They are flying direct from DC, however they are hopeful their 2nd trip assuming they like Vegas will be 5 or 6 nights during Christmas/NYE.

They are treating this as an appetizer trip.

First trip was 5 or 6 nights. Don't recall.
Too much to see and for a first timer in only 2 or 3 night.
4 is better, but this is contingent on if they are vegas fans and plan to drink n gamble.

Being in NY and having to connect on 90% of our flights or drive 2-3 hours for a direct....6 days/5 nights is perfect, with 7/6 also doable. More or less than that is not nearly as fun IMO. Part of the reason we only go once/yr. max.

My first trip was either 4 or 5 nights. We stay 6 nights now (occasionally 7 if we arrive late). I think 4 is a good number for a first timer trip. The burnout is too much otherwise.

My first trip was in 1975 and 2 of my buddies and I stayed 10 nights( went thru AAA and it was a package deal). It was too long especially back then when they weren't all the casinos and attractions there are now. I would say no less than 3 nights and no more than 5 for the first trip. We stay an averages now of 6 nights ..3 or 4 trips a year. Have fun no matter how many nights....just do your homework before you go..saves a lot of time.

I should say that our 6/5 or 7/6 timeline really forces us to take a day or day/night and go do something outside the strip/DT. It makes a trip to the parks so much easier and is one heck of a break from the "go-go-go" mentality.

It seems more likely than not that a first-time visitor will (significantly) underestimate the daily incidental expenses involved with staying at the Palazzo - a place not exactly conducive to penny-pinching, even (especially?) for non-gamblers - and also might tire of masking up. For these reasons, I would err on the side of a shorter trip, especially if they plan to return soon. That said, 3 days always felt like a sweet spot to me.

First trip was 5 nights at Luxor. My preference 7 days for the same reason @phade mention. I like to break it up with a relaxing day in the middle. Go hard the first 3 nights, relax for a night and go hard the last two. I also don't feel like I am wasting gambling and drinking hours doing other things on a 7 day trip.

That being said, as far as how long is too long truly depends on the person going. We also like long trips because of the travel to get there. If it was a 3-5 hours drive, I would think long weekends would be perfect (that's how we AC). So to the OP, the answer depends on what they want to do, how long it takes them to get there, their preference on gambling and drinking. I could probably stay for a few weeks, but would want to take it slower and do more off strip things and eat different meals and play a lot of lower level video poker.

For me, the ideal trip-length is 3 nights... but I try to make that 4 full days of gambling - arriving early (say, 9 or 10AM) Tuesday and leaving late Friday (between 5 & 7 PM)...

Two nights is absolutely too-little time for a first-timer. So, if the choice is 2 or 4 nights, go with 4.

Too long can be 2 days for some 2 weeks for others.
The biggest factor is your bankroll, will it last or can you MAKE it last?
I come from the east coast, so I used to plan 5 nights with the earliest outbound and the latest return to maximize my Vegas time.
My longest trip was 7 nights, problem was I still had a 5 night bankroll, NOT fun!
Nowadays I stay 6 nights, but with "normal" flight times, mid morning outbound and returns. No more redeyes, or crawling out of bed before the crack of dawn.
As for newbies, I think 4 nights would be a good starting point, however I would suggest a more centralized location for them. It would give them an advantage in moving around and determining what Vegas has to offer and if it is really for them.

My longest trip was just over two weeks, for business but extended over a weekend.

No, it was not too long, but there were some annoyances like having to pack 2+ weeks of everything and having to office mainly out of a hotel room.

With many things closed and everyone uptight about the virus, I am thinking that even a few days would be too long now.

I think it's great that all our VMB'ers are sharing what works for them and also includes how far they live, the length of their driving or flight to get there, and other things.

Because everyone is different. It is important to include these things so the newbie can make decisions to maximize their trip experience.

Generally speaking it would be better to have a longer trip if the travel to get there is long, but I've heard and spoke with people who don't mind 2 night trips even though the flight there was close to 6 hours. It all depends on your interests and how you do trips. Some people ( like me) like to just put it in cruise control and have a laid back trip. Other people like to go balls to the walls and cram as much activities in 2 nights because they like it that way.

Bankroll, personalities, and interests are the factors that make a trip memorable, so sharing of what makes everyone's trip enjoyable is valuable.

I’ve done one trip that was 9 days/8 nights followed by 5 days/4 nights.

    I preferred the longer trip.

Frequency now plays a part in my decision making.

I'd say 3-4 nights given the not normal Vegas situation today. If LV virgin friends asked I'd probably recommend waiting until LV is more normal.
If they plan to rent a car and want to see Hoover or other off strip places I'd say 4-5 nights.
If they are gamblers and are hoping for possible future comps then their daily play budget might be factored in.

My first trip was two nights and it was too short. Just a taste to get me hooked. ;)

Given travel flight time and check in, 4 nights is probably good for 3 full days of exploring.

My first trips were all four nights. I thought it was about perfect as a newbie. Depending on flight times sometimes you lose much of your to & home travel days which limits the amount of free time actually to do what you chose.

I’d say 4 nights if they are gamblers (they do the locals thing somewhere close to home) and/or if some shows or nightclubs are open (doubt it). While the trip is long from DC, IMO you can only do so much sightseeing in 100+ degree weather. I guess you could go shopping.

My first trip was a drive in from LA - Friday to Sunday. I just turned 21 and had a tiny gambling budget. I was down & out on Sunday. My aunt, who brought me, gave me a roll of nickels & I hit a $400 jackpot. Up until that point, two days was a long a** trip.

I like 3 days now. I pace my gambling better & try to sleep 4-5 hours per night.

4 nights so they have time to take it all in. Also I don't think anyone else has mentioned this but DO NOT let them go over actual NYE for their 2nd trip. Around it, ok but DO NOT let them stay over the actual holiday. I have been to Vegas over 200 times, only twice has my stay involved Dec 31, first time I thought it would be fun and learned my mistake. 2nd time was against my wishes because my mom requested it for her 70th birthday and we decided to stay in the room and watch fireworks during NYE to avoid the crowds and STILL had problems. There are just too many people to be able to enjoy yourself in Vegas on NYE. Imagine being in Disneyworld on a Saturday during Spring Break and then there is a fire drill and you have hoards of people pushing their way in every direction and being told you can't stand in one place by the police. That's what Vegas in like on Dec 31st. The year we planned to avoid the strip on Dec 31 we took our rental car to The Orleans to go bowling and see a movie. Upon our return to Flamingo around 2pm to hunker down for the rest of the day I arrived at Valet and was told they were only accepting 7 Stars, I was diamond AND a hotel guest and they turned me away. Parking garage was full as well. I had to leave my 70 year old mom at valet and go park at Cromwell. Crazy. Never again.

Tell them to learn video poker and stay at least 4 nights. Appetizer trip or not. If they are not interested in vp, then sure, 2 nights on the slots should be enough.
