In case you haven't seen it, this one sort of "put them on the charts", a few years ago.

Not a huge Chris Stapleton fan, but I think he has the perfect voice/style for Tennessee Whiskey.

And I think Kenny f’ing crushes Please Come To Boston.

Have all you people forgotten Santana's "Black Magic Woman"?? Written by Peter Green, an original member of Fleetwood Mac.
But, this is my favorite cover (at least available on YouTube) of ANY song EVER.

I don't know if anyone has said it but most blues songs have been covered by more than one artist and done multiple times. Waaaaay to many to list! Alot of interesting stuff on this thread!

Springsteen's cover of Lourde's "Royals" was unexpectedly good.

10,000 maniacs cover of the Boss and Patty Smith song. I remember seeing this live on MTV the night it aired. Always had a little thing for Natalie Merchant

"Louie, Louie" was covered by practically every local band way back when. Nobody knew the lyrics, and nobody would have ever heard of the song without the Kingsmen. But a couple people already mentioned that one.

I was thinking about saying "Proud Mary" as covered by Tina Turner but I like the original better. "Poncho and Lefty" by Townes Van Zandt and Willie Nelson qualifies. Going way back, Dylan's anthem "Blowin' in the Wind" was improved musically by the harmonizing of PPM. A number of his songs were done well by other groups like the Byrds. Dylan may be America's greatest lyricist but his playing is ordinary and he is not exactly gifted vocally. Two of his lyrics became the signature songs of other famous artists. That has to be the gold standard for a cover.

Thought of another very good song with a better cover that became the artist's signature song. "Respect" by Otis Redding, covered by the incomparable Aretha Franklin. Otis even admitted, with respect, that Aretha took that song away from him.

I find the Emmylou version (First 'cover' of this song?, from 1977!) to be THE perfect cover of Pancho & Lefty:

"There are only two kinds of men in the world: those that are in love with Emmylou and those that haven't met her yet." - Willie Nelson.

If Emmylou did it before Willie, a fact of which I was not aware, then her cover gets credit. The arrangement is a big part of the song's success. Van Zandt's original is simply picked, and his voice wanders all around the note. It took something to see the potential in it.

One of my favorite cover songs is Loan Me A Dime. An old delta blues type song originally by Fenton Robinson covered by Boz Scaggs with guest Duane Allman.

Love that version as well. It's on several of my playlists including one of my Las Vegas ones.

There are very few Beatles songs where I think the cover comes close to matching the original. However, IMO, Elton John's chart-topping rendition of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" actually surpasses the original.

( I was also going to post RHCP's "Higher Ground", but Parallax beat me to it.)

"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," Elton John.

"With a Little Help from My Friends" by Joe Cocker is good, but I agree that Beatles covers are many while good ones are few.

When in doubt, Loan Me A Dime. It's on all my lists. My playlists help keep my sanity in this sh*t, along with Busch, & a nice buzz.
