    Your thoughts on a chromebook?

I'm thinking of buying one for my mom. She's in her 80's and is really only going to check her emails, some websurfing like paying her bills, shopping, etc. She will never be a gamer. No Word/Excel etc

Would you recommend a chromebook? Or should I just spring for a cheap laptop?

    Thanks in advance.

I love my Chromebook... bought it for about $200 on Black Friday. My only two complaints are that it doesn't have Office... and even though this is my internet surfing computer, I am amazed at how often I wish I had Excel at my fingertips.

The other is that the keyboard isn't like a normal keyboard. The letters seem a little far apart and it took a LONG time to get used to it. As a matter of fact, I am writing my current trip report on my laptop because I am forever backspacing on the Chromebook.

But for internet surfing and watching of videos? I love it.

I use a chrome book and like it. One drawback is that eventually Google won’t let you download Chrome updates. Things like YouTube and other apps may not work. They have a max # and then your device won’t support updates. It was about 6 years old when we had to replace the old chrome books and replace.

Cost wise - Chromebooks are the way to go.

Chromebooks have end of life issues, Google stops updating them after 6.5 years and then you own a paperweight that really should be sent to an electronics recycling center. You can check your end of life date, see lifehacker article link

I am on my 2nd Chromebook - absolutely love them! lightweight - easy to use-can't get a virus- easy to travel with... both of them are Lenova.

I have one, it's great for traveling, as far as the end of life issues that was mentioned, you can keep using it as long as you want, updates are not really needed.

I know it’s not exactly the same but have you tried using Google Sheets? It’s a pretty powerful spreadsheet. It might not be as powerful as excel but it does most everything. Just some slight relearning but it’s not too bad.

But then there is also Office365 where you’ll have access to full blown excel.

I have 2 chromebooks and I like them. They're inexpensive and boot up quickly, great for web browser stuff but printing used to be a challenge till I got a newer printer. I think it will work for your mother. I've had cheap Windows machines and they never seem to have enough memory or CPU power. You can get a nice chromebook for 200 bucks.
