Country music firebrand and fiddler Charlie Daniels, who had a hit with “Devil Went Down to Georgia,” has died at age 83.
A statement from his publicist said the Country Music Hall of Famer died Monday at a hospital in Hermitage, Tennessee, after doctors said he had a stroke.
Daniels, a singer, guitarist and fiddler, started out as a session musician, even playing on Bob Dylan’s “Nashville Skyline” sessions. Beginning in the early 1970s, his five-piece band toured endlessly, sometimes doing 250 shows a year.
The Charlie Daniels Band has long populated radio with memorable hits and his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Over the course of his career, Daniels received numerous accolades, including his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame and becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

He could definitely rip it taking a country song to the hither land with blues & rock licks without offending anyone.....it is a forgone conclusion as we age but always a sad farewell.

Charlie Daniels was a great musical artist and a great American. I have one CD story. Back before Katrina, I was at the Grand Casino Gulfport (currently the Island View) and my wife and I had a booth up front for the Charlie Daniels concert that night. He was great as always and we had a wonderful time. I competed in rodeos for 4-5 years and still had all my cowboy stuff so I was really cowboyed up for the concert. After the show, my wife and I were in the high limit section of the casino team playing some $5 slots. These four women came up and one exclaimed : "Oh Mr Daniels, we just loved your show tonight". BTW-I am about the same size as CD, have a beard and have been told a number of times that we look alike. Well, I didn't miss a beat and replied: "I am so glad you enjoyed it. What was your favorite song?" I don't even remember what song they liked but the next thing out of their mouths was "Will you sign our tickets from the concert?" . Well sure honey, what is your name was my reply. Being from MS, I have that Southern drawl about like Charlie did so that was not a give-away. Meantime, my wife's eyes are rolling around in her head like slot machine reels at my actions. After I signed each of their tickets with well wishes from Charlie Daniels, they went on about their business happy as hogs in slop. " I can't believe you just did that" was the first thing my wife said after the ladies were out of earshot. I replied "that was a win-win situation" because I had a great time talking to them and they are going to go home telling everyone what a great guy Charlie Daniels is for the friendly and welcoming way they were treated. :rolleyes2:
