    Columbia records had a plant in Pitman, NJ that stamped out vinyl and at its height employed 2000 folks. It was very labor intensive, not much automation.

    Due to declining record sales, in the late 1980’s it was converted to manufacturing CD’s by Sony (no baloney). Very automated, a fraction of the employees needed. Then sometime around 2011, it closed due to declining sales and production was consolidated to another plant.

    Now vinyl is hot again, thankfully, I never tossed my stacks of wax, but my wife wants me to get rid of my old JBL speakers I bought in 1977. I told her I go with the speakers, she replied “if it were that easy, I would have put ‘me on the curb years ago”.

    Seriously, yeah, I've seen real records on sale again, well, before the pandemic, anyway. I still have quite a few 45s and albums, but I have not played them for years.
