From my experience in the industry and observations as a patron, I think part of this is server politics as well. Since a solo diner will usually run up a lower tab than a party of two, it will usually result in a lower tip from that table. Many restaurants also incentivize their servers based on how much they sell each shift (I.e., whoever sells the most on Saturday night gets to look after the VIP table the following weekend)... so if a solo diner will spend less, it hurts that server’s chances.

Of course, absolutely none of this is the customer’s problem. But it’s a pretty consistent theme that I’ve seen both as a solo diner and as a restaurant worker, unfortunately.

    Well done on the gambling!
Guess I will cross Andiamo's off my dining list.....I am usually solo and do not like eating at the bar. Sad.

You get two dealt 9s in ONE session?!?! What are the two dealt quads I'm missing in 6+ years? Aces and 9s! If you got dealt Aces twice in a session, I'd REALLY be pissed at my luck!

Sounds like pretty good results sans Royal!

I can tell that Andiamo strongly prefers to not seat solo diners at tables because they do not take reservations for fewer than two people through OpenTable. You either reserved for two people through OpenTable (which I did the one time I did a reservation there; I was seated all the way in the back) or you had to directly call the restaurant to reserve for one person. I am looking to dine there as part of a stay and play at the D in late August, and you have at least confirmed that they will seat people at the bar for dining. Solo dining is one of those things where involving a concierge or casino host (if your play is big enough for the particular property) can help the guest have an experience more equitable to that which the "preferred" guests (for restaurants, that would be couples, pairs of couples, and groups of six or more -- since the splurge factor is way higher for them) have the privilege of taking for granted.

You crushed the promo. I guess you played dollar JOB at the 4Q and BP at Binions.

Curious how many hours it took you? Guy I know who doesn’t play much VP said he did it in 7 hours each, 14 hours in one day but that seems optimistic.

I grew up in the restaurant business, so I do understand to a degree. Although at our - admittedly much lower end place - making the customer happy was way more important. My mom (who ran front of house) would have thrown a fit if a host spoke to a guest like that. Plus you have to think of long term $ - I was solo today, but several times over the past 12 months I’ve brought a larger party in and spent $$$$. Which they should be able to see in my OpenTable history. I also find it weird that it’s specifically always a problem with them when I’m dining solo. I’ve come in with a group of three several times and we’ve always been seated at a four top (so also a cover going unused) and that is never an issue.

At the end of the day - I was satisfied. I actually prefer eating at the bar so there isn’t really anything to grumble about other than my affronted ego. But the consistent customer service issue I’ve faced with the hosts’ attitude is the one thing that would make me hesitate to recommend it to others, especially solo diners.

That would theoretically be possibly if you can maintain a 900 hand per hour pace. Speed alone is doable - but I find it hard to believe that many people could play accurately at that pace over that prolonged period of time. Maybe Bob Dancer could have done it in his younger days - but I certainly can’t. I didn’t track time on machine - but I guesstimate that it took me about eight hours of playing time for each promo. Plus I took frequent breaks to keep the blood flowing and my mind fresh.

Edited to fix my horrendously wrong guesstimate of hands per hour. Math is hard, yo.

Ok you pretty much did it in the same amount of time at 8 hours as he didn’t take breaks. Roughly 900 hands an hour.

Here is my experience as a (generally) solo diner at Andiamo.

I grumbled one time to them about Opentable not allowing me to book as a solo. The only thing they asked me to do was book for 6 PM or earlier if I am going to be solo.

Doing that, I have always gotten a table. Yes, it is either one of the back tables, or the side tables by the wine cabinet. It works well for me. As a T2D, I prefer to eat earlier most nights.

I do apologize for not thinking to say anything to you, but it never entered my mind that they would force you to the bar.

I have known several people without reservations that are able to walk up and get a bar seat. YMMV

I also wonder if Saturday night solo may have been part of the issue?

You jammed a LOT into a short trip! Hope you tell us about a last minute royal before flight time.

I was eight hours not including break time. So I was at about 800 hands per hour. To do it in 7 hours would be ~915 hands per hour. I can play that fast in shorter bursts but not for hours on end. But there are plenty of people who are better and/or faster VP players than me. Also remember that players clubs close at midnight. So if you want to add the FP to account same day make sure you are done in time.

ETA: The actual numbers based on math instead of the wild guesses this post originally contained.

If it is coffee ice cream there aren’t as many regrets to be made.

eliza also was likely playing at a much faster rate with her earbuds in place.

She probably slowed when they were out, and she was subjected to the near-constant babbling of theoldcoach and alexlifeson.

Wandering around downtown cashing in random tickets. Turned my $100 FP at Golden Gate into $90 on their crappy bartop VP. And got a breakfast appropriate drink. Confirmed (again) drink tickets at the bar. Bartender says first drink free upon cashing in. Then should spit out a ticket for each 16 points earned (that seems like a weird number, but that’s what she said) or 20 minutes played. Bartenders have discretion beyond that - she pointed out that a regular currently at the bar plays a lot of money, but moves around a lot. Because he moves he doesn’t generate drink tickets so they are still comping him using their discretion. She also noted that the system hasn’t been working right. Some machines are spitting out way more tickets than they should and others aren’t spitting them out at all. Also noted that it’s currently a 30 day pilot to see if it works.

Saw this sign at Cal. I wish they had upgraded their BConnected program instead.

In happier news, free grilled cheese Wednesday’s at the Plaza has survived the closing of Brightside - now available at coffee bar.

There’s really no reason to come home from Vegas with quarters.
