Table Games Kudos to Park MGM, allowed a kid with Down Syndrome to shoot dice!

This was a first, was shooting craps at Park MGM when an adorable 11 or 12 year old girl with down syndrome came to the table with, what I would assume, were her parents. She could not have been any older than 12, and they let her shoot the dice. I didn't even think this was legal, due to her age, but I did think it was very big and classy of the casino! She held the dice for a few minutes, hit a couple numbers and one point, then a 7 out. She had a great time, huge smile on her face, as well as on mine.

 

I'm VERY surprised that they allowed her in the gaming area, let alone let her even hold the dice!

Is there a "Rest of the story" here?

 

I was shocked too, and I swear this is a 100% true story. It’s like everyone was happy she had a good time, and didn’t mention anything about age. What more of a story should there be here?

 

Maybe she of age to gamble, just didn’t look it?

 

I think it is absolutely wonderful. My bet is that her parents got permission in advance. And I'm pretty sure she and no one was allowed to make a bet.

I wish I was there. I would've put candy as place bets and Baskin and Robbins gift certificates in the Come box along with 100X odds of Hershey Kisses on the pass line.

 

It could have been "set up" in advance. The "eye in the sky" would have picked this up.

 

That would be my guess for a Rest Of The Story (tm).

A few years back at the local Ameristar I was surprised to notice a very juvenile looking female playing at a slant-top slot machine. She looked like she was maybe 11-12 years old, really. Size, facial features, etc.

There was a security guy nearby so I approached him and said something like "Uh, this is probably none of my business, but I think you have somebody well underage playing at a machine over there."

He said that if I was referring to the person he thought I was, and then briefly described her, that they had checked her out very carefully and verified that she was, indeed, of age.

It's either something like that or else the entire table crew and pit staff were fired and the casino was fined by the TLA.

I seriously doubt that the staff or management at any level would have the authority to make an exception to the 21 and over rule!

 

She looked YOUNG, I mean at most maybe 13, point being, no where close to 21. I mean, I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Everyone was betting on her, they did not pull the table and let her roll for fun. As mentioned, the hit a couple number and a point. Didn't roll for long at all. Maybe the casino just did it to be kind and thoughtful?

 

I would bet she was of age but just wasn't obvious. There is almost no way in hell the gaming board would let a casino allow a child to roll the dice and def would not let people bet on those throws if the person was not of age. No matter the situation, that would almost assuredly get the casino a HEAVY fine if not some thing more dramatic.

Yeah. I used to work in casino security, and there's no way in hell they knowingly let a minor gamble. She must have been of age and just didn't look it. I'm not a doctor, but my experience with folks with Downs is that they often look very young for their age.

 

The most I could see them do is maybe set up a table and let someone roll on it, but to allow people to bet on throws made by a 13 year old, no way. Not a chance in hell.

 

Yes, most likely of age, just has a physical ailment that causes her to look like a child. Still very cool though!

 

I agree. My uncle had Downs Syndrome and looked way younger than his 34 years when he passed away. I was way too young to know but I bet he looked underage when he was 21.

By any chance would they (casino) allow her to roll dice if SHE did not place a bet? Otherwise I also would lean toward her just looking young but actually of age. Either way, I would have loved to have been on that table just to see the happiness in her face as she rolled the bones!!

 

Had to be of age. Law is the law and no way a casino is risking this. I live in Vegas and often walk through casinos with my 3 year old daughter. We stop anywhere near a machine for even couple seconds security is on us with a friendly reminder.

 

Am I missing something here, or are you actually suggesting that a casino would let a minor roll on a live craps table to be "kind and thoughtful"???

 

No, you're not missing anything. I think they took her situation into account, which is a big part of the message you might be missing. If the was 21, then great, didn't look like it to me. If she wasn't, seemed like a really cool thing to do.

 

Yeah, it was just a feel good story, was a really good feeling at the table.

 

There is no major casino on earth that would eat the 5-6 figure fine they'd get for this. They age checked this young looking person, or they had definitively turned this "off" as a non-gaming area.

Or the parents are the biggest whales at Park MGM

 

They could OWN the Park MGM and the betting is the part that makes this not work for me. If you let an underage person roll the dice and the table full of players lose, what's to stop them from claiming it was an unfair roll because she was 13. If they win, the casino could call it a no roll because she is not of age. And again, casinos routinely ask VERY sternly to parents with kids to makes sure they are no where near the games. They are asked to stay on the 'paths' within the casino when the kids are with them and those paths don't lead to the craps tables.
