What was the first album you purchased?

I had a bunch of Beatles 45RPMs as well. I remember back in the day going to Woolworth's and picking up 45RPMs based on Casey Kasem's American Top 40.

 

Bought my first album in the early 70s - unfortunately I don’t remember much of anything during that decade. Might have something to do with the wide array of intoxicants that I sampled back then...

I know that some of the first albums I bought I bought when I was in 4th or 5th grade. So it was bubble gum stuff like Partridge Family and Donny Osmond.

When I grew up a little and graduated to more grown up music the first rock album I bought was Jethro Tull Aqualung. I also babysat for some people who introduced me to CSN&Y and Jim Croce.

My folks took us to the Ohio state fair in Columbus and we saw the Ike and Tina Turner Revue.
I bought their album immediately upon our return to Akron. Pretty sure it was this one.

 

I’m pretty sure it was the Dick Tracy soundtrack, almost exclusively because Madonna’s “Vogue” was on it... go figure, since the song was so important to me for so long, but after learning and re-analyzing some things I have a much different opinion about the song and the singer (to say more would be, to put it mildly, tiptoeing into politics so I’ll be good )...

 

Man, that was a trip down the ol' lane. I never got into 45 jams at all, or even LP's. Taped off the radio. Reel to reel. Junker my father fixed, which also described practically every electronic gadget or household appliance, large or small, that we ever owned. It was years before I learned the words to some songs because the sound on those recordings was so poor.

What LP's we had in the house were ones he had "liberated" because they came in and no one else wanted them, or after they had been played to death as demos in the Sears store. Classical, mostly, which I came to love. One or two polka records, which were fun to put on and crank up with the arm off as I left the house, for the benefit of sleeping siblings.

But I did buy LP's to give as gifts. Probably the first was either Harry Belafonte at Carnegie Hall (a double album), or Kingston Trio at the Hungry i.

I taped off the radio, too. I remember the jocks talking over the intro and station IDs during the bridge so you'd be forced to buy the 45 if you wanted the song "clean!"

 

I sound just like your sister. My first Album was America's Greatest Hits -- they had great hair. My favorite song Sister Golden Hair Surprise.

 

i saw Ike and Tins Turner Revue on my first trip to las vegas in 1975. The Matre D told us to wait till the last minute to go to our seats because the show wasn't sold out and we could get better seats(the ones they save for the high rollers). Love story short..we ended up sitting front center in a high back cushioned half moon table. Tina came off stage and came to our table and sang a few verses of something(was in heaven cause she was my favorite singer) looking at me about a foot away. I was only 18 so I thought that was the ultimate...and still do. I only wish I could remember what she was singing. Guess I was just lucky Ike didn't come off the stage and beat the hell out of me or tina..

 

So yes, I was roughly 16 or 17 when I finally purchased my first album by the Cars, their debut album entitled "The Cars".

Prior to that when I asked my old man for money for an album, he would say: "Why do you need that, just turn on the radio, that's free"- lol! He added, "If you want to waste money on things like albums, get yourself a job." So that's exactly what I did.

I got my first album around the same time I got my first paycheck from my lucrative position as grill man at Steak-N-Shake. If I remember correctly, my hourly pay was $2.50 an hour, lol.

That was also around the same period of time when I attended my first live concert.

I went to see Rod Stewart, one of my all time favorite songs is "Maggie Mae".

And no, my pop did not attend Rod Stewart's concert with me, not when you could hear Rod on the radio for free, lol!

 

I was fortunate enough to see the Tina Turner musical in NYC in February. If you’re ever in NYC I’d highly recommend it.

 

The first just for me, with my own money, was Johnny's Horton's Greatest Hits ("North to Alaska", etc). I still have it somewhere. Before that, I would buy my father Dixieland Jazz records for Christmas ...
