I'm certain that is true, and you'll notice that live game dealers continue to exist in large numbers despite the technology for electronic table games being available for decades now. If they could reduce costs without overly harming revenue by switching to electronic table games, they would have done so years ago.

I know COVID "changes the game" but at the end of the day they are going to be begging for customers for the next 6 to 12 months and I don't see taking away some of their core popular offerings as being a good strategy for coping with that customer shortage. I know that I won't be back to Vegas until it looks like 2019 or something close to it.

I don't disagree one bit with how you are walking through it logically though.

In the notes for many of the casino openings on June 4, it has some fine print that makes it sound like all/most casinos will no longer have table games open 24/7. If so, I expect they won't be opening them until the day shift comes in at 11am at most places. Which would suck since i like to start playing Pai Gow at 6AM...

It was a convenience but not a money maker unless that ONE guy appeared. So. Common sense or acquiescence to 19 ( you can’t even THROW a 19). !!

You think about my game of choice, which is live poker--holdem, Omaha, etc.

You sit there shoulder to shoulder with 10 people, sometimes literally millimeters apart if that much--depending on how many buffets the guy sitting next to you has ingested.

Each player touches their chips which you then deposit into the middle of the table forming a communal pot. One player then drags all of those communal chips into their personal space, touching all of them as they stack them.

It's the same situation with the cards, all communal, everyone touching all the cards everyone else has touched.

If you wanted to develop an effective way to spread infectious germs, these procedures would be a good start.

I've seen where some poker rooms in Europe have put up the clear plastic glass between the players, in an attempt to ensure players don't physically touch one another.

But that still doesn't address the risk of the germs on the chips and the cards. I suppose you could wear gloves, which might look pretty bizarre.

One way of eliminating the infectious risk of the chips and the cards, is too make the game completely electronic. Of course, that puts all those who make their living as a live poker dealer on the unemployment line, right? And some of these poker dealers are amazingly talented in their craft. Completely destroying their careers is a disastrous solution.

I have actually played in completely electronic poker rooms in the past. I remember trying it just out of curiosity more than anything else. In truth, I didn't really like the electronic experience--maybe because I'm an old fuddy--I don't know.

But ultimately electronic poker amounted to a fad, that relatively speaking disappeared in quick fashion. You still see electronic table poker mainly on cruise ships. And the reason for that is, they struggle to find consistently competent dealers capable of dealing the game.

I'm nearing 60 yrs old, and suffice to say, I still enjoy life a lot. And I don't want to take unnecessary risks. And this Covid-19 thing is not a pleasant way to go, if you've got the worst of it.

Again, the solution is a vaccine. And I'm wondering if poker can ever again be the same until a vaccine is not only developed, but effectively given to EVERYONE!

    I see your point.

But personally I don't how many times since this nightmare began, where I just unconsciously FORGET NOT TO TOUCH MY FACE.

It's a hard thing to do, as for example to spend in my case your first 60 yrs rubbing or scratching your nose, eyes, cheeks, etc. Only then to instantaneously and completely stop doing these things. I find it very difficult to do, although I have improved dramatically over the last 3 months. Now instead of doing these things 300 times per day, maybe if I'm lucky if I only do it 30. You really would as you say have to be a complete germaphobe, to be fully conscious of this behavior at all times.

And I doubt I'm alone in making those mistakes. And I'm guessing that's precisely why this thing is now a world wide pandemic.

Night shift from 2:30am-4:00am is probably where tons of money is made. If your like me and your playing at 3am with no sense of time... it’s the booze playing. That’s where those mistakes and wild bets are made.

I like playing late at night once it dies down and the tables are slower and lower cost with just the drunkies at them... some of the best conversations I would never remember.

    "I'll raise."
    "What?"
    "I said I'll raise."

I don't disagree with you one bit. The bright side is that we don't have to be perfect, we just have to be better. In the grand scheme, it's about a statistical reduction in transmission not a statistical elimination of transmission.

There sure are a lot of reasons the casino's would do this. They wouldn't have to pay dealers, pit bosses, etc. People aren't touching cards or chips which could reduce cheating. And I don't know for sure but I'd guess they could increase the house percentage.

Does this mean that having the lady next to you blow on the dice for good luck is a thing of the past?

This GWAE podcast w GM of South Point was pretty interesting,
    https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/gambling-with-an-edge/podcast-guest-ryan-growney-gen-mgr-s-point-casinos/
points of note to me (from the interview, not my opinion) were:
going to reopen short poker tables.
No plexi- table dividers - said would just be another thing to sanitize.
Not big on gloves- false sense of security that may lead to cross contamination.
Going to sell masks near cost ($2), didn't want everyone grabbing them free / possibly not wearing them, heavy employee demand, had 400k.
smoking stays, try to ban it in vegas=fail.

Overall pretty good plan until they ask about chips.
A: don't touch your face until you sanitize.

Wouldn't be surprised to see more stadium type configurations for most of the games.
From what I have heard, stadium setups are for a variety of games including roulette, blackjack, 3 card,....

I think the answer is obviously “sure they can”. Will they? Doubt it.

The stadium seating setup has even made it onto Cruise ships now, though not well attended on mine in November. I have seen lines to use them at Foxwoods.

They actually had an interview with Interblock (which makes a lot of the electronic games) on local news the other day, where they were saying they didn't even have demo units because the demand was so high.

Personally, I do think there'll be a lot more electronic games. Between the appeal to younger players who are hesitant to sit at live tables, the decreased staff costs, and the ability to offer worse odds to people who won't know the difference (Bellagio had an electronic triple zero roulette game), it's to their advantage. Add the social distancing requirements, and it's a no-brainer. Personally, I hate it, but I completely get why it's very much in their interest.

I sure hope not.... the socialization that takes place when gambling is why it's fun. Nobody expects to get rich, It's the entertainment and a party atmosphere that people enjoy and come to Vegas for.
