13 days at the Longhorn casino and hotel

My great apologies because I don't remember. I'm sad about it. I do, however, remember you as a fine and regular poster. Glad to be in touch again. Sorry, my brain now requires a blog to remember anything.
That was one thing that was such a treat in Vegas. As long as I went slow and took time to think and rethink, I could manage the trip both physically and mentally.
And I am remembering the video poker strategies well enough to play.
To put this in perspective, we have regular driveway parties here in Florida, and I went to one I rarely attend. I apologized to one woman because I could not remember her or her name. She is my neighbor, roofmate as we call them, and our houses share a wall.

It seems to work for me. It was May 1, 2008. There are photos of Laughlin as well.
I loved the old Laughlin, and I might go back for the day again, but it is so sad now. I keep up with Laughlin Buzz on Facebook and most of the regulars are sad, but they sure put up some grand pictures and videos.

 

Not a big fan of trip reports, but yours was enjoyable to read. You've given me a new perspective of the Longhorn ... we stayed there one night long ago, and I said never again...but then maybe they deserve another chance. Stay healthy, and yes I can relate to slowing down, too. The Chuckwagon sounds like our kind of restaurant...Sam's Town down the highway a bit has nothing like that.

Wow. Those are really old posts. Are you near Turning Stone? If I drive up, I like to go to Rome and eat at The Savoy Restaurant. Great old fashioned place and good food.

Funny thing, there was a poker brush at Turning Stone who read my blog. Good thing I was mostly positive.

 

Dewey: I'm afraid the link didn't take me to the right place, but after you reminded me, I found my ancient Laughlin post at www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?threads/laughlin-question.99008/#post-859147 I'm pretty sure 2008 is correct, but your blog report is dated May 01, while my VMB references summer. Minor details! Maybe we'll meet up again before much longer.

 

I expect the Longhorn will not meet the needs of many folks. It certainly is not fancy. So, I don't want to oversell it. Few going to Vegas want such a low key, local experience. I just can't rise to the strip or downtown anymore. My favorite was always the Orleans. But B Connected just doesn't pay for me anymore. No free rooms. If it did I'd go there for a few days, perhaps, but really I expect I'm not set up to hop around very much these days.

Not even close, live in Houston and have been spending a few months a year in France.

I’m from Rochester and been to TS a few times. Use to work for GE in Schenectady and use to like to stop in Utica on my way from Schenectady to Rochester.

 

Thanks for the wonderful report. BTW it is always great to see another fisherman who enjoys the nature coast. I live in Plant City and frequent Homosassa and Crystal River. I love The Plantation, The Freezer, MacRae's and Crackers.

Thanks for your blog report Dewey. I've learned and utilized many travel techniques you have shared with us. I love the Longhorn area and have used it as my base for many Vegas trips. Once I mastered the bus system, the locals experience obtained from that area can't be beat. (Sam's Town, Eastside Cannery, Longhorn, Walmart, Chase bank) I also like to do Vegas in 10 day to 2 week increments. My wife on the other hand is a Strip person with shorter travel days. Vegas has something for everyone. I'm so happy to see your report and can't wait for my next trip.

 

We are not Freezer fans, but then I can't have smoked mullet anymore. The others are favorites as well as Charlie's where I can get escargot for appetizer and oysters sauteed in their own juices (this one is not on the menu, but they have never said no) And if you want really crispy fries get Kristin as a waitress or just ask another waitress to order them "just like Kristin likes her fries." She calls them "burnt" but they are just good and crispy.
It is so hard to get oysters that are not raw or deep fried. The raw seem dangerous; the deepfried seem an attempt to hide the oyster flavor. So, I love the cooked in juices.
For a few years we had a rental at Trade Winds on Homosassa and a pontoon for the ridiculous price of $350 and then $550 a month. Then the Bush recession ended and the rental rates went to five times what we were paying when we were the only ones they could find to rent. So, we tried other places, and finally my wife bought this attached villa in Meadowcrest. I miss the water, but it is risky to buy near the water. I get it. We'll be fishing with two different guides in the next month, sharing with neighbors here.
I miss the water, but it would be hard for me to manage the large pontoon. I can't swim with manatee and get up the ladder anymore. I make some mental mistakes, so I could see me ruining a propeller. At any rate those deals are gone.
And we have the most wonderful neighbors, from all over the country, who live here full time or are snowbirds like us.
One is coming today for my homemade jalapeno poppers, some turkey, and some grilled Scottish Salmon from Shelly's in Homasassa, where we buy most of our fish.
Another likes to go recumbent bike riding with me. I can't ride a bike anymore, but I can ride this contraption.

Up North I live on a little lake called Burden Lake half way between Albany, NY and Pittsfield Mass. I have a very small electric pontoon. I'll be fishing almost every day there in June.
But I am still a child at fishing. I'd rather have a dozen bluegills than anything. Bass are fun, but I toss them back as it is much better for the lake.
I'm a low roller, just as I am in Vegas.

 

Wow! I have not found too many who have been to the Longhorn. Do you think I will get room offers? I played quite a bit of video poker.

 

Dewey, I don't know about comps at the Longhorn. I stay there but don't gamble there. In my opinion they (Longhorn) has the best locals bar in Las Vegas. Like you, I appreciate the cafe (great barbecue platter). The only game I play is craps so Sams Town & Eastside Cannery were my gambling destinations along with downtown. Sorry to see the Eastside Cannery closed, which also had a great craps game in the evenings. I would not be surprised if you Did receive some sort of room offer from the Longhorn.

 

Must have been related to all those Fireballs! (And, you know who was the real Suckahhh at your poker table - the guy who didn’t have the chair move ticket.)

My wife lived many years in Rochester. She was in private practice as a therapist there. I love the city. It was so sad that Kodak closed, and that it did not go much for employees who were let go, even those with a long experience of working there.
France?? Nice. I expect it has been hard to get there these days. I have a buddy who sold everything and lives with his wife on a sailboat traveling North and South here in good weather, and going to France in the winter. We did the Southern Viking route and really enjoyed ourselves. I like Paris. I don't speak French, but my first wife did back around 1970 and we camped all up through France in our VW bus. I was in the airforce and stationed at Torrejon, Spain. In those days the French were pretty hard on those of us who only spoke English, like me. But that seems to have all changed. I loved the Shakespeare and Co. bookstore in Paris, and of course NotreDame. I am a great fan of escargot and of steak au poivre. I expected to get a taste of both at MonAmiGabe, but somehow eating solo just did not justify the expense. Sam's Town and Boulder Station have escargot and steak au poivre on the menu, but I forget who has what. I think Sam's Town just has the sauce over sirloin tips.

 

Finally had the time to read all of your report! So glad it all worked out.....I know there was much planning involved. On my Feb trip I found myself without an appetite for a few days...my frig was awesome for tucking away a sandwich and tiramisu!
