Flying to LAS or anywhere and the middle seats are open. That would make me think very hard before flying to LAS or antwhere.

can you give some reasons? It's better than the airlines who are not blocking out the middle seats like American and United. Just flew both of those last weekend back and forth to ORD, and the plane was packed both ways. That is not social distancing, especially when the passenger next to you has their mask down most of the time under the pretense of eating / drinking

And what of the person seated right behind? If concerned with dispersion ...

Why? You're farther apart from another passenger and, if you are travelling with someone, you both can spread out. Personally, if I was flying right now, I'd skip any airlines that DOESN'T block the middle seat from being used.

Alaska Air touts middle-seat blocking, but even that's not a guarantee.

I think @Bernie2 meant with the middle seat open to book, which definitely would be a reason for concern. My flights on AA were fairly full last week. In fact, I was pretty suspicious of the couple that were beside me on my last flight. They had the sniffles and a light cough. Could have just been Vegas taking it's toll, but they definitely weren't feeling well. Luckily, I was right behind the two seats they keep blocked off right beside the FA. Once we reached cruising altitude, I discretely explained my concern and he let me move up a row so I wasn't sitting right beside them.

Ae you saying they should go ahead and book the middle seat - which UA and AA are doing now.

I live down in the Southwestern part of the state, so I just drive down to Charlotte, NC. It's about a 3.5 hour drive, so faster than going to the regional airport and flying to CLT where everything connects anyway.

Southwest has the "middle" seat open through November now. Leaving for Vegas on Southwest Monday afternoon. Booked another Southwest trip to Vegas for October. I like it. Certainly better than 100% full flights. If at 100%, it would be more worrisome. Note, I'm not a spring chicken but according to my doctor, I'm healthy enough and have a positive outlook so I should be fine traveling to/from Vegas.

For a "visual" perspective, get a tape measure and measure it out 6ft (72in). Get a chair and measure from the middle of that chair to the middle of another chair, both to your side and in front of you. Even with the middle seat open (not even close to social distancing) and the person behind you is even closer!

Yep. No proven vaccine for 6 months? NO flights for me! I am going to try and bump my WJ flight a year for the time period, I like to visit LV (early November). I am hoping, desperately for February in Florida- but NO flights! Careful driving and stopping at family members, who are also doing things very carefully in TN.

I was on a southwest flight last week. Two children over the age of 10 flying with no adults. While they were very well behaved, their masks were off 90% of the time. The flight attendant saw this but never said a word.

I have no plans to fly in the immediate future, but if I do decide to fly to Vegas this fall, I would only book on Delta or Southwest, who are still blocking out the middle seats. It's not a perfect solution, certainly not six feet, but it's better than having someone else's face 12 inches away from mine, shoulder-to-shoulder. Big thumbs down to AA and United right now.

Has anyone seen a (reliable) analysis of transmission and seat location?

NatGeo had an article in March, but you have to put in an email addy to read the whole thing. First chart is chances of contact, second is chance of infection. I can't remember exactly what kind of methodology it was based on, it seems obvious. I have seen articles that described exact case studies, but I didn't bookmark the URLs. If you search "coronavirus transmisson airplane" you can find some.

I would like to understand why 9C in more likely then the people between them and infected person. Everyone else seems purely distance for likely contact.
