The Plaza - surprisingly shabby but the room came with maxi pads!

I am a fan of downtown and generally we come to LV at least twice a year but sometimes more. We started out years ago at Fremont and then moved to MSS. This past year, we've been at The Cal due to MSS's closure. We almost always have at least four nights of comped rooms and freeplay, etc, at the Boyd properties.

For the past few years, we've been meeting up with about 25 friends and most of them don't gamble much and they tend to stay at the Plaza. At least one of them will get the one-bedroom suite and the gang of us will meet up there late night and hang out together. Last trip, I decided to throw some play at the Plaza and see what offers came in.

They sent me 3 nights plus a little bit of freeplay and some food comps. I booked it. Oddly, the Plaza doesn't have any online booking system for comps and you have to call. No problems booking it.

Our flight landed around 11am and we were at the Plaza by 11:45 on a Thursday. They had a room ready and let us check-in. We handed our bags over to the bell and he brought them up in short order.

We had room 2156 - it seems we almost always wind up with the last room on the hall. It was spacious but sparse. There was a desk but no outlets for it. The outlet by the chair and side table wasn't really usable because the front "face" of the outlet had come loose and the outlets seemed pushed back into the wall.

Only one washcloth included and when I went to dry my hands and put the handtowel on the bar in front of the sink, the bar fell off.

No conditioner - only shampoo, body wash, and lotion. No fancy tray for them either.

No coffeemaker in our room but a few other people in our group had them so I guess it was stolen by a previous guest along with the mini-fridge.

There was a space for a fridge under the television.



For some reason, the Plaza does not offer Kleenex (or the generic equivalent) for its guests but they do include maxi pads.



There weren't enough pillows for my taste so I called down to request some and they provided ashtrays but no matches so I asked for those, too. Kleenex are not available. I waited in the room for at least an hour but no one showed up so I left. When I returned later that evening, the pillows and matches had arrived.

Of course I forgot to bring my players card. I went to the players club but the desk was closed. I waited in line with a few others to get my card at the host's office. I played for a while but wasn't hitting anything good.

The rest of our crew was starting to trickle into town so I went up to the suite. I grabbed the ice bucket and noticed the sink at the mini-bar was clogged with standing water I mentioned it to my friend who'd booked the suite and he hadn't noticed it as he hadn't even looked at it. He called maintenance. They arrived within the hour and fixed it.

Our friends from Phoenix had arrived and they only had one working outlet in their whole room. They requested an extension cord and were told one would be brought up. Long story short, maintenance barged into the room while C was in only a tshirt and her underpants and then told her they didn't have any extension cords!

While it certainly wasn't terribly warm during our visit (high 80s), the AC didn't get very cold in any of our rooms. We kept the curtains closed in our room. I guess you only get the sheers if you have a suite??? Or perhaps those sticky-fingered previous guests took our window sheers, too.

When we checked in, the desk told us we had to schedule room service and be out of the room, too. We called on Friday afternoon around 3:30 and were informed that it was too late to get service for the day but we could schedule for Saturday. Fine. We asked for 3pm.

Surprise!! When we returned to our room at 5pm, the room had not been made up. We called again. It required a supervisor to get on the phone to okay them coming up to our room and cleaning.

We stayed at Plaza until Sunday morning. We had to checkout by 9:45 as we had brunch reservations on the strip (we did Wicked Spoon finally - it was okay but not amazing). I went down to the casino host's office at 9:40am while my husband took our bags to the bellhop.

The door was unlocked and I went in (it was locked and dark earlier when I came down at 8am). No one seemed to be in the office but a door within was open and I heard someone shuffling around. I called out hello. A head popped up and she said she was on the phone but would be with me in a moment.

No worries. I waited in the office area. Another woman arrives and came over to the desk. I pull out my players card and ask if she can look at my play as I was getting ready to check out. She says, "We don't open until 10am so you can come back then."

Sadly, no, I cannot be here at 10 but this is of no concern to her so I head to the checkout kiosks and pay the charges for my morning coffees and pizza.

I also got jacked out of being able to use my points for getting that cool Plaza jewelry box swag even though I could see it and get a TICKET for it from the players kiosk. I rarely ever use players point for logo'ed swag but I was really digging the jewelry box.

In the meantime, it turns the Plaza doesn't offer bell service on Sundays. WTF.

Fortunately our ride to brunch was with a local friend so we stashed our bags in her car.

Other than the issues with the surly host (why not just leave the door locked and post some hours on it if you're not open????) and the maintenance people barging in on my friend in her room, I liked the staff at Plaza. The gal who made our reservations, the one who confirmed my reservations and then helped me get a table for 15 at Oscar's for dinner, our waiter Scott at Oscar's (our gang has a tradition of having Sunday night dinner at Oscars), the front desk checkin staff, the security guys checking IDs (they said it was because you have to be 21 to be in the casino but I saw a ton of kids running around), all of them were great.

I was also pretty sure the website said no dogs at the hotel but then I saw a few of them in the elevators and on the casino floor so I guess it's a dog-friendly property if you were wondering.

Will we stay there again? I'm not sure, especially because for Sunday night we had a room at The Cal and it was far more lush than the Plaza - nicer beds, Kleenex, matches, better ply toilet paper, more towels and washcloths, working towel bars, etc. Plus their host is on site and ready to help starting at 7am every day and they always have bell service.

 

Looks like somebody left part of a box. LOL.

I would most definitely complain if kleenex (common noun) would not be in the room. That's one thing I expect, really. I've asked housekeeping for a new box if I sense that the box in the room is soon gonna run out.

 

I’m guessing you’ll take a pass on Plaza next trip...sounds less than appealing.

 

Unless they come up with something amazing as an offer, you're right. We come back for 4th of July (again with the big crew) and we already started discussing moving our "home base" to somewhere else. I'm thinking we might go to El Cortez - a few of our peeps live in LV and said they'd go scope it out. The Dog played baccarat there on Thursday and while the casino is small, he said it seemed decent. I haven't stepped foot in there since probably 2010 or so.

 

Stopped in to check out the casino last Sat, seemed pretty quiet. Was going to get a players card, but the new player deal was too much of a pia so didn't bother. (come back the next day at the same exact time or something?)

 

Yeah, it was something convoluted when I signed up years ago. The few times over the years I've played there, it often wasn't with a card because the players club was never open when I roll in late to play so I never played much.

 

My deluxe room there did not include a refrigerator . Some room types do include one.

That seems unusual. I have stayed at Plaza a few times and most everything was OK.

 

Other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

 

The play was all right; I scored a couple of the progressive 4OAKs but couldn't stay away from the regular slots and those weren't as kind. Particularly that stupid Wicked Wheel game killed me. I used to have great runs on it when it first arrived at Harrah's Reno (RIP)....

(I used to have a Lincoln a long time ago, but that's me behind the wheel of my Checker Marathon.... )

 

Thanks for the info, we love Vegas & appreciate comps, but a host hasn't ever provided us any extras, again Thanks.

 

We're not even close to high rollers but it seems I've always gotten a host to take off most of our room charges at the end of a stay at the Boyd properties and in Reno.... we don't charge a lot to the room though... usually a lunch or two and a few beverages from the gift shop.

If they send you offers, it's worth taking a few minutes before you check out to ask. We charge everything to the room during our stay but again, we don't charge a lot - maybe 50 or 60 bucks during an average stay.

 

I just wanted to mention how great this thread title is.

 

Nothing was a dealbreaker really but relative to the regular rack rate, I was disappointed. The significant differences between The Cal and the Plaza were immediately recognizable when we went over there.

I would say that the Plaza is not looking to cater to regular gamblers and their target market is more of the party crowd that is tired of the strip.

 

This thread made me laugh out loud, so thank you for that! I've only walked through the Plaza, but I've gambled and eaten at the Cal, and I like the vibe there. Hope your next trip goes well!

 

I'll be staying there on the 23rd of this month. If I get that room I don't think I'll be as good with it. My last trip there in December the room was really nice, got an upgrade to a 2 bed suite. Nice living room area separate from the bedroom and a great view of Stadium Swim across the street.

 

There was a host type that would peruse the board and make offers and say thanks for comments of the positive type. Also say PM me or shoot me an email-...... It will be most interesting if he weighs in or has been “busy” and can’t respond quite yet. Things happen. Someone just needs to step up and take a bit of responsibility with an explanation.

 

I was debating about moving my play from the Cal over to Plaza. The Plaza had overhauled their casino floor, moved in some good new slot machines and full pay vp. The atmosphere seemed nice and Bconnected had downgraded their comp dispersement over at the Cal. The big variable was that I like the rooms at the Cal and the rooms at the the Plaza were a big '???' Well, thanks for posting about the room. I now know that switching is not for me. Question solved.

 

If my room does not include maxi pads does that mean I have been slighted? I will go FULL ON Karen!
