    My Trip Report

Hi, everyone. Probably no amazing writing happening in this report. I'll just be giving some updates and posting some pictures.

First things first: There was just an earthquake here. I am typing this from my room on the 12th floor of The D. There was a whole lotta shaking going on, but fortunately nothing that would have caused too much damage. I'm assuming it is an aftershock from the original 6.5 earthquake that hit Tonopah just the other day, but I haven't verified that.

I drove down from Salt Lake City this morning. I left at 9am and got to The D parking garage at 2:15pm. I took the parking garage elevator to the casino floor where I was met by a nice security guard who asked me to put my wrist against what looked like a metal detector, but it actually took my temperature. 97.5. Then he asked me to remove my mask for the camera. 10 seconds later I was on my way to the hotel check-in desk. The D added a nice touch by offering complimentary champagne or water to those waiting to check in. I opted for the champagne. There were about 10 people in line, but it didn't take more than 10 minutes to get checked in.

After I checked in I moseyed around the Fremont Street Experience. Previous posters have noted/pictured turnstiles and extra security on the FSE. While I couldn't get a straight answer from the three FSE security guards I asked, it became clear that the extra security pieces are geared toward protecting FSE from potential riots and are not something that will be on FSE permanently.

After checking out FSE, I went down to Atomic Liquors for a couple of cocktails. They are offering bar seating now for solo drinkers like me. Their bar stools were physically distanced at the bar, approximately 8 feet apart from each other. I was the first patron today, as I got there right when they opened. All the bar staff was wearing masks. For patrons, masks were optional. I had two delicious cocktails while there. First was My Currant Flame and next was In The Forest. Both featured mezcal. $11 each. OK, I had two of the Forests. They were good.

After Atomic I came back up to my room to write up this short update and do a photo dump.

A couple of other things I noticed in terms of what's open and what's not:
Banger Brewing was not open, and there is no sign indicating when they will be open. The same can be said for Park on Fremont.
Therapy and Evel Pie are open.
Pizza Rock was open for takeout only.

That's all I have for now. My next post will include a photo dump.

This is the view from my room at The D.

Eliza has pointed out this great feature of The D bathrooms before, a cutout so you don't have to get wet in order to turn on the shower or adjust the water temperature.

It's true. If you see this sign, follow the arrow and you'll find the entrance.

I don't know if it's still the case, but at one time this was believed to be the largest operational fire hydrant. It's kitty-corner from Atomic Liquors.

Ok, that's all the pictures for now. It may be tomorrow before I post again. Thanks for tagging along.

Some things that I find aren't given frequently enough are explicit praise and encouragement. This is EXCELLENT reporting, Jimbo :) Loving both the style of narrative, the photography, and the details you're picking up on... and all without gambling a cent yet.

I have to be up early tomorrow, so I won't be online late enough to see your updates once gaming officially opens at midnight, but that's the first thing I'll be checking for in the morning.

Just on a hunch... I'm going to put in an unsolicited suggestion to make your first bet a single play on a $5 credit ($25 bet) video poker machine. The superstitious part of my brain is thinking that these machines are itching to pay out... so you might as well be first in line to take advantage of it.

    @notfromconcentrate you are too kind!

I am working from my hotel room during the day on Thursday and Friday this week, beginning with a 7am (Vegas time) meeting Thursday morning, so I am not sure how much midnight gambling will be happening tonight. But, a good friend has already called me weak for even considering not gambling at midnight tonight, so I guess I will have to figure out a way to make an appearance. I'll scope out a $5 VP machine, record the hand, and post it here

    Loving your photos, @jimboguy!
You, and all of the other "re-opening day" posters, are really filling a niche right now for those of us longing to be there (and wondering exactly how everything has changed and/or stayed the same). Thank you for taking the time to do this report.

    Carry on, and good luck!

It makes me wonder, if Gaming Control were here, would they issue a violation? No way this is complying with their order.
