Agreed. I guess I should know this since I'm mainly a craps player - although far from a High Roller - I don't like playing anything higher than a $15 table, and the whole reason I went DT was to enjoy $5/$10 tables anytime I wanted...but do the HL craps tables see much action? The few I've seen are normally not even open.

In addition to what SuperCoop said, craps players tend to be highly superstitious. Most of us think the random gf who has never played and is just standing there watching her college BF bet $20 at a time is going to be the lucky shooter. You don't find those people in the HL room very often. So I'm thinking a lot of craps players will stick to the main floor for reasons such as that as well.

Because people perceiving them as a high roller is more important than the game.

Depends on what you mean. If you're asking about craps tables in high limit rooms, then the answer is no. Those are usually reserved games and even when its not a reserved table, most gamblers are in the high limit to play BJ or baccarat. Roulette is more likely to attract those HL players than craps. I have played at those tables a few times and there was never another player in sight.

But if you mean higher minimum tables on the main floor, those see plenty of action at the top tier resorts. Although some of us have mentioned in this thread the times we have seen a reserved table on the main floor, seeing a reserved side (i.e. half the table) is much more common on the main floor. And on busy weekends at the nicer resorts, its not unusual to see a lot of play at a $100 table in the evenings. For example, this past weekend at Wynn, there was one reserved table in the high limit (I saw the player, but didn't creep up close enough to see how much he was wagering), I saw one reserved side on Saturday night on the main floor, and $50 and up minimums across the board on Saturday evening. And all the tables were busy (though not in the mornings, even at lower minimums)

Sometimes, sure. But not always. I wrote in a TR a couple years ago about playing a mini bac table on the main floor at the Wynn when I got a bit out of control and was betting large. Large enough where I attracted a bit of a crowd. I absolutely did not want anyone thinking I was any sort of high roller (which I am not) and colored up soon after attracting the crowd

Yeah, I assume they get a kick out of the look on our faces when they have our annual salary on the table at one time.

From my experience, they usually bump to the minimum to $25 with one bigger player. $100 minimum if there are 2 or more. The other players are grandfathered to the original minimum.

That happened to me 2 years ago MGM, I was playing greens and one guy was playing blacks (a regular) and they up the limits to $100 to keep people away. I stayed in and we both had several great roles having a blast. I think I finally had to meet the wife for dinner and cashed out up over 3k

About 20 years ago I was playing $5 craps at Sunset Station on a not too busy table when a young, newlywed couple walked up and the bride had a $25 chip that someone gave her at her bridal shower and was told to put in on the 12. They had no idea what that meant. They asked a dealer for help and he put it on the 12 and the come out was a 12. The dealer jokingly asked, "Let it ride on 12 & C and E?" The girl (she was perhaps 22) stammered something like, "I guess." 12 hit again.

The groom was near me and I told him that he should take the money and run and received stink eye from the box. A dealer suggested leaving a couple chips on the 12 and most of the rest on any craps. They won. I again talked to the guy and was harshly told to mind my own business by a suit, BUT the older woman between me and the newlyweds told them they should really stop. The penny started to drop. They put about half of their chips in the rails, bet the rest on something and won again.

Finally, the older woman told them that they had enough for a nice downpayment on a house. The girl couldn't believe it. They said that they wanted to quit and the older woman and I got major looks and comments from the suits. I immediately left.

Yeah this has happened to me many times (including this trip) but to keep it at $15 all night (and open a second $15 table) at Cosmo on a late weekday is unheard of these days.

Same. And by analogy, I'm definitely a relatively-low-roller, but am also a regular and get a ton of attention from the pit, know the dealers, etc.

I just personally never care much about what other people are wagering. As Rusty Ryan put it (slightly paraphrasing, probably, because I haven't watched Ocean's Eleven in at least a week), how you bet is your business. Don't care if you split 10s. Just don't be a jerk at the table.

The biggest ‘whale’ I’ve witnessed wore a plaid shirt and leisure pants. Someone could easily have mistaken him for a janitor. He was easily playing over 60k a roll at the craps table a few years ago in MB.

Some ‘whales’ look for the attention....most don’t.

Thanks for sharing this story and nice that you got to play at the table they were winning at. Glad to also hear about the $15 tables at Cosmo. Not sure why they are lowering but good to know as i should be there within 2 wks. My sm stories to this thread are the following... was playing downtown at the D one trip night and i had a hot roll, someone was calling out a # and my roll would get it, i'm sure most here have had hot rolls on the board here. I think i had hit about 6#s and i had hit 8 4x in a row, its been some time since that roll but i remember it vaguely. Also, on one of my rolls on a past trip, someone at the table won 40k, now that was pretty amazing to see.

I agree 100%. I can't dispute the people above who think the whales are simply trying to get a reaction from smaller players, but I can affirm I have never seen that. Every true whale I have ever witnessed (which isn't a lot, but probably more than most players) was dressed down and was not flashy at all, other than maybe an expensive watch or jewelry. None of them were trying to impress anyone else. They were just gamblers (albeit at a different level). Probably the nicest dressed whale I ever saw was an older woman in the MGM Grand high limit a couple years ago (she bet between $40k and $100k per hand at baccarat) and she still wasn't dressed flashy. Just nicely for a person of her age. The largest bet I have ever seen made at a table I was playing at, the guy was unshaven, wearing a t-shirt, shorts and sandals.

If you really want to see someone trying to impress you with their largesse, go to a club (when they are open again) and watch people pay absurd bottle prices for the presentation and show that goes along with it. Those people want attention. People in the casino who want attention usually are not whales

I must miss the whales as I have never seen more than $1,000 or $2,000 in play at once amongst all my trips. I did see someone in Mirage HL get 200k or 400k handpay all in cash(forget which but it was Aces with a kicker). 3 suits around him when they brought out the cash. I thought that was awesome.

Hell I felt like the biggest whale in town playing 100 on the line at Golden Gate with quarters on the hardways and the boxwoman came out to shake my hand and thank me for everything LOL(the crew were getting good tokes as we were hitting hard 6s and 8s all session)

Same. Nightclubs (and the other kind of "night" clubs) are mostly about showing off. There are some exceptions, but most people betting big are not doing it for attention, and more often than not don't even want the attention. I, meanwhile, am far from a whale but mostly a black-chip player, and have never been seen on a casino floor without a blazer.

I also have not shaved in a week, but the mask mostly hides that. :p I do not own a single pair of non-gym shorts, though.

Twice I have worn a suit in a casino. The first time, at Aria, more than one person thought I was an employee, lol. The second time, in Tunica, I wore an eighties style white suit (my buddy wore a purple one). We did it to stand out (which we did) because we thought it would be funny (which it was)

I always wear at least a blazer, and a 3-piece suit to Picasso. I frequently get asked if I work there. I once was at a slot pull and was asked whose host I was.

I'm not really a craps player but I seen two funny things. About 20 years ago a group of us were at Paris for NYE and we decided to try craps. We were all pretty well toasted and only one person in the group really knew what we were doing. One of the girls in the group was given the dice and her first throw barely made it a third of the way down the table. The dealers made fun of her and asked to her to roll again. Well she fired the next roll down the table. One of the dice bounced up hit one of our friends at the other end of the table in the chest and the dice landed right in the drink he was holding. Everyone lost it.

I went to Vegas in the early 2000s with my wife who was attending a conference. So for two days I did a lot of wandering around. It was only my second trip so I wanted to check out the north end of the strip. I walked up to the Statosphere and on the way back, I passed by Slots of Fun. At that time, they had a craps and some BJ tables at the entrance. Basically, they were outside. As I was walking by, something hit my ankle. A player's throw had bounced onto the sidewalk, hit my ankle and then rolled on to the street.

I have a few friends that played in the NHL. They put it in perspective for me a few years ago.

It’s almost every guys dream to be idolized/adorned by the fans. Unfortunately, the bigger the star...the bigger the group. Within that group...there are always the ones that get carried away....literally and figuratively speaking. The problem is that you don’t know which ones will be the problem....it’s just better to avoid them all.

They all had stories. Most of the incidents go unreported...to avoid negative media attention. It was truly an eye opener....

The funny part of this story is that this conversation started because one of them was going to SB weekend in Vegas. I had no idea that SB in Vegas, was a thing....LOL.

Told this in another thread but it makes you pay attention. Walking through Caesars and there is one guy - :cool:European looking with the pinkie ring and cigarette dangling, open collar, and a drop dead gorgeous brunette :shy: on his arm.
We were staring a ways off and couldn’t see all the table but  observed....# called, followed by “winner sir, shall I place part of it elsewhere...”.
The guy would get the dice, she would unwrap herself and he would blow, take about 3 steps back and “dance” back to the table in a rumba style and toss, upon which she would take his arm as they observed the outcome. It was kinda funny.
BUT, there was A GUY who was watching  also except not the craps, but the woman. He finally summoned the courage and approached the table (this guy had the whole table to himself) tossing out a 100$ bill and glancing toward the woman as he did so.
Again, we were far enough back to only see a portion of the table (no gawking, please!!).:nono: But the pit boss looked at the bill and nodded as he threw it into the box, for change to be made for the newest player
The action had stopped (it hadn’t been fast and furious before) as the player made his bets mid-roll of an apparently hot shooter.
All was set and here went the dance, the throw and the resultant 7. o_O A double take by the newest player indicated a loss. He gave a quick glance to the smirking woman and the somewhat irritated shooter. :woot:
As we walked by while the dealers cleared all the chips we finally saw the 100$ minimum and hoards of black and purple and white chips on the table......the guy had picked a bad time to try and impress
