    My Trip Report

What can I say? Every trip to Vegas is special, whether meeting family, friends, or just going to gamble -- you always experience something unique. On my most recent trip, it seems like the stars aligned for me to have the perfect Vegas trip. I had extremely good luck, ate delicious food, and had some great times hanging out with family.

The three cast members in this trip report are myself, my uncle, and his girlfriend. I am a law student at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, while my uncle lives in Keams Canyon, AZ, and his girlfriend resides in San Dimas, CA. There isn't a direct flight out of the Northwest Arkansas Regional airport to Vegas, so I normally fly Allegiant out of Springfield, Missouri. I was flying out on the 20th while my uncle and his GF were flying in from Phoenix on Saturday morning. The drive from my apartment in Arkansas and Springfield normally takes between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 hours, but I always leave several hours early in case of any problems. Well, for once, leaving early paid off. About 1/4 of a mile from the Arkansas/Missouri border, I was pulled over by two overzealous sheriffs deputies and grilled. I assume I fit some type of profile for a drug trafficker. After the uniformed officer asked for my drivers license, I noticed a plain clothes officer get out of the car and ask me to step to the rear of the vehicle. After being told to keep my hands in plain view, they grilled me with such questions as "Why aren't you flying out of Tulsa?" to which I responded "I got a better deal and a direct flight out of Springfield." Then they asked me "How much did you save?" Then they asked "Are you going to Vegas by yourself?" to which I responded "Well, I am flying alone but meeting my uncle and his girlfriend." At this point they asked what my uncle and his girl's name is...I wanted to ask them what the hell it mattered, but told them their real names. Then they asked to search my car -- I knew I didn't have to let them do it, but I heard a dog barking in the back and didn't want to mess with them getting it out to sniff. After a search they let me go. I thought to myself: "Damn, I hope this isn't an early indicator of my luck in Vegas!"

Anyways, eventually I made it to the airport in plenty of time and had a relatively uneventful flight to Vegas. I sat next to a lady that is an executive at the Venetian, she was really nice, talked about how exciting her job was and how normal her daily life was outside of work. Told a funny story about how her relatives never believe that people actually live in Vegas. When I landed at McCarran, I dropped a few bucks in the slots (yeah, yeah, I know...these are the tightest in town. Who cares? It's just too hard to resist gambling at an airport!) and didn't win a damn thing (okay, maybe it is dumb to play slots at the airport!).

I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel for the first time -- I was amazed at how quickly I got to my hotel. I hopped into the cab and sat out for my luxurious room at the Tropicana Avenue Motel 6. I heard a groan from the cabbie when I said "Tropicana Motel 6 -- don't take the tunnel." We whizzed away from the airport and I made it to Motel 6 only to stand in line behind a lady that was irate at Motel 6 for not letting her cancel her reservation on a night when she had double booked herself at another property. I shot the guy working at the desk a look like "Can you believe this broad?" and we both damn near lost it -- but luckily we were able to keep from laughing long enough for her to exit the lobby. My room at the Motel 6 smelled like a rhinoceroses asshole, but it was only for a few hours sleep anyways.

I walked down to MGM Grand to play some 4/8 limit hold 'em. I had a great time, made about $115 profit in 4 or 5 hours, and got completely SMASHED.
A few years ago, I got an idea from someone on the board to take $2 bills to tip the cocktail waitresses with. I always get a bundle of them from the bank before every Vegas trip. Anyways -- my friends always make fun of me, even jokingly giving me the nickname of the "Two Dollar Baller." Anyways, revenge was mine, as the cocktail waitress at MGM damn near flipped out when I gave her a $2 bill. After placing the bill in her hand, she proclaims "Oh my god! I love two dollar bills! THANK YOU!" and proceeds to give me a short shoulder massage. I have to admit I was loving life at that moment. Vindication for my $2 bills! Victory was mine! From that point on, I proceeded to get the quickest cocktail service I've ever received. Pretty much everything I ordered the waitress delivered. I thought the MGM Grand Poker room was beautiful, well managed, and had good dealers, but the tables seemed a little too cramped for my taste. Eventually, I made my way back to Motel 6, exhausted, but having a hard time sleeping. This always seems to happen to me on the first night in Vegas. I drink heavily, am exhausted, but still have a hard time sleeping. This usually has a chain effect on my body the rest of the trip, but just can't help being too excited to sleep! I only slept for about two hours before I taxied down to Treasure Island.

When I arrived at TI, I checked my bags, headed to the poker room, and managed to get a mixed $3/6 limit game going with 5 other players. We played Razz, 7 card stud, Omaha Hi/Lo, Crazy Pineapple, and Badugi. I was familiar with all of the games other than Badugi, which I was really afraid of playing. If you've never played before, it is a triple draw game where the best possible hand is A234 all different suits. Anyways, I ended up making a killing at Badugi ( probably just good luck ) and I stood up and yelled "I LOVE BADUGI!!!" which got a pretty weird look from everyone else in the poker room. After a couple of hours, a gentleman from North Carolina sat down at the table and had to have the worst poker face ever. After getting a hand, he'd go "AW SHOOT, THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD HAND!" or "AW MAN, THIS AINT NOTHIN!" and every time he was being totally honest. Eventually, we all started making fun of him (in good nature) calling him "poker face." This was a great time, but around 10AM, I was too tired to keep playing poker and I needed to head downtown, where I was to meet my uncle and his girlfriend. I stopped at Macy's in the fashion show mall and purchased a pair of Crocs sandals...I'd always wanted some, but never took the time to buy some.

I hopped on the Deuce at the Venetian and rode on the 2nd level down to Fremont. Our driver was hilarious, he left his microphone on the whole time and was just dogging other drivers, then he started on a rant how "you shouldn't even think about riding this bus in about 3 hours -- it would take you 5 hours to get from Mandalay to Fremont!" I felt like we were about to clip every single one of those little trashy motel signs on the strip in between Stratosphere and Fremont! I checked into my room at the Four Queens around noon and was really impressed with my room. I was in the tower furthest from Fremont. When I opened my room door, I felt pretty good about the bet I had going on with my uncle. Apparently he'd stayed at the 4Q a few years back and thought it was a dump. He was staying across the street at Binion's (for about 20 bucks more) and was sure his room would be nicer. We had a bet for bragging rights as to who would have the better room (I knew I'd win -- I'd already done research on the renovated rooms at the 4Q). Not only did I win the bet, but he was forced to hang out in my room because Binion's refused to let my uncle and his GF check in until 3 PM!

I played a little bit of craps at the 4Q and had some of the nicest dealers. The manager/pit boss guy was an Asian guy named James that was hilarious, courteous, and a joy to gamble with. He claimed that he'd made a televised final table at the WSOP a few years ago and was a regular winner at the $2/5 NLHE at the Venetian. The other dealers at the 4Q were actually the best I'd ever had in my numerous trips to Vegas. I was shocked when a man that appeared to be from Pakistan/India saw my Arkansas Razorbacks t-shirt and proceeded to go "RAZORBACKS! They're pretty tough!" and had a great chat with me about our football team. He also said to go online and put a bet down on Hillary/Bill Richardson as the winning Presidential/VP ticket in 2008 -- that I'd make a lot of money if I did. :) They were all great....I'd definitely stay and play at the 4Q on a future trip.

Later on Saturday evening, my uncle, his GF, and I went over to Binion's Restaurant down in the basement and I had the mediocre prime rib special. Not bad for the price, but nothing to go out of the way for. After hearing so much about those big ass frozen drinks at La Bayou, I went down there and got a Pina Colada/Banana mix, but refused the extra shot. I've heard too many stories with unhappy endings!! The drink was pretty good. Eventually I made my way down to Main Street Station and watched my uncle and GF play some video poker while I drank my big frozen drink. We parted ways from there and I ended up playing Let it Ride at Binion's. I had great luck at the game, I made about $80 bucks playing $5 chips. I bet you I tipped a good $30-40 playing that game while drinking a gallon of Corona. Later in my LIR session I found out why I was having such good luck: my dealer, an older Asian lady, said she lived in Arkansas four about 3 months back in the early 80s! A little home-cooking at Binion's. After playing Let It Ride, I went over to play some Blackjack and played for a good 3 hours, leaving down about $30. I probably tipped at least $30 to the dealer. When I left, she encouraged me to come back the next evening! As much as I would've liked to, we were moving to the Strip on Sunday...But I'll never forget the great fun I had drinking and playing mindless table games at Binion's! I stumbled back to my room at the 4Q and actually got about six hours of sleep, which is a lot for me in Vegas.

I woke up Sunday morning with a slight hangover, but nothing that wasn't solved with a trip to the Champagne Brunch Buffet at Main Street Station. Everyone was really impressed with the quality of the food and service at this buffet. We will all definitely return to this buffet again. My uncle and girlfriend left saying that they wanted to stay at MSS on their next trip!

At this point, I should make everyone aware of my #1 goal for this Vegas trip. I came up with the idea to replace my ugly kitchen table with a smaller pub-style table that would be refinished with a $1 chip from every casino on Fremont and Las Vegas Blvd. casino on the table top. Before leaving for the strip, I walked through every casino on Fremont and played for at least 1 roll of the dice at the craps table. I started with $20, and by the time I finished at Fitzgerald's, I had a $1 chip from every casino on Fremont, had tipped the dealers at every casino, I ended up with $1 more in cash than I started with! I work for tips when I'm not in school and felt like I was building up the gambling karma by tipping extremely well ( some might argue TOO well). At this point, i was thinking "god, I am such a lucky person, I got to collect all these chips and make money doing it!"

Well, at this point, it was time to say goodbye to Fremont Street, so my uncle, his GF, and I got in a taxi-cab and went to Paris, where we had 2 rooms comped for the night. I was able to get my picture taken in front of the Wall of Champions before leaving Binion's!

I requested a room as high up as possible when we checked in. I told the lady at the front desk "for a room so high up It would be impossible to make it out alive if a fire breaks out." She smiled and gave us a room on the 32nd floor with a strip view. From here, my uncle and girlfriend went out for some alone time gambling. I walked over to Bally's and decided to try my luck at Let it Ride again. I noticed the whole trip I was the only one not playing the $1 bonus bet. For my entire trip, I didn't see another NOT playing the $1 bonus bet -- but I stuck to my guns, proclaiming to the table "I don't play sucker bets!" They all looked at me like I was crazy. I was actually doing real well again, up about $60 dollars when I was dealt 339 in the hole. Of course, everyone knows this is a crappy starting hand in LIR, so I took my first $5 chip. Our dealer, a dry humored white haired gentleman named Irving, flipped over a 3 for his first community card. At this point I was stoked to make a profit on such a terrible hand, but proclaimed "Irving, you helped me turn trash into a good hand, but we can make it GREAT!" Well, guess what, the next card he flipped over was the 4th 3 in the deck! I stood up, clapped my hands, and said "YES!" Not wanting to look at my hole cards again, thinking that I might've misread my hand. Well, it was true, I had 4 3's, good for a payoff of 50 to 1, or a profit of $500. Irving reminded me that I should've been playing the bonus, as that would have given me an extra $400, but I was sticking to my guns....not playing the bonus bet. Anyways, I played a little longer, not taking the advise of the pit boss who told me "now is the perfect time to press your bets and make more money!" Eventually, I got the thrill of a lifetime when I colored up for a purple $500 chip (when I first won all that money I'd never even had a black chip!) as I stood up to leave the table. I dropped a $40 tip on Irving before leaving and proclaimed "You're the man, Irving!" on my way to the cashier. Irving was my favorite type of dealer, an old school Vegas guy that had been working at the casino since it was the MGM Grand. He had some great stories to tell.

From this point, I called a few people telling them about my big score and how much fun I'd been having. I walked southward on the strip to collect some more $1 chips. It was a mistake not taking a taxi down to MGM grand and then making the rounds. It felt like a million miles in between PH and MGM Grand. I was really impressed with what has been done at Planet Hollywood. The casino is beautiful, but I didn't really like the limits. Everything was $10 or higher on the table games, so I didn't play, but got a fresh new white chip from their cashier. After making my way around the south strip and back up to the Mirage, I almost lost my mind waking around Mirage about 5 times looking for their cashier! I walked past the cage at least 4 times before I finally was able to get a $1 chip. I made it all the way down to Casino Royale before heading back for our 7:15 dinner reservation at Ah, Sin! inside Paris. We sat and ate on the indoor Patio right off of the strip and watched the fountains at Bellagio as my uncle and I drank Sapporo and his girlfriend enjoyed some hot Saki. She gave me a little cup of her Saki to try out. I forced all of it down, but can honestly say that Saki is the most vile thing I've ever tasted. I wanted to throw up a few times, but didn't want to be rude. I could tell my uncle's GF loved Saki. For dinner, we all shared California Rolls, fried rice, and I had the Roast Duck. My uncle and his GF shared a sushi sampler for their entree. It was one of the best meals I've ever had. A combination of the Sapporo, fried rice (best I've tasted), and the roast duck (delicious!), and atmosphere created a meal I'll never forget. One of the true highlights of my trip. I am just glad I got to spend it with my family.

After our meal, I headed back to Bally's to play some more Let It Ride. I sat down at the table and started telling every new dealer that Irving was the best dealer at Bally's and it would do a lot for them to convince me otherwise. One of the pit bosses came over and chatted it up with the table, asking me why Irving was so great -- I explained about the 4 of a kind and the boss says "Irving gives the young whippersnapper a 4 of a Kind and all of the sudden he's the best n the world!" Giving me a hard time (all in good nature). Well, about an hour later, a young Asian lady comes to the table and deals me 22A, not a great hand, but better than 339. I take back my first bet. She flips over a 2. At this point, I'm not even hoping to get another two, I mean, what are the odds, right? The first time I was really nervous hoping for a 4th three, but it never even crossed my mind. Well, believe it or not, the dealer flipped over a fourth two! At this point, I stood up, yelled "YEAH BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" very loudly, and everyone came over and looked at my table. The pit boss, seemingly genuinely impressed, goes, man, TWO in one day -- that is crazy! Again, everyone at the table mocked me for not playing the bonus. I tell them I don't care -- I just want to gamble as long as I can on my limited budget, not win a jackpot. I am happy with winning another $500!! Well, I tip $25 bucks and get up from the table. I decide it is time to get on the monorail, head down to Sahara, and collect the rest of my chips.

At the shopping mall in between the Bally's casino and monorail stop, I drop into a little store selling Vegas memorabilia and buy a bunch of crap to put on the shelves in my dining room around the table I am going to refinish using the $1 chips. I am drinking a Corona and the cashier asks if the Corona is good, to which I respond "Damn Good!" And she remarks "I wish I had a Corona right now." After I cash out, she told me to have a good time and "Drink another Corona for me!" I headed down to Sahara on the Monorail. Unfortunately I got in a car with an EXTREMELY loud youth basketball team (these kids were all over Vegas, there must have been some sports tournament going on). Well, at Sahara, I decided to try my hand at $10 minimum Pai Gow poker. Again, I was the only one not playing the bonus. Well, wouldn't you know it, I get dealt a f'ing queen high straight flush that would have paid $250 dollars. I ended up pushing. To add insult to injury, I had to watch everyone else at the table win $20 on my freaking hand b/c they were playing the stupid bonus!!!! At this point, I was quickly bored with Pai Gow and decided there was no better time to play all of the random table games that I never play. I played Ultimate Texas Holdem (fun game, so much different than real poker) and managed to eke out a small profit, 3 Card Poker (worst casino game EVER), and maybe a couple of other things I'm forgetting. In the future, I'll mainly stick to the poker rooms, but it was fun to try something a little different for once.

At this point, I was exhausted, but did not want to give up on my mission to get a chip from every strip Casino, so I taxied over to Circus Circus (biggest dump on strip). Walked to Slots-a-Fun (is it bad that I thought "If there's ever another terrorist attack on American soil, I wouldn't be upset if it happened here."?) and got a chip. I have to admit, their chip is pretty unique. In a true rags-to-riches story, I walked from SoF to Wynn, where I didn't even think about gambling (huge table minimums) and walked right to the cashier. After a few minutes in line (dear christ, how many fake blondes with breast implants are walking around with Yellow chips in Wynn!?!?!?!), I look over to my right and notice an extremely tall African-American male that I recognize. I walk over to him and ask "What's your name?" At this point, he responds with "Chris" which prompts me to ask "Bosh?" Well, it was Mr. Bosh, NBA All Star and Team USA basketball member. I ask him for a picture, which he says is cool, and then I get this befuddled looking Arab man in front of us to take our picture. It's clear that the Arab man has no idea who Chris Bosh is and has this really confused look on his face. After he takes our picture, the floodgates open and tons of HOT white women start approaching Chris Bosh. As each young, attractive, and intoxicated woman come up to Bosh, the Arab man keeps getting more and more confused. I can only describe the look on his face as a mixture of confusion, anger, and WTF DON'T I KNOW THIS GUY!?!?! Well, it was nice to have a brush with fame. I have to admit, I really respect Chris a lot more after meeting him, because I only noticed green chips in his hand -- which means he's probably being responsible and trying to save up some of his money instead of blowing through all of it during his career.

After leaving Wynn, I realized the impossible had almost been done. I only needed one more chip: the Venetian! Woohoo! I decided to save a little money and walk over to Venetian. What a mistake. The area in between Wynn and Venetian, arguably the two nicest properties on the strip, has to be one of the scariest walks in the touristy part of Vegas. Well, eventually I make it to the cage and ask for a $1 chip. The Venetian is the only place where I had an option of chips, either the normal chip or a promotional one for Blue Man Group. I went with the normal one. At this point, I feel like I'm about to die, so I go out front, ask for a taxi back to Paris, and proclaim to the guy running the taxi line "I think I'm about to die...I've been to every casino on Fremont and the strip today!" The guy looked like he was genuinely shocked and said "YOU'RE CRAZY!"

I met my Uncle and his GF for a late night session of Video Poker at Gustav's bar before I went to sleep. I didn't play, but drank a Bud Light and watched my uncle's GF score a royal flush for several hundy, which was pretty neat. After an hour or so, I left them alone and went to my room for some well needed recovery time.

Monday morning we used their comps to get a free breakfast at the Paris Buffet. I have to say, the crepes were delicious, but I wonder if this Buffet isn't a little overrated. I think I might've enjoyed the MSS brunch buffet a little bit more! After the breakfast, we all said our goodbyes, hugged, and I walked over to Bally's to play a little more Let it Ride before I left. Well, I didn't have much luck this time, losing about $80 bucks in an hour, but still having a great time.

The plane ride home was uneventful, but I had a great time chatting it up with a newlywed couple from Branson, Missouri. It turns out the groom was a lawyer and even gave me his business card! He said to call him if I ever needed any help, which is really cool considering I'm in law school. The flight seemed to be over in a blink of an eye. As he handed me his business card as we got off of the plane, I thought to myself "I'll never have a better Vegas trip. I could win a million dollar slot machine jackpot and not have as much fun as I had on this trip." It was perfect in nearly every imaginable form. I won two big hands at Let it Ride, had two profitable poker sessions, had great food, visited with my family, and made some business contacts. It was perfect in nearly every way. The Vegas trip I had dreamed about for so long. Everything came together from the time our plane landed at McCarran to the time it landed back in Springfield, MO.

Despite having the best trip ever, I'm already planning my next trip to Vegas! What a great time! VIVA LAS VEGAS!

Oh yeah, here are some pictures of all my chips:

Can you figure out which casino I forgot to keep a chip from? (I played there, just forgot to keep a chip! What a moron! I'll have to order that chip online!)

Here are some "limited edition" chips that I managed to get my hands on while in Vegas (they won't be going in my table. matchbox twenty is my favorite band.):

    Great report. Thanks for posting.

Congrats on the two $500 wins at LIR. I need to try that game!

My brother did the strip crawl to collect $1 chips his first trip out and ended up with horrible blisters. Of course, he wore boots despite my warning.

I'm not counting the non-FSE casinos, even though I picked up a couple of them. Also, I don't really consider The STRAT to be a "Strip Casino" even though is located on LV Blvd. It'd almost be like trying to make South Point a Strip Casino. Maybe If I need more chips to fill out my table, I'll order a chip from Stratosphere. Here's a hint: the missing chip is from Fremont Street!

PS, Mikey, after reading your rants on Rapid Roullete, I made sure to play it at Tropicana -- and I made an effort to tip the dealer b/c of your hatred for the game! The guy dealing looked like he was serving a death sentence. Your blog is all I could think about when I was playing this game.

    Arebomb...

Great trip report. And I feel for the guy stuck on Rapid Roulette. I swear it was a four-hour jail sentence every weekend for me when we had it.

But as far as not playing the bonus bets--you're doing the right thing, they're pretty much all sucker bets, *especially* on Let It Ride. But I wouldn't even think of playing Pai Gow without the fortune bonus, if it's available. Of all the bonuses available, that one's probably the least rip-offy.

This was a really fun read from top to bottom. Your enthusiasm comes off well in your writing. I was excited for you and wanted to "whoo hoo!" just by reading your 4-oak's stories. Glad you had so much fun!

Great trip report. Wonder what was up with those cops on your trip to the airport, they sounded a little overzealous. I go to LV alone all the time, so what? The Imperial Palace chip wins the ugliest chip award BY FAR!
