Virgin Hotels to Open Without Resort Fees and Self-Parking Fees

Yeah...hard to maintain your level when the place is closed up and, the last time I was there, dodging the carts filled with the posters and historical items being moved out.
I think that Uber driver is right. At least with the Palms, you are in the Rio/Palms/GC triangle. At Virgin, you can walk to Terribles as long as it is daylight and even that is somewhat questionable. That area around the Hard Rock now resembles the area around The STRAT and that ain't good! Virgin is a less well-know brand than Hard Rock so we will see what will be the draw.
FYI...CET is charging for parking unless you have status.

 

I don't want to impugn all Uber drivers, and they provide a great service, but their knowledge of the industry is generally slim-to-none. I cannot tell you how many times I had a driver insist to me that The Drew was going to open within a year, and that Resorts World would never get completed.

To be fair, my understanding is that it didn't actually cover costs, but rather was a way to skirt the commissions from online booking sites. Same (to an extent) with baggage fees on airlines; while it did actually save some people money who traveled only with carry-ons, they've been carrying bags for decades anyway, but that extra money doesn't have a cut taken out by Priceline or whatever.

 

I am going to go over probably once to see a new resort. I love new resorts.

Staying there? Meh... Vegas-time is limited for me, coming from Europe, and I'm not sure I want to spend a lot of time not in the center of the action.
People complain about Mandalay Bay not being center of the action, but at least it's WAY closer than Virgin.

No resort fees? Also a big meh. I don't see why people hate them as much. I'd prefer a $19 room with a $50 resort fee to one that's $110 with no resort fee, if they're in the same range.
I always look at the bottom line, and price out everything included. Even the taxes not included in the price they show is 'strange' for me as a European. Here, rates include everything.
So, I really could not care less...

Let's not forget that Hard Rock had a pretty good run despite the location. It was open for just about 25 years, I believe (it came before Bellagio!), basically invented the pool club, had some very successful nightclubs, and hosted really great concerts. I never stayed there because I was always an MGM guy (I'd say Mlife, but I started going to Vegas before that existed), but every time I visited, it was packed. If, and this is of course a big "if", they manage it right, the place has a ton of potential.

 

I plan to check it out. I currently have status with Mohegan in CT, but may lose that before my Vegas trip since I haven't been since Sept and they run on a 6 month cycle. Video poker at Mohegan, CT is pretty decent. I mostly play DDB & TDB at the quarter level and could always find 9/6, although I had to pay attention because they have plenty of lower pay tables sprinkled about. They have a great slot floor in CT for anyone that's wondering about that. I don't play tables, so can't speak to that.

I am wondering if Virgin is marketing to the same crowd as Hard Rock was. I am old, and Cosmo is about as hip as I can handle

 

The main issues is the 3rd party booking sites will show their property as being more expensive, even if its not because of the resort fees. I think they are here to stay unless some major player removes them and doesn't just raise prices to compensate.

 

Lol, I hate loud music in casinos. I don't need my ear bleeding from the music along with my wallet. They should put soundproof old fogey zones in casinos!

 

I don't mind the loud music, it's the overlap that gets to me. If you're in the wrong pit at Aria (which, incidentally, is the south pit with the best odds), you'll get the live music from Lift, the DJ from Alibi, whatever they're blaring from Javier's, and the overhead music.

Even Cosmo is way too hip for me, ha.

 

I will find out if Cosmo is too hip for me later this year. I'm really looking at them for my second home in Vegas as I look at other places than CET. As for this place, I don't see any real draw to it. Hard Rock drew a certain crowd. Virgin doesn't seem to have anything that would draw a particular crowd and its off strip. I'm interested in Resorts World, but this place not so much.

 

I will definitely give them a chance.
From what I heard, Mohegan Sun is not a bad casino operator.
They are among the better ones in hundreds of tribal casinos.
Will see how tight their machines, and how generous their comps.

It's on Harmon Ave, a few blocks east of Planet Hollywood.

 

Even with resort fees, Vegas is still one of the cheapest places to vacation in the U.S. If you're even a remotely consistent gambler, it's not that hard to get comped rooms, and resort fees are a mere pittance on top of that.

I mean, obviously I'd rather not pay them, but I don't even really factor them in to my budget when planning for Vegas.

I'm curious as to why this only rates a 2.5. 99.54% JoB is pretty fantastic, especially for big Vegas resorts -- I believe 99.54% JoB correlates to 9/6, which is tough to find these days. 8/5 is way more common, even at $1. I don't mind a ton, because for me it's more about the social experience and having some fun, but 99.54% at JoB is about as good as it gets.

 

It is a true story that I started spending a lot of time in Vegas because of Excalibur, of all places. I stayed in a shitty Montreal hostel that was $8/pp/night, which for four of us, was about the same as Excal. It's more now with resort fees, but not by much, and there were also restaurants, bars, and a decent-enough pool, versus a cinderblock-walled former school with bunk beds. Even now with resort fees, it's still a better deal for a few friends heading into town.
