I have an offer for a couple free nights at the Tropicana while I’m already in town. I routinely stay & play on Fremont St, but thought one night of different scenery might be fun. I like lively casinos (the D, Golden Gate), so how will the Tropicana stack up? Is there a good steakhouse there?
Never been inside. They just changed ownership, so changes may occur soon, if you want to experience in current format. Also, not exactly certain of timing, but that end of Strip is going to be traffic-difficult soon. The Resorts World opening this Summer is supposed to coincide with completion of all the road work for that north section of the Strip. Not certain, but I think the section south of Tropicana Rd is next on the LVB road renovations list. If I'm correct, staying sooner may be better than staying later.
Casino is definitely not "lively", usually the opposite. Have seen it busy when they were hosting a convention. Casino is very bright, a lot of white. Base rooms have a tub (peeling paint) and no refrigerator, I'd compare to maybe a Park MGM room if never remodeled? Clean, but old and in need of remodeling. Also film over windows I find annoying. Dining options are mostly carry out, but their steakhouse recently reopened on weekends. Some of their offer give generous food credit. Not sure when the sale will complete to the new company (Bally's Inc. (aka Twin River)) . I have an offer I might use or burn if they will waive resort fees. No idea what the new company will do with the place...
Vegasvstr is being very nice. Tropicana could not get any less lively. I've been visiting twice a week simply to play off the free play they are giving me ($240 in $30 increments). To make matters worse, there is no longer any playable VP as all of the single DDVP are now 6/5. You might be able to get something to eat or drink on a weekend, but forget about Mon-Tue. The pool is nice and if you are not paying the resort fee maybe this would be a good transition home from Las Vegas although it is somewhat akin to taking a nap on the plane ride home which probably serves the same purpose. An aside, traffic is not an issue.
Location is best thing about the trop to me, ease of parking for a strip hotel is second. If the second best thing about a strip resort is it’s parking, well, that’s not great as far as I’m concerned! As far as being a lively casino, I’m having a tough time coming up with a less lively one on the strip. I stayed there three nights a cpl weeks ago just because it was comped and I didn’t feel guilty not giving them much play and I don’t care if I get anymore offers or not. The blackjack is awful there, only two tables open 4/7-4/9 and one was 6/5 other one was double deck with $25 minimum so ehhh. If I can answer any questions I’ll try for you...
I stayed a couple of years ago. All I remember was that the room reminded me of the rooms at MSS downtown, simple with slatted window covers instead of shades. The only time I went into the casino I was there 5 minutes and all of the bloody people from the Route 91 Harvest music festival came storming in from the shooting. Everything in my memory is a blur after that but I do know that I never stayed on site for the 3 days. Room to car to anywhere else during my stay.
I concur with those above who said it's definitely not a lively casino -- last time I was there, probably a year or so ago, someone was sleeping across a row of video poker chairs. I don't think I saw a single person actually gambling. That said, I don't understand why. It's on one of the biggest intersections in Las Vegas; hell, it shares its name with the street! They renovated the place, cleaned it up, it's easy to get in and out of. But the place attracts like no foot traffic to speak of. Even thinking about my own travel, I always go from Excalibur to NYNY to MGM (and often stop in NYNY), never Excalibur to Tropicana to MGM. It can't be the "unplayable" games because people play those all over the Strip.
agree with this! Pretty much anytime you go next door OYO, there are 10 times more people playing (and it's still fewer than 10 people in total). So you know how many in Tropicana.
I saw that, currently...Trop and Go is open every day, serves breakfast all day, steak and eggs is $19. Asian restaurant is dinner only on Thurs-Sun and the Steakhouse is Fri-Sun only. Generally they're offering Trop rooms Sun-Thursday nights for $37/night before fees and taxes or $64/night before fees and taxes with $50/day resort credit which can only be used for F&B. If I stayed here, I'd probably arrive on a sunday, have dinner at the Steakhouse which has a $55 pre-fixe menu which includes a single glass of house wine. Have the $19 Steak and Eggs Monday and Tuesday for breakfast and the total bill would already be $103 before tax and tip. Pretty good way to exhaust the credit, can have lunch or dinner next door at Hooters.
