    My Trip Report

Greetings VMB! Yours truly, Earl here. I’ve decided to travel back a decade to post a trip report of my very first trip to Vegas. What a trip it was.....and what a rookie I was.

This TR will be posted a little bit at a time with a decent amount of ridiculous pictures. It was just me and one other buddy, Wendal. I know a few of you have met him at some point.

I’m so excited to post the insanity that was my single life while in Vegas! Get ya popcorn ready y’all.

    Love,
    Earl

    Trips to Las Vegas:

So one of my college buddies from Clemson (Go Tigers) took a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada in the summer of 2009 after finishing his master's degree. He took this trip with a few of our mutual friends, and when he returned....he called me up. "*****....we are going to Vegas together next summer." I bleeped out my name because I did not have a Vegas name yet. I had never been!

The names were developed around March of 2010 before taking my first trip. There is a BYOB strip club in Seneca, SC. It is as absolute trash of a place as you could think up in the NW corner of South Carolina. It was part of a bachelor party for a friend of ours, and it was by far the most fun I've ever had in a strip club. My Vegas buddy and I both made up names on a whim when strippers asked our names. He chose Wendal....I chose Earl.

So Wendal and Earl have a plan in place to go to Las Vegas together in June of 2010....after both of our first year of teaching high school. I saved up as much as I could all year in anticipation of this trip. A first-year teacher in South Carolina....I think I only pulled in $29,000 before taxes that year. I distinctly remember planning the trip. I had NO idea how to plan a trip like this. I had only flown once in my life at this point, and that was booked by my dad to take a trip with him. I SURELY didn't know how to find good deals about Vegas. Hell, the only thing I knew about Vegas is from what I saw watching The Hangover the summer before in theaters. I knew I had a good chance of getting laid, as Wendal had gotten laid the previous year after working pretty hard at it. He had no wing-man with him out there. Knowing we would be out there together, I knew we would be fine....as we are both EXCELLENT wing-men for each other.

The other thing I knew is that everything was open 24/7, and drinks are free while gambling. "Just play the penny slots and play one penny each time. You'll get free drinks." Holy shit! So with ZERO knowledge of Vegas or where to stay...and Wendal having VERY limited knowledge, as he stayed for a few days in 2009 with those friends, but they were in a time-share a few blocks behind Planet Hollywood. So I remember debating where to stay with Wendal. We knew we wanted to be very budgeted in the hotel, but also wanted a really cool pool atmosphere. Flamingo is what we landed on. Center-strip, supposedly great pool with a supposed topless pool, and fairly cheap compared to the rest.

I booked us the trip together on Priceline for $616 each. Don't ask how I remember that. I just distinctly remember always comparing my trip price each year from that first trip. We would be flying DELTA from Charlotte-Atlanta-Las Vegas. 7 Nights at Flamingo. Every day in June was the slowest day every in anticipation of this trip. Finally June 29th came, and I drove from the Spartanburg area to Rock Hill, SC to spend the night at Wendal's apartment. We had a 10:00am flight in the morning to catch.

I remember watching The Hangover the night before flying out to Las Vegas. Wendal had it on DVD, so we watched it at his apartment in Rock Hill (20 minutes from Charlotte) that night. It gave such a sense of excitement I could barely sleep. Somehow I slept a little bit on the apartment floor. We were up and out the door around 7am for our 10am flight from Charlotte to Atlanta for a short layover.

What were we planning to do on this trip???

Drink a whole shit ton and make some good memories and stories was priority one. Priority two was to use Wendal’s super cool digital camera to try to rival the photo album from the end of The Hangover. Priority three was get some booty.

And finally priority four was to gamble. You must understand....while I knew the rules of blackjack, I had no concept of basic strategy. I assume there was such, being a math teacher and all. But I wouldn’t have even been able to tell you to hit on 16 but stand on 17 against a 10. Didn’t even know about splitting I don’t think.

I SURE as hell didn’t know what Craps was. But we did always have poker nights in college. I figured I would just play some poker. Maybe buy in with $20 and see how it went. (Yeah right!!)

Well while we waited to board our flight, a nice looking older woman spoke to us because Wendal had on a Clemson hat. She said her nephew or something went there. This woman was one of the flight attendants for our flight to Atlanta.

We board the Delta flight and find our seats. We are the last row where there is only two seats on the row. Well the flight from Charlotte to Atlanta is like an hour long, so the flight attendants don’t do much. Let’s call her “Mary.” Mary sat back with us and chatted us up for a bit after our encounter at the airport. She is obviously flirting with Wendal. We are both 25 years old and she is likely double our age. She calls Wendal a younger sexier Tom Hanks and winks.

I look at my ole boy Wendal....”this is going to be a good trip buddy.”

Since she knows we are heading to Vegas, she slips us a couple of drink vouchers for our next flight. Although Wendal didn’t join the mike high club that day....Mary might have by herself when she disappeared for several minutes.

Well it’s around 11am now so we find something to eat for lunch real quick before the REAL flight. We choose Popeyes. At that time there were maybe one or two Popeyes locations anywhere in SC. I had maybe had it once.

I get my food, but Wendal’s is taking a little longer. Finally a worker calls his name....”yeah umm....my manager said you can’t git yo food until I get yo numba....”

While Wendal was flattered, this was not quite the girl we would be searching for in Vegas. Wendal got his food and when he walked away that worker looked down at his lower half....”mmmmm MMMMM”

So now we are on the ACTUAL airplane that would take us to Vegas!!!! No flight attendants would hit on us pre-flight, but a nice looking older woman came to take our orders for our beers. After having a couple, she walked by and I asked “Do y’all have any of that complimentary Jack Daniels back there?” She laughed and said “No I’m sorry. Would you like anything else?” I laughed and said “No thanks. It doesn’t hurt to try does it?” She winks at me. Wendal and I kind of look at each other. We give that look like (boy we are about to be on our game).

About 20 minutes later the flight attendant taps me on my shoulder. She places a white bag on my lap. Then passes one over to Wendal. “I found some for ya.” In this bag was 4 mini bottles of Jack. A can of Coke. A big container of peanuts. Heaven in a damn bag at this point.

We proceed to down it all in time for landing. There is still NOTHING like that feeling of seeing Las Vegas from the first time from that airplane. All of those casinos in the distance ready to be taken down.....

With a decent little buzz starting, we deplane and make our way to baggage claim. Not that we checked bags. We both only brought a carry on for a week-Long Trip.

    Day 1 To be continued.....

Summertime in South Carolina is pretty miserable. Usually the hi is only in the upper 80’s or lower 90’s, but the humidity is brutal.

I made one step outside of McCarron Airport towards the taxi line....holy messy dogshit! HOT! The hi in Las Vegas my first day was 106 degrees. We get into a cab and say....FLAMINGO SIR! Well I don’t know any better so of COURSE the bastard takes the tunnel and highway. That taxi driver must have been a distant relative of Al Unser. He was racing EVERYBODY. I remember thinking to myself after all the anticipation, I won’t actually make it to the damn hotel.

We do arrive safely at Flamingo. Around 4pm The check-in line is pretty damn long (some things will never change). Wendal says to me....watch my bags in line...I’ll be right back. About 20 minutes later he shows back up. “Figured we would need this.”

There I stand with my first beer in Las Vegas. Wendal had remembered a little convenience store from his trip the year before. I now know this to be one of my favorite spots in town, Stage Door. So we drank a few beers while we waited to check in. We even shared a couple with John and Cheryl, a couple that were married in Vegas and come back for their anniversary every year. Glad to be making friends already.

    Wendal (left) and Earl (right)

We get checked in and immediately start changing into swimwear to head to the pool.

“Let’s take the beer to the topless pool.” Wendal said. Of course I loved the idea.

“Won’t the beer be warm in like 15 F’ing minutes though? How are we gonna keep them cold,” I questioned. Wendal had the solution, but two unfortunate events took place.....it was not in fact a topless pool....AND YOU CAN’T TAKE BEER IN?!?!? This is going to be a more expensive trip than I planned. Our plan all week was to buy beer and bring it down to the pool. Now we have to buy $6 beers?!?!?

Let’s just hang out with the security guy since we came all this way with our beers in the cooler....

We finish the rest of the Coors and decide to go try gambling. Not sure it was a good idea as we are starting to be pretty drunk and it’s only 8:00.

We walked next door to O’Shea’s. My first gambling experience was about to take place. And we landed on...Craps? What the hell is this shit and how do you play?

Wendal gave me outstanding advice. “Just put $5 there.” (Pass line) guy rolls a 7. We win. “See?”

Shit this is easy! I’m the next shooter. I don’t know what was going on but I made myself $40 Rolling for a solid half hour. Wendal told me people don’t normally roll for that long. Well that’s the worst thing that could have happened as I have been hooked on fun Craps tables ever since. We played for a bit longer and probably lost the winnings back while getting a few free Jack Daniels.

The last thing I remember of that night was wandering in front of NYNY around 2am. Total blackout after that. Day 1 in Las Vegas was a huge success in my book.

    Day 2:

It must have been 3am (felt like 6am for us) when Wendal and I passed out in the room on the 19th floor of the Northwest corner of Flamingo. I remember thinking....my god what a view to wake up to. Can’t wait to get down there!

But before I could get out of bed, I wake up to the rustling sound of Wendal getting dressed as he walks by my bed towards the door.

    “Where you goin man?”

“I’m going for a walk.” And then I hear the sound of destruction for Wendal that day.....

    Kssshhhhh!!!!

About a half hour later at 8:30am, he shows back up. I wake up a second time....for good this time.

    “Dude are you already drinking?”

“Goddam right I am. We’re in Vegas, Earl.”

Well that was all the motivation I needed. I got out of bed and showered like I must do every morning before I can function. We discussed the plan of attack for the day. We needed alcohol. And food. My god we needed food. I don’t recall eating anything that day once we got to Vegas.

The plan was to obtain alcohol. Pregame in the room for an hour. Eat. Get ready for pool. Go looking for some ladies at the pool. And let the day take us on a ride.

Step 1: walk to Stage Door and get booze.

Wendal showed me how to get to Stage Door from Flamingo. No it’s not head south on LV Blvd and then head east down Flamingo road between Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall and Bally’s. We headed out the back Door through the Flamingo habitat. Towards the pool entrance....under the monorail....down a back alley.....

“Wendal where the fuck are we going?”

So we go in. Buy a case of Coors Original (The Banquet Beer), and I suggest we get some liquor. Seeing as how I realize we are going to have to buy beer at the pool, I decide to find the cheapest whiskey they sell. Then I said something that changed the rest of my life.

“I’ll take a bottle of that Early Times.”

One of the big things that really drew me to love Vegas was the lack of an open container law. Back in college at Clemson, it was incredible how strict police would be with this. Sometimes I would see people sneak a drink out of a bar at closing time. There was no tolerance, and guys what get tickets immediately.

My own personal encounter was with Central police. Central is a few miles from Clemson where lots of students live. It’s also where DeAndre Hopkins, among other Clemson greats grew up. Around 6pm one late afternoon in the summer, I walked outside my apartment with a beer in hand yelling for my buddy to come inside because some sporting event or movie was coming on. I can’t recall. I stepped one foot into the parking lot and a man stepped out of one of those 80’s Chevy Blazers.

“Sir I need to see your ID.” I assumed he wanted to make sure I was 21, which I was. He takes it and comes back with a ticket for open container. Unreal. Cop camped out in a student apartment parking lot waiting for things like that.

Walking down the strip with a beer was such a feeling of freedom. That first night in Vegas, walking around with a couple of cans of Coors Light....hell yes.

So I purchase Early Times and Coors with Wendal. We head back to the room, but this time headed up Flamingo and cut through Bill’s.

“Earl, we are gonna spend some time in here man.” 99 cent margaritas at the center bar, and karaoke within view of the tables. Wendal remembered this from the year before. We cracked open a few beers and put them on ice to keep cold with our trusty cooler.

Sometime around noon we wandered down to the buffet at Flamingo. I recall long lines, but nothing crazy. Here is a picture of our first REAL meal of the trip.

After lunch, we took our one getting prepared for the pool. More Coors and we dipped into the Early Times. Good lord it was awful. Every taste was a chore. But I knew only bringing $500 for a week in Vegas had to last. I wanted to get as buzzed as possible to limit my need for beer purchase at the pool. Living large back then! Around 2:00 we stumbled our way into the pool. Another day over 100 degrees. I remember beers being $6 each, but if you buy a “party bucket” (5 beers for $30) they gave you a free Leinenkugel’s. I think we each bought one. Who knows at this point.

That first day at the pool we spent 4 hours there until it closed. Boy did we make some friends. We even ran into someone we already knew.....

The first picture from Wendal’s digital camera from being in the pool that day was ya with this guy. One of my favorite pictures!

The next pictures are of Wendal and me with that person I mentioned that we already knew......

    “Hey! Earl and Wendal!!!”

It was Cheryl from the checkin line we gave beers to! When we asked where her husband John was, she said he’s inside playing blackjack. Actually....she didn’t say that. She slurred the shit out of it. Cheryl was shmammered. Let’s just say I don’t know if John would approve of her behavior....

    Haha. Yeah, cool! Crazy pictu.....ummmm...

“Oooook, thank you for taking our picture sir! Here I’ll take that.”

“Taaakkke one weiith meeee and Wendallllll”

    “Sure thing! Smile buddy!”

    “Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!”

Ooooook that’s enough Cheryl. Wendal ain’t about to get shot out here.

We finally escape the wrath of hammered Cheryl. I think we made friends with about 15-20 people at the pool that day. We made our way around the pool scoping out the womenfolk. See, there seems to be a lot of girls that some would call “hot as shit” but it’s not really my type, and I’m not their type. The typical Cali girl or Jersey girl looking for a jacked tan guy with short spiked hair and tats. I don’t have anything against that, it’s just not my style. So we looked around for some down to earth ladies that were in pairs or a big group.

Who knows how many girls we talked to at the pool that day, as we are very friendly, and as I said....Wendal and are are excellent wingmen for each other. Also it was insane how much it excites girls when we told them we were teachers. Weird.

We eventually came across a group of 6 girls from Pittsburgh. Jenna, Sarah, Kelci, Maureen, Jamiee, and Tori. Oooooh Tori.

We hung out with these girls for a little while. It was kind of hard to figure out which one we wanted to really hone in on. They were all damn good looking and a ton of fun. Now Tori.....was big. And I mean BIG....upstairs. So big that I knew that it wasn’t even worth the effort because it would take someone better looking than me....Wendal felt the same way. I ended up talking to Sarah the most. She had a nice little rump on her. We got their numbers and it turns out they were just a couple of floors above us in a suite on the top floor.

***side note....being a math teacher, I’m good with numbers. The best thing I ever did was ask a girl for her number and not write it down. Just remember it. And let me tell you.....it’s a piece of cake for me to remember a line of 10 digits. Even two or three different girls. But as drunk as I was at this point? No easy task. But I knew that was a move that had never failed me in the past. I got 2 or 3 girls numbers that day and remembered them long enough to get back to my phone and log them in.

We got responses from the Pittsburgh crew, so after the pool closed, we changed clothes and prepared to go hang out with the gals. First things first....go get more beer from Stage Door! We realized we had been in Vegas barely 24 hours and had already gone through an 18 pack of both Coors and Coors Light, some Early Times, and beers at the pool. Teachers Gone Wild bitches.

Here is a picture of us with some of the girls in their suite. I’ll let you guess which one Tori is.

That’s also me wearing a University of Pittsburgh shirt! I happened to bring it with me. Earned that shirt in High School on a 7 on 7 tournament at the Steelers/Panthers practice facility. Our little old school from SC won the tournament and we got a frigging t-shirt for it.

Also notice how much nicer they are dressed than Wendal and me. They were heading out to a club or two. This is DEFINITELY not our scene. So we told them to have fun, and holler at us afterwards if they want to hang out. It was likely that this was going nowhere today. But they were in town a few more days. Plenty of time to seal the deal!

Another side note: my phone will only handle so much, especially when I have pictures in my post, so posts with pictures will be shorter.

So we bought some Bud Light from where else...Stage Door....and headed up to their suite. After some shots of god knows what and beers, they headed to da club and we headed back to the room. Maybe stumbled to the room is more appropriate, as there is this photo of Wendal.

We knew we needed to keep the rest of the beer cold, but we had more than would fit in our “cooler.” So we used an old college trick we used in Atlanta when going to watch Clemson. We did this in a hotel with about 50 beers....looks a lot dumber in this picture.

We decided to gamble a bit and headed to O’Shea’s for some NL Texas Holdem. Both Wendal and I were solid poker players even back then. But I had never played poker with more than a $10 buyin at a home game.

The minimum buyin at O’Shea’s was either $50 or $100. If anybody ever played poker there before it closed....it was special. Seriously! The poker tables were up against the strip. You could feel the heat of the night air and the air conditioning at the same time. Here I am playing in a seat where I could turn my head and spit on the sidewalk. So cool.

Doesn’t look like a lot of chips in front of me. I’m sure I did fine. I was definitely playing around midnight because of the time stamp on the photo above. The next picture is of Wendal at 2am with this guy. No idea who it is. But they are both shitfaced.

I suppose we passed out soon after that. We still hadn’t gambled a whole lot yet. I’m not sure we heard from the Pittsburgh girls that night or not. But we aren’t done talking about them. Day 3 results in our room only having 1 person sleep there that night. Next post: July 2, 2010.

    Day 3:

Day 3 begins again on the 19th floor for both of us. The hangovers begin to settle in for a while, but this is no ordinary trip. Hangovers must be fought through. Sleeping until around 9am, Wendal and I are downstairs at the buffet by 11am. It’s at this point that he informs me about Bill’s graveyard special. $4 steak and eggs from midnight to 8:00am. Well good lord ‘man we need to take advantage! A solid meal at the buffet does us some good. We decide it’s not quite pool time. Let’s instead head over to Bill’s to see what’s going on.

We grab a 99 cent margarita and hit the $5 Craps table. $5 tables is all I can afford this trip. Except this time, I intend to learn the game, as I’m sober. We play a little bit, and learn the names of the crew. We stuck to Pass Line with a $6 6 and 8 bet. I don’t think we made any other bets all week. Although I believe early on I was a sucker for the Field bet.

After an hour of Craps lessons, we go back to Flamingo. On the way in, we eye the poker tables. We will be back at the tables soon. Poker is calling us!

By about 1:30pm we make our way into the pool. This time with not much of pregaming. This means our insanely small bankroll will take a hit. The first thing we notice is the Pittsburgh girls back in their corner of the pool. We both figure we should find some new targets.

It doesn’t take long before we meet some Virginia Tech students (or recent graduates, not sure). There were 3 of them. Beth wasn’t very good looking, but her two friends were. Courtney was fairly attractive, but Kate....hell yes! So we both tried to figure out if they were interested.

Here is a shot of Beth and me coming back from the bar. Although Beth was far from what most would consider a “babe,” she was SO cool. We had a lot of fun hanging with these 3. Mainly because of Beth. The other two were goddam doorknobs of personality. Not rude or anything, just boring as hell.

Well it turns out that the Pittsburgh girls see us talking to the VT girls. Jaimee, Sarah, and Maureen come say hey to us. Wendal and I ask how the club was and they said it was fun, but they were just so smashed coming home, they passed out when they got back and didn’t holler at us. Good for them right? Haha!

So they go back to their crew in the corner of the pool from yesterday. Wendal and I decide to get the VT girls numbers to hang out later. I go with asking Beth for hers. A theory I stuck with it College was to show interest in the girl that probably doesn’t get as much interest from guys. It does two things. It gets the group to be interested in hanging out....and it gets the ones that usually get attention wondering why they aren’t getting the attention. (Yes I know we were ******bags. That’s ok. Makes for a good story in Vegas right?)

So after getting Beth’s number, (in my head of course) we met several more people at the pool. I felt like we knew half the damn pool at some point. But we made our way over to Pittsburgh gang to say hey. They may have been to the club the night before, but they were goin HARD!

This made us go hard too.....I mean drink a lot! So we get a $22 liquor drink in a souvenir cup. It was pretty potent but not worth $22. We get a couple party buckets and begin to really feel it.

We eventually hang out with Pittsburgh girls for at least a few hours.

So in the time hanging with the Pittsburgh crew, there are 6 of them. At some point we have to make a choice as to our targets. They obviously are interested and we’re possibly jealous when they saw us talking to other girls.

Tori is still just seemingly out of our league. My god they are huge. Jenna seems a bit stuck up. Kelci is a lot of fun but we don’t have too much of an attraction. That leaves Jaimee, Maureen, and Sarah....the three that came to see us earlier.

We proceed to all drink a shit ton and have a great time.

Again, you can probably guess who Tori is (bottom left). Kelci is bottom right, Wendal, our true American hero, is dead center. To our right is Jenna, and right of her is Jaimee. Sarah is to our left of Wendal, and I’m behind her. Apparently some creepy cocksucker named Dan is behind Wendal. But way in the back is Joe. Joe was cool as shit and we hung out with him with the Pitt crew. He was a VT grad also, so later we introduced him to the VT girls. I’m actually still Facebook friends with Joe to this day. Good fella.

Wendal decided to try out some yoga....

I think he just wanted to show off the biceps. Pretty impressive if you ask me. More on that later.

I also won a belly flop contest as evidenced here....

    Lifeguards were not amused.

The following picture is a tribute to BBQ. He was a good friend part of my bachelor party in another TR. Back in 2010 he was about 380 pounds but had a dance move irresistible to women. Put the damn finger in the air...look up...and wag that fucking finger.

Wendal and I try it out on Jaimee.

I’m not sure she was having it. Jaimee was one that Wendal and I both thought was one worth going after, but yesterday she seemed like quite a bitch. Her friends told us that day that she was just insanely hungover.

I may be understating how much Wendal and I have drank here on day 3 because of how detailed I was on the first two days. You’ll understand soon. I was slammed. Although I am quite possibly the most responsible drunk I know. I can be in the goddam bag and you may not even know.

Wendal and I take Jaimee, Maureen, (took the group picture, which is why she isn’t seen) and Sarah up to the hot tub in the corner area of the pool. It’s funny, no matter how hot it was (another high of 100) I LOVE a hot tub. The sad thing is, those hot tubs are now filled with sand at Flamingo pool. Benjamin Siegel wouldn’t approve.

We get the vibe that Sarah and Maureen are into Earl and Wendal respectively. Which is cool with me. Sarah is righteous! Sorry Jaimee!

We leave the pool but Sarah and Maureen come down to our room within 30 minutes after we all left pool.

Side note: on the way up, met this shitfaced guy at elevators. I distinctly remember bonding with him over the Staples commercial “WOW, THAT’S A LOW PRICE!”

From the time Maureen and Sarah come down to our our room from their suite......the story gets ridiculous.

Let me start this post by reminding you guys that Wendal and I were excellent wingmen for each other. If I wanted s girl to talk to him....I always had an in. If he wanted a girl to talk to me, he would find an in.

If either of us needed to close the deal, we usually had a pretty good way of doing so. I remember that same summer of 2010, we were downtown Clemson on a random Wednesday night. Wednesday was trivia night at a bar we frequented.

The problem was....man if we both drink, where will we stay, and how will we get there? He lived in Rock Hill, two hours away. I lived in Spartanburg area, an hour away.

“Ah hell man, we will find some girls to go home with.” Now please don’t think we were cocky assholes. We did not get laid a ton in college. I think the two of us may have combined to have sex with 5 women in college. Maybe. But we were so confident at that point together. We did end up going home with a pair of girls that night. In fact, we put them on our trivia team. As we are playing trivia, two girls walk by and say, HEY, what’s up??? We met these two girls in Rock Hill the weekend before.

“How do you girls know these guys?”

    “Oh we just met them.”

Rock Hill girl looks disgusted. “Oh so this is what y’all do? You just meet girls all the time?” We just kind of nodded and they walked away.

So we go home with these girls. Turns out Wendal’s girl just got out of a serious relationship and her ex called her and they talked for 2 hours. He slept on the couch. I had slightly (very slightly) better luck. But we found a place to sleep!

    Anyway....BACK TO VEGAS.....

Sarah and Maureen come to our room. It’s 6:00pm. Sarah is sitting on my queen bed. Maureen is sitting on Wendal’s queen bed. My drunk dumb ass....within 15 minutes of them being here....decides to take off my pants, climb into bed, turn off the lamp, and say “ok I guess let’s go to bed.”

Awkward silence fills the room enough to make Paul Simon not want to sing about it.

“Oooook we are gonna go to our room. See you guys later? Text us!” BOOM....door shuts.

    MIND YOU.....I AM OBLITERATED!

Wendal looks at me.....”what the fuck kind of move was that?”

“Yeah I didn’t think it through.”

I proceed to stand on the ground, facing my bed....and with my feet staying on the ground, my body collapses on the bed with a face plant similar to Ace Ventura at the mental hospital “halftime” scene.

And within a few minutes.....the entire trip changed drastically....or so I thought.....

I have now collapsed and passed out drunk before 7:00pm. I guess the last two nights caught up to me. Only about 8-9 hours of sleep the last two nights plus East-West coast time change.

I wake up and look around. Nobody is in the room. I check my phone. Shit! It’s 12:30am!!!!

I also have 6 missed calls from Wendal and a handful of texts. WHERE ARE YOU....DUDE GET DOWN HERE. SARAH WANTS YOU TO COME DOWN! WE ARE AT BILL’S!

I call Wendal like 5 times and text him where are you several times. Nothing. DAMMIT. I still feel so rough, that instead of getting dressed and going to find him....I just plop my ass in the bed and call it a night.

    Compared to Wendal’s night....I was a BITCH!

I finally wake up again and look at my phone. It’s 8:30am Saturday morning. I look over and say, damn Wendal, I sle......where’s Wendal?!?!?

This week occurs at a time in my life where I had just begun my professional career as a high school teacher. I spent 6 years as an undergraduate at Clemson. That’s right, 6. And every summer in between. Let’s just say I enjoyed the hell out of college. I spent August 2009-June 2010 saving money, and saying goodbye to college life. I guess when this trip hit me, College Earl woke his ass back up. I was a dumb kid all over again. And I once again, would enjoy the HELL out of the week, celebrating my favorite holiday in my new favorite city......INDEPENDENCE DAY!!

Back to the story....I suppose the next part occurs still on day 3, but I didn’t hear about it until day 4. So....

    July 3, 2010
    Day 4:

When I woke up, I was coming off of three consecutive 100% effort drinking days. I had also just slept more than I had the previous 3 nights combined. It’s a refreshing feeling that still has an aftertaste or exhaustion. By 8:30am I had called Wendal, only to go straight to voicemail, and texted him numerous times asking his whereabouts.

I was starving, as food was not too present thus far in the trip. The past two days had been spent eating three meals worth for lunch at Flamingo buffet. I headed down to the food court soon after 8:30. One of those places served breakfast, maybe Johnny Rockets. I sat in silence alone while downing as much fluids as I could while I ate breakfast.

I went back upstairs and still no Wendal to be found. It was now Saturday, the day before 4th of July, and by 10am I could hear/see the pool party getting going. I figured Wendal would turn up eventually. I grabbed our expensive ass sunscreen we bought at gift shop and headed down. Totally sober for the first time, I just kind of floated myself around the pool, saying hi to several people we had met the last couple of days.

“Where’s Wendal?” I just had to tell these folks that I had no idea. Nobody seemed concerned so I didn’t either.

    “Vegas, Dude.”

I kept getting out of the pool to check my phone for signs of life every 10 minutes. It’s also amazing the difference in one guy in the pool, versus two guys together in the pool. I would strike up a conversation with some ladies.

    “Are you here by yourself?”

“No, I’m here with a buddy.” I figured without a wingman this was going to be a tall order. Figured I would go to what had been working all week. “We both teach and are here for a week.”

It didn’t light up their eyes like it did. Maybe they didn’t believe me. “Where is your friend?”

My only response was, “I actually don’t know. Haven’t heard from him since last night.”

“Maybe you should check the roof.” I pondered actually doing it as they swam away slowly. I went back to my phone one more time. Bingo! A text from Wendal!

“Think of the big thing that could have possibly happened.”

My mind wandered all over the place. I texted back.....you won a jackpot??? No response. What happened???? No response. What the hell???

It was nearly noon and still I had no idea where Wendal was. All I knew was that he wasn’t dead. Good enough for me. I sat in my pool chair up in the corner towards the hot tubs in the shade with my mind racing through what he could possibly have meant by that text. Big thing that could have happened??? I just kept hoping it was a good thing. Hopefully a huge jackpot somewhere.

“Hey!” I looked up from my phone. Wendal was standing in front of me, beer in hand, swim trunks on.

“Dude where have you been? What happened? What big thing happened??? Did you win a jackpot?”

“What? Oh...no. I saw Tori naked.”

Oh good lord man. Although that is a good thing, it upset me. Why the hell does he get to and I don’t? Damn you Wendal. He proceeded to summarize the night as we went to the bar for a party bucket.

The following is based on wha Wendal told me, and time stamps from the pictures on his digital camera.

After the girls left our hotel room when my “plan” backfired, he said within a few minutes I was knocked out. He tried shaking me to wake me up, but no use. So he walked downstairs and played some Craps at Bill’s. He also learned there were $5 pitchers of beer at the bar there. A couple of hours later he went up to the Pittsburgh girls room. They were getting ready to go out, but not to a club. They didn’t know what they wanted to do.

Wendal spent some hours in the room drinking with the girls. Some other guys were there they had met somewhere. I have a couple of pictures from them pregaming a bit....and a 3 minute video that was filmed by Wendal.

Wendal and Kelci shown above. Since I can’t post the video, I’ll summarize with a couple of screenshots.

Apparently everybody was dancing to the Cha Cha slide. The funniest part of watching the video is Wendal zooming in on asses every time a girl would shake it. Wendal is certainly an ass man.
