    - Check our UCLA’s housing options/resources, they have a lot for students and there is affordable living in other parts of LA if she’s down for roommates. It’s a gorgeous campus and a great school. I’ve heard good things about USC too.

But yes overall cost of living in LA is higher than Vegas and the area. I just moved from San Diego to Los Angeles and my rent for a one bedroom is the same in both - $1,500.

In my research about moving to Vegas (still working on my exit strategy for now), I found this book that was helpful to me. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16128780-everyday-las-vegas
Just people living their lives in a place that lots of outsiders have an entrenched, often incorrect idea of what the place even is. Best of luck on where your next chapter takes you.

One point I didn't see in any of the posts above is that although Las Vegas can be less costly, the salaries -- depending on where you are moving from -- can also be less, potentially a lot less, so everything is relative. That underscores some of the suggestions made to ideally have employment in hand BEFORE the move.

I definitely won't be moving before I have a job lined up.

Feel free to PM me about the moving process -- mine was basically out of necessity (I have a job that can basically only be done from Las Vegas, so if I wanted to do it full-time, I didn't have much of a choice).

I have no reason to doubt your daughter's abilities, but be sure to keep in mind that most of the universities in California have become VERY impacted and in the last several years and admission has become extremely competitive, even schools that back in my day were not considered competitive at all. As a near-worst-case example, see the UCLA 2019 admitted class profile (notice that the top table is applicants, whereas the middle table is admitted students). Also, out of state tuition for UCs is very expensive, so make sure you meet residency requirements. My understanding is that UC Merced is an exception and has more spaces available than students who want to go there. Unless the impending recession changes things, the big public schools in nearby states such as Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico accept a much greater proportion of their applicants, and I understand that U. of Arizona in particular is quite generous with financial aid grants for out-of-state students. Go Cats! A close friend of mine who coaches students on applying to college has a lot of positive things to say about the honors programs at UA, UNLV, etc.

If you have so much flexibility and you aren't moving to Vegas for the gambling, have you considered any of the other areas in the West? Arizona for example is beautiful and interesting and quite affordable. I lived in Tucson 1995-2001 and rents in many parts of town haven't gone up much since then. I've lived most of my life in California (handle notwithstanding) and I love many things about California, but it has frankly gotten difficult to make ends meet here in the coastal cities, even on a pretty good salary, due to the high rents and real estate prices. Also, many people who aren't from here are appalled by the traffic; those of us who grew up here just expect it to take an hour to get pretty much anywhere you need to go, or more if it's rush hour. The Los Angeles area has 19 million people and they all have to live somewhere and drive somewhere else. One place in Southern California that is still relatively affordable is the Palm Desert/Indio area. You can buy a nice house there for around $300k, a condo for considerably less. If you can bear the heat (and it's HOT in the summer), but it's something of an acquired taste, and you can find work, you could do much worse.

Only two factors are keeping me from moving to Vegas and becoming a professional sports bettor: Lack of bankroll, and the fact that I can't pick games very effectively. Once I get those two nailed, Sin City here I come!

Something else to think about. Water is going to become even more of an issue within the next decade. Lake Mead is at its lowest levels in history, and rainfall does not keep up with demand.
My brother lives near Elko (northern part of state) and according to him, Vegas has been wheeling/dealing unsuccessfully to access Northern Nevadas water sources.
Best of luck in your search!

This pandemic has me re-thinking my plan. While much of Las Vegas is out of work, here in the Midwest I've been able to keep my job and salary at 100% pay, my small town has never ran out of supplies at the local stores (except TP), and I've since entered a serious relationship with a very nice woman who has a work-from-home job. She would like to move to Nevada also, but she has a 14-year-old and can't move for several years. I've come to appreicate the "boring" Midwest in a way I never did before.

We're keeping our eyes open and will try to make the best decision for us. No matter what, we'll never stop visiting Las Vegas!

Nothing new here, though some models project that we're at the beginning of an Anasazi-extinquishing-like drought cycle. Again, none of this is new. The basin allocations from the early part of the 20th were SO far out of whack with the historic reality of the watershed, that's where it started going sideways in the modern era.

For the immediate future, your life will probably be about the same no matter where you are on Earth. Sitting at home, surfing the internet, watching Netflix. etc.

Cost of living, especially housing, is VERY cheap in LV compared to most of SoCal. That $1000 rental in Redondo is probably one bedroom in a shared house.

That said, Indio is very cheap compared to Newport Beach LOL.

It's all relative. My place in Vegas is a fraction of what I paid in NYC, with better amenities and more space. I could probably get a pretty big house for what I'm paying now, I just have no use for it.

Congratulations on the new love interest!:love: Yes, you are among the fortunate who is still working, getting full pay, etc. It may be a blessing that you hadn't moved quite yet. And Vegas will be there if and when you do decide to move or visit with your new friend. :)

I've been hearing that health care in Las Vegas is consistently poor, in fact ranked last (50th) of all states, in terms of quality of care. Does anyone know first-hand if that is true?

Based on what snippets we've seen here, "first-hand" seems to indicate it's great/it's shitty. This is something where the collective ranking/analytical services are going to far more accurately serve you than the one-off experiences of a few LVAers. Insurers, facilities, who accesses what quality, rural v. urban ...

I doubt Nevada's dead last but you can readily read up on this rather than solely banking on "I've been hearing."

    Good luck.

    https://www.reviewjournal.com/life/health/nevada-again-lands-at-bottom-of-national-health-care-ranking/

It would seem that access to primary care and specialist physicians is the chief complaint.
