Echo Burning a Jack Reacher mystery by Lee Child. The first of his I am reading. I had read the Mr. Child was not happy about Tom Cruise playing the role. I see why Jack Reacher 6'4" 240 lbs and Tom Cruise..... So far it is starting out pretty good.

 

Ashes to Ashes by Tami Hoag. Thursday night I was reading by candle light as our power had been out since noon. The candle kept my hand warm!

 

No kidding, but that's Hollywood for you. Cruise's short sneering self-absorption is abominable.

I'm reading Anthony Horowitz's officially sanctioned Sherlock Holmes novel. I tend to be picky and skeptical about such ventures (as my handle suggests) but so far this one is as good as or better than Doyle as well as better suited to modern readers. Sorry if any Sherlockians are offended but there it is.

 

For any Beatles fans, strong recommendation for Kenneth Womack's John Lennon 1980: The Last Days in the Life.

 

I love the Reacher series. They really missed the ball casting Cruise.

 

What books are you into this year?

I'm into some nonfiction at the moment.
Two of the three selections are for the pet unit my class is working on.
I have no excuse for the third book!



My students this year are all comedians-in-training. They love Shel Silverstein poetry. So Where The Sidewalk Ends has been a popular read in my classroom.

Perhaps you're still plugging away at the same book you were working on back in my 2017 "Whatcha Reading?" thread.

Ken Follett's prequel to "Pillars of the Earth". " The Evening and the Morning". That has been a great series. I started reading him decades ago when he was writing WWII novels like "Eye of the Needle", but he has hit it out of the park with the series on medieval Britain.

 

Yep, one of my favorite historical-fiction authors right alongside Robert Harris.

I recently finished reading Will and Ariel Durant's 11 volume series - The Story of Civilization. It took me a good portion of the last year to read the 10,000 + pages, but it was well worth the time. It was quite dry in some places but I learned a helluva lot and it definitely helped fill up a vast portion of all of this past year's downtime.

 

Just finished Eat & Run by Scott Jurek who is a vegan ultra runner. He talks about his childhood, falling into running and stories about his biggest races. Was a good read but I wish that he talked a little more about food to be honest.

Currently reading the Bob Iger memoir Ride of a Lifetime.

@Basil, thanks so much for this suggestion a few months ago. I've now read the Dublin Trilogy and Bunny McGarry is an outstanding character! Actually, I listened to them and the Irish readers and accents were on point. Each book was better than the previous one.

 

Glad you enjoyed it! I just picked up the second one, actually. Just a few chapters in, but enjoyed the first one quite a bit.

I first read this in high school, at the suggestion of one of the best, most caring and most challenging teachers I ever had. I figured it was time to revisit 40+ years later with far different lenses.

 

It’s curious - The printed title on the cover has an “f” then and american flag shape, the k-e-d. The title on the printed pages has the traditional spelling, as does the library record lol. Prudish book store displays I guess!
