My husband has this idea that he might want to experience the heat at Death Valley some summer. I might go as far as LV with him. He can find me at the pool when he gets done with his "experience". I thought he told me that DV was something like 125 at Furnce Creek over the weekend.

I did a TR a few years ago that included Dv during the height of summer. Furnace Creek was 122 degrees. I like heat and even I thought it was crazy hot

I remember at midnight it was still 109. :wink2:

I remember one day walking out of Bally's, and it felt like a giant hot blow dryer right in my face

Thanks for directing me to your TR. I'll give it a read. We were out to DV in April a few years ago and it was already flirting with 100 that day. That felt really hot considering when we left home the day before it was probably 45.

Looks like I have posted TRs with a couple trips to DV. But this was the really hot one: https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/index.php?threads/ukfanatic-aug-18-22-live-tr-from-aria-death-valley-and-the-sportsbook.123529/

I was once a heat-dog. I've played scores of rounds of golf in the teens, often double rounds, and we'd do summer getaways in the desert as much as we could. We're over that. Seven years along the central coast and age did that. And now we're back to dealing with a location that is consistently 100+ in the summer. But I do get the (weird) allure of experiencing the 20s.

you can get the "Death Valley Experience" in a sauna at a nice spa... only thing missing is the risk of your car breaking down and dying in the desert!

We did one July 4 weekend in LV including Death Valley. I remember standing waiting for a light change on LVB and feeling a burning sensation on the bottom of my foot. It was my sandals burning up and since i wasn't actually moving, they didn't get the "cooling" wind.

One mid summer trip was enough for me. I did find it funny seeing a few golfers come in late morning from their round looking exhausted while professing, it was a dry heat and nothing to worry about!

Exactly! He can go, I'll hang back and alert the search party when he doesn't return on time.;)

Seriously I think that Death Valley is one of the most fascinating and diverse parks I've been too. I hope to return next Spring to do the things we had planned to do this Spring, but didn't get to because of Covid 19. I just have no need to go there in the Summer.

Consider a Death Valley-to-Mammoth addition. Whether or not you are in Badwater itself or summiting Whitney, you'll still get the net effect of going from the lowest spot in North America to the highest in the Lower 48 in a short bit of distance.

it is beautiful there - I love deserts and am fortunate to live close enough to visit many of these places throughout the year. But make no mistake the heat can literally kill in the summer, it can do it very quickly too....

saw a documentary on the annual race they used to have from Death Valley to Whitney... needless to say those folks were hard core. I believe that race stopped a couple of years ago... oh, and yes, it was a running race!

Looks like the Badwater Ultra-Marathon is still current - this year was canceled due to COVID but it's been run every year since '87.

    Thanks for the suggestion

One of these years we need to make it back to California and revisit the parks we visited 25 years ago and see the ones we haven't. We need to retire and go on a road trip :biker:.

Badwater 135. Badwater to Whitney Portal (at +8,000'). Coming again in '21.

Not nearly the length but the supreme vertical climber hike/run is Palm Springs to the top of San Jacinto. No cheating with the tram. Nearly 11,000' in 21 miles.
