Tell me why I should go out of my way to visit South Point.

I'm surprised by this review, I've eaten there many times and thought it was average or above for the price point. I hope it was just a bad day for them and not the new normal.

There isn't a buffet in LV without some 4 star glowing reviews, along with 0 star, "I'll never go again" reviews. So, not surprising to read any single review/rating.

 

And that's not just buffets. It's everything in the service world.

 

With an 12.7% factor of trolls/PR impacting the numbers.

 

And let's face it, nice good-hearted people like we see here also foul the waters, without really intending to do so. A one-off "bad" experience sends the score plunging. Another who thinks Outback is overpriced hammers Delmonico simply because of the pricing. The simple harmless joy of being on vacation and actually overlooking legit problems and tossing out 5-star awards regardless.

 

Im not any sort of foodie.
Ive eaten at the South Point buffet numerous times. It gets the job done, nothing special.
My one complaint would be the breakfast deserts, pastries are really bad.
Some seemed stale, others half-frozen and this wasn't just on one occasion.

 

Agree on the breakfast pastries. My experience at their dinner buffet was fine but nothing outstanding. The fact that I ate on a comp may have colored my take a bit. Some of the dishes looked great and tasted good, others looked inedible and I stayed away. Had I payed sticker price, I would have not been a happy camper. Their other F&B options are the main thing that recommends the place. The best thing I can say definitively about the buffet is that it is there.

 

I have never stayed there but have gambled there a few times. I like it but don’t get down that way much.

 

We stayed at South Point a few times back in 2013/14. (Some of my first VMB trip reports.) We haven't been back for a few years, but I still have a real soft spot for the place every time we cruise by on the 15 en route to a different hotel.

I never played enough to get comps, but I still really liked the whole hotel. To me it has all the amenities of a big resort but is super easy to navigate and get anywhere on property within a couple minutes. Nice pool area. I loved Primarily Prime Rib, even though it's such a dumb name for a restaurant. The deli is good and affordable. The prices in the gift shop are (or at least were) surprisingly reasonable. Bowling alley was fun, and the coupons in the fun book were decent.

The location is really the main deterrent. Also, room prices have risen substantially since 13/14. Someday I plan to stay there again.

Oh yeah, they have bingo, too!

Edit: How did I forget to mention $1 Bloody Marys in the mornings? Anyone know if they still have that deal?

 

The posts from smerrian and mjames1229 convinced me to try South Point on my last trip and I have to admit that I was mightily impressed. Decent VP. Good poker. Clean. Friendly. And I heard that they had renovated the buffet so I tried it and I liked it, and I don't normally care much for buffets.

I believe that I would make that my home base were it closer to other casinos, especially those with poker rooms.

 

Yes to the $1 Bloody Marys. Still there as of early November.

 

This is the reason to visit. If you have Boyd withdrawal, South Point will give you the old school Coast experience without having to deal with the current Boyd players club. Regular rooms are closest to Suncoast. As a tourist, I don't get much of anything in terms of offers outside of occasional discounted nights. But I have fun gambling there so I make a point to drop in every other trip or so.

 

Poker tourneys are well run and who doesn’t like the $1.25 Hotdogs from the cart across from the Vsin studio?

 

Always see a line at that cart, never tried one, maybe next time.

 

Highly recommend you do. I like em with sauerkraut. Good dogs.

 

Chili Relleno with Eggs at the Coronado Cafe for breakfast. You will eat every bit of the tomatillo sauce.

Hot Dog Cart is good too.

 

I'm ready for that! Can't wait to return.

 

as a Wyndham member I can generally get $30 rooms at the grandview, so I tend to gamble at Southpoint, overall I hate that craps only lets you have 2x odds
