The Golden Nugget had one Pai Gow table opened yesterday and the minimum was $10. The dealer set everyone’s hands based on house way. This is the first time I’ve ever seen $10 Pai Gow at the nugget. This table is always $15. I didn’t enjoy it without picking up the cards and setting my own hand.

I assume they will change it from the house way if the player asks them to? The house way is not always the best way for the player to play their hand...

That doesn't sound fun at all. Half the fun of PGP is picking up the cards and seeing what you've got.

I have the same question - can you tell the dealer you want your hand set other than the house way?

Is this even legal, as written in the game definitions submitted to the state gambling oversight board?

As those are written, the player always has the option to ask the house to set it how the dealer would set it (house way), but the player has never been obligated to do so. Certain jurisdictions do that when you play two hands - the second hand must be set house way to preclude the knowledge of one hand's cards in setting the next hand... But I've never seen it enforced on a person playing a single hand.

IF, the new norm is for the casino to set the player's hand "the house way", then, for the regular PGP game, it's not a deal breaker ....but, in Face Up PGP, it would be a deal breaker- i.e., on those occasions where the dealer reveals a "monster" hand, the player can set his hand to play for a push, often times deviating from "the house way" of playing...

^^ hahaha. This reminds me of a funny story from my last trip.

I was playing face up PGP in 4Q in March (right before COVID hit) and I watched a woman push a hand she should have won because she set her hand 'house way' - it was a 2 pair situation with a Queen as her highest single card vs the dealer with a pair of A with 10-9 on top. She went pair/pair and 2 pair/Qx would have won.

It caught me off guard and I thought she just didn't see it, so I (imo gently) asked, "hey, why didn't you play the 2 pair back? You would have won." And she tore me a new one, telling me to mind my own business and to let her play her cards. She goobered like 8 out of 10 hands, causing her to lose out pretty quickly. I couldn't help snickering every time she messed one up.

You can't just help some people, but maybe forcing the house to play for her would help her.

Yes, they set it house way but you can always ask them to change it to however you want to play it.

Any updates on this? For me, one of the reasons Pai Gow is enjoyable because you get to handle the cards.

I'm sure the house wouldn't like it, but are the dealers allowed to help you with your hand at the cards up Pai Gow? I expect they'd get more in tips if they did - "if you play your two pair on the bottom you're going to win this hand instead of just pushing it"

Generally, the dealers cannot tell you how to set your hand....the dealers are for the most part limited to telling you how the house would set the hand...
I'm curious whether the casino will still allow a player to play a position/seat that isn't directly in front of the player...provided that position/seat isn't being played...if you have played enough PGP, I'm sure you've noticed that some seats are just "losers", even though the cards are randomly dealt...

I didn't want to be a lookie-loo but it I'm pretty sure the players were handling their own cards at Encore Boston Harbor last night. Minimums were $25.

So far the only casino I’ve seen where the players can’t touch the cards is Venetian.

I stopped and watched a few hands the other day as I was passing through.

It looked MISERABLE. Dealer flips his cards, sets them. Then goes one by one through each players’ cards. He would go “oh, you won!” or “it’s a loser” right away before even setting them so I doubt he was really focusing much on house way.

I’m staying at the Wynn. You can touch them here. And they let four people play at each PGP table. Which is interesting, all the other casinos only allow three.
