CES, one of the world's largest tech events, will be fully virtual next year amid continued concerns over the coronavirus pandemic. The Consumer Technology Association announced the change Tuesday after previously saying CES 2021 would continue to be an in-person event, with additional virtual and digital experiences.

"Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it's just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CTA, in a release Tuesday.

I have been watching the Sema and MJBizCon websites everyday to see when they will pull the plug as well.

If you want to go to Vegas the week after New Years it just got way more affordable than it’s been in years!

Makes sense, but I imagine it's going to be a huge blow.

It’s shocking SEMA is still planning a go at it in November.

This is a HUGE blow to the Vegas we all love. Conventions inject so much into this economy from so many directions. This is probably just the first of many announcements like this to come. Like the Phoenix, we will rise from the ashes of 2020, but it’s honing to be a road not many of us will enjoy riding on.

CES has been notorious as a place where worldwide viruses go to mingle, especially from Asia to the ROW. In fact, I fully expected to catch some new bug either at the show or the week after in the decades I've been attending. I can't see CES ever returning to it's former Mega tradeshow glory again, just too many people from too many places in such close contact.

Tomorrowland just did a huge virtual show over the weekend. Wonder if EDC will try to do the same.

Seriously, I don't know how this is going to happen. It seems like they are still trying to push through, but I'm expecting it to be a bit of a shit show.

Once Sema is virtual or cancelled, which will probably happen, do you all think prices will be cheaper around November 5th (my bday) lol. Cause it's always a pain going during that time.

I do. We're staying at the Mirage for 5 nights Thanksgiving weekend and with 2 nights comped it's only about $325 total with taxes and resort fees. That's unheard of.

I just saw someone posted on the Sema facebook page that they received a survey from Sema asking if they would like in person show, outdoor show or virtual show. Sounds like they are finally planning to make a change.
