point of all this is I feel I am an expert at reinforcing the notion that Wisconsin is a state of drunks. There have been numerous articles and memes showing the drunkest cities in the US. Usually, Wisconsin holds 8 or so of the top 10. I think the last one I saw was all Wisconsin except for either Ames Iowa or Iowa City (can't remember) and Bakersfield Ca.
Ironically I moved to Iowa and now live between Ames and Des Moines. Doing my best to represent!
You know the Wisconsin winters are long, and there is a bar usually nearby. Winter sports are popular, indoor pool, darts, and cards are very popular.
I miss Wisconsin and the low beer and liquor taxes. Iowa is way more expensive.

What I learned about Wisconsin came from those old commercials ...

(Bell attendant in elevator with checking-in guest) ...

So? Where ya from, Mr. Smith?
    Wausau.
    Where's that?
    Wisconsin.
    Oh, welcome to America!

    or ...

(Taxi driver making small talk) ...

    So? Where ya from?
    Wausau.
Hey, I got an uncle from there! ... Or is it Krakow? ... Maybe you know him, Paul Zukowski?

    (Please throw soft stones.) :)

We still have to buy our liquor through a gov't owned retailer! At least they are open on Sundays now. When I was young, there was not even self serve liquor. You had to fill out a form and bring it to the counter, get the once over and the clerk would retrieve your bottle. Only very recently we got limited beer and wine in grocery stores.
