If you hit a $1 million or more win in the casino would you tell anyone outside your family? I probably would not tell my friends and not permit my name in publicity announcements.

That's an easy one. I wouldn't even tell my wife. Wait a minute. Have any of you heard anything about my wife winning the lottery?

If I hit that much on a casino run, it would probably be public knowledge because that means I had one hell of a run on the craps tables! But otherwise, no, I would not specify winning such a large sum.

    Yes I would.
I would publish dozens of books on "How to win a million dollars" "How to beat the casinos" "Millions dollar slot secrets"
and teach gambling classes online and in person.

I agree I wouldn't want to be part of any publicity or promotions. But I would tell my family if they asked about it

Then after you have over tens of millions in book sales, you will have to write the follow-up to the blockbuster book and share even more “secrets”.

Aside of my wife and kids, I'll make every effort to remain as anonymous as possible. And will ask my wife and kids to do the same.

It's just that winning that much money will create "family" and "friends" you never knew you had before.

And there's no stopping the financial planners, insurance agents, and investment people that somehow will know of your new wealth and will be drawn to you like flies to shit.

I don't have the type of friends that would make me regret telling them, so I absolutely would. Family, well, that's a different story.

What would that be....$1M - 24% federal tax = $760K. No, no reason to discuss this with anyone other than the wife & in-laws.
And if we ever won a stoopit amount of lottery money, it's not a question of not telling anyone, it's a case of embracing anonymity...the next damn day.

I wouldn't tell anyone. Other than my bank where my money will be deposited, no one else needs to know. Of course, the IRS has their nose and paws into everything, so there's no getting around hiding it from them. LOL

I've found that the inclination to brag about financial windfalls is something most people wouldn't hesitate to do in theory or on a small scale, since it's good news and people tend to share good news with those in their circle. Just as many might brag about their kid getting on the dean's list in school, I suspect many might also brag about getting $1,000 for their stamp collection they'd forgotten about, or winning $500 on a scratch ticket. Your friends/family/peers will likely congratulate you, perhaps with a joke to the effect of "I guess you'll be picking up the next round of drinks, eh?". But that's usually about it.

For relatively small sums such as those above, it's usually not life-changing enough to cause problems for the recipient. That is, nobody is going to expect you to pay for their car repair, pick up the whole tab at dinner every single time you go out, or "help them out a bit" just because they happen to know you recently got an extra $500 or $1,000 to your name. Scale that up to six figures, seven figures, or more... and people's expectations tend to change.

So as much as I might want to share the good news with folks in my life... there are exactly four family members I'd share that information with if I hit $1mm+, but no one else other than accountants/tax preparers. I can say that there are a couple of people for whom I would pay off debts, and I would position it as "I came into some money, let me pay this off for you" without alluding to the full amount I came into. If the win caused me to do something that had a major material change in my life that I couldn't exactly hide (e.g., buying a vacation property), I'd tell people I won a much smaller amount. But nothing that would suggest I have quite a bit more laying around in the bank.

Actually it would be an optional strategy to consider by telling people you blew it all and gave it back even if you didn't. And if you did, oh well......:(

There are a few people I would probably tell whom I trust not to tell anyone and who don't need the money. But it's a moot question because I have never made a bet that would pay $1 million and never will.

A much more important question: would you post it on Vegas message board?

I bet you did. I met a lady at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi who won $2,245,xxx dollars on a progressive Wheel Of Fortune slot. Max bet (which she made) was $1.25. The reason I know is that I was walking by and she stopped me and asked why did didn't get a wheel spin. I pointed out that she had 3 progressive symbols in a row and we then looked at the call attendant line. I told her not to touch the machine and waited with her until a slot person showed up.

First off if my machine indicated I won a million I would wonder if it was a machine malfunction. I have read stories of people thinking they won big only to be crushed when they told them there was a glitch in the machine. Like in horse racing you haven't won anything until the race is official. After I made it safely home I would absolutely tell no one but my wife and kids. Even they would have their hands outstretched and no matter what I placed in the palm of their hands it would never be enough innit. Dad and hubby would be considered a cheap bastard no matter what. I think initially if you tell some family members they would be so happy for you at first but their happiness for you will turn to jealousy and resentment rather quick.
