Hasn’t there been bad blood between the owners & players for awhile? That Bryce Harper, Mannie Machado thing last year was weird. Looked like collusion, but what do I know.

After the Astros sign stealing fiasco, both sides needed to come back strong.

Quite frankly, I'm having a hard time drumming up much sympathy for either side.

Yeah, the owners have been playing Moneyball with the players in the same way the managers do. It sniffs like collusion to me, too, but if it could be proven, the MLBPA would be all over it.

But I think the strike/lockout after the CBA expires after the 2021 season is going to be a doozy.

Does anyone know what happens to the MLB CBA if there isn’t a season? I thought Woj said the owners could ditch the NBA CBA if they don’t finish the season.

Honestly, both sides are making money. Definitely not as much if things were normal. I'd kill to play 70 games and get paid 100k for it! But these guys are making way more than that.

Its not the players, its the owners. Both sides agreed in March that the players would get a pro-rated salary based on the number of games, but there was no language about playing without fans. The owners whiffed on that, and they are trying to get concessions on an agreement signed just three months ago. Franchise values increase an average of $60 million a year, and they are putting the squeeze on the players. The owners have made three proposals, and all three have the effect of paying the players 33% of contract value... it just reads different because of the number of games to be played plus an flexible post-season.

That is a long winded explanation of saying that the owners are crying poor and making the SAME OFFER THREE TIMES because they made a shitty deal in March.

You'd kill to play 70 games and get paid $100K for it because you are a talentless hack (like me). These people who have trained their entire lives for this and risk career-ending injuries constantly have earned the contract that they have signed (both individually and within the CBA). My guess is that although the MLBPA is pretty tough, they'd be reasonable about discussing further givebacks on playing in empty stadiums. But the hard line taken by the owners is not in good faith.

And I understand that we're talking about multi-millionaires fighting with billionaires, but where does that money come from? Most teams draw 2 million fans at $30 per ticket. We buy the merchandise. We watch the games on regional sports networks that drive rights fees. We buy the beer. We wear the gear. We watch the postgame shows. We buy enough product that the sponsors see value in paying for the advertising. WE ARE THE ONES THAT ARE PAYING FOR IT BECAUSE WE LOVE THIS SHIT.

I don't want to watch a talentless hack play 70 games for $100K. I want to watch Mike Trout, Christian Yelich, Stephen Strasburg and Marcus Semien. We give them the money. We can't tell them after the fact to give it up because now we think they have too much. Doesn't work like that.

One of the parts of the March agreement is that the owners can impose a season as short as 50 games this year. The MLBPA's statement tonight effectively says "Fuck it, just tell us how many games and when to report".

Baseball better realize that life goes on. With or without baseball. People are getting used to not having baseball. We are getting close to a point where people simply will not care if baseball returns.

Regardless of how this is resolved, the fans can't boycott since they're playing in empty stadiums. So the only measure of fan interest will be TV ratings, which will be skewed because of nearly four months of not very many live events being shown on TV.

I think for some it is a health issue AND a labor issue. Covid could intervene at any time. A lot of people are furloughed and many of them probably would not come back at 75% to help out the bosses financially.

You hit the nail on the head. On one side you have the owners, mostly comprised of billionaires. On the other side you have a lot of millionaires. Those that aren't make a hell of a lot more than the average Joe, and neither side cares that much about about baseball or us. I enjoy watching and find it relaxing, but like a lot of things recently, I find I can live without it. Let them take a year off and check in next year.

This is a very thorough review of where the negotiations are currently. It gets a little wonky with the legalese, but if anyone is interested in the actual issues, its a great read.

If your mind is made up and you aren't open to find out the actual issue, then don't bother. "Its just millionaire vs billionaires who don't care about us" is just the same as "Resort fees need to end because they don't care about us". There is nuance, and there is room to understand both sides if one is so inclined.

I agree that neither side deserves sympathy but the lack of transparency from the owners on their finances is quite disingenuous. Further, players have a limited shelf life so I understand the MLBPA's stance.

MLB should be very concerned about the NBA having games this and probably next summer. Definitely will cut into ratings and attendance (if/when fans can return).

A 50 game season with expanded playoffs will be nuts! I assume sportsbooks will offer win totals bets for the truncated season - if so I'll be making a few wagers on these. :D

They should try again in 2021. A 50 game MLB season sounds as good as a 5 game NFL season.

At 50 games, most teams will have a shot... sounds alright to me... just get me to the NFL season and all will be right.
