Just ran across this documentary of the making of Luxor. Found it pretty cool, wish I would have had the chance to experience it the way it was first built.

    Check it out...

Good stuff @JRRestoule, thanks for the post.

That video definitely highlights the brief period of “Family Friendliness” from the 90s.

Oooh I miss the glory days of the Luxor so much. Sad at the end too when the man said it would never close.

Is it still sinking or has it subsided already?

    Thanks for this.

Wanting to see this awesome spectacle drove me to start hounding my ex sister in law who was a travel agent (remember them?) about Las Vegas trips..

I still encourage anyone who's never stayed in the pyramid to stay there once. It is a unique experience.

My first trip to Vegas was to LVH for Star Trek: The experience. Never made it to the south end of the strip. Found out about Luxor a few months after I got home. That drove my interest in going back, and the rest is history.

A friend and I went there for lunch a week or so after it opened.
We were under-whelmed. You could tell it was a Circus-Circus property.
Coffee shop food was also Circus-Circus quality.

Our home away from home. Our first night in the motherland was at Lux and we stay there at least for a part of every single trip. My trip countdown shows that we would have been there next week. Oh well! It gets such a bad rap but we still love it there. It has personality at least unlike Aria which to me feels like a cafeteria. Then again I have no style, I buy my clothes at Costco....

I don't know if it's sinking (I heard Mandalay Bay was), but it's definitely leaking.

I attended the Mosconi Cup last Thanksgiving, and stayed at the Luxor. It rained a couple of days, and when I returned to my room one afternoon, there was a nice stream of water leaking onto the table in my room. The front desk was very nice, and moved me to a Tower room for my last night. The bellman who brought up the new key said it happens all the time when it rains. He said the entire pyramid has been re-caulked twice since they first opened. Apparently, having all of those sloping panes of glass, is a real pain. Good thing it doesn't rain much in Las Vegas.

Luxor was the first hotel I stayed at as a child thanks to my sister. Took us to Tournament of the Kings next door at Excalibur. Been hooked on Vegas ever since. Have yet to stay there since however lol saw this documentary previously and gives perspective on the build.

I remember taking the Nile River ride and realizing that I was just scenery for the people in the casino. Still a fun theme. There’s a book called Super Casino by Pete Earley published in 2001 that has excellent stories from the time between Circus Circus and Luxor.

I stayed at Luxor not long after it opened. I have always stated in the past that, IMO, Luxor should never have opened the adjoining towers, it just never complemented the Pyramid. What they should have done to add rooms was build another Pyramid/s just like in Giza. The property on Luxor land with the Pyramid, the Sphinx, Obelisk, Statues, etc. is one of the best in Vegas, minus the Towers.

I used to stay on the South Strip in the 90's most of the time, but primarily at MGM, NYNY, and my home base at Monte Carlo. But Luxor was and still is one of the places i always visit when i'm in Town.

I took pics of Luxor before they ruined it. To me, having the Towers besides the Pyramid, instead of another smaller Pyramid/s like in Giza, is obscene. In my opinion, the Strip never should have de-themed the resorts, in fact they should have themed to the max. I'm speaking to you MGM and company.

You can't have partially themed resorts.....you either have fully themed resorts or no theme at all. However, i'm a glutton for punishment, so i manage to keep going to Vegas despite that........maybe one day i'll bump into "Dorothy" again and see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow......:D

I think the original plan was to also build matching towers on the south side of the pyramid as well. Never came through, obviously.
