Yeah I am a he and I can only assume Karen was a she, having a common last name you just have to roll with the mishaps. I have trouble ordering a pizza back home, b/c they don't believe my name! :(

The nightmare would be arriving with your wife.... and trying to explain at the front desk what was going on while you had no idea was going on but still, getting the evil eye and receiving preliminary divorce paperwork.

How would you handle something like this? I know that you would be uneasy about someone staying on YOUR offer...

Re-reading the OP's post, my reaction (which, ironically enough, aligns EXACTLY with what the "stereotypical" Karen would do :) ) would have been to get a manager or supervisor of some kind involved. Clearly, an error of some kind happened, and someone was incorrectly given my room under my rate. Unless the hotel was at or near capacity, this wouldn't be terribly difficult to fix... but it's not something that an associate-level employee would be able to do themselves.

Under absolutely no circumstance would I consent to paying the "going rate" as the front desk clerk suggested. My promotional rate wasn't "used"... it was "incorrectly assigned". Which, again, is not a terribly difficult problem to fix. But it also isn't my problem to bear in the meantime, especially if it involves consenting to pay a higher rate, even just as a formality that may ultimately get fixed. My instructions would be "Please check me in based on my offer as booked", and they can figure out the rest themselves... I'm not going to play secretary and figure it out for them. They made the error and that's unfortunate (and it's not a big deal), but implicating me as a customer just isn't cool.

I also would not seek to involve Karen in any way. She probably doesn't know there was an error with her check-in, and I'm in no position to disrupt her vacation just because that error ultimately ended up affecting me.

Back when Boyd gave me comps, my buddy always wanted to stay at Sam's Town, so I booked it.

Check in was fast and efficient with one little teensy-weensy drawback. We got to the room, I used my key card to unlock the door and walked in upon a middle aged woman and her two adult daughters getting dressed to go out for the evening. I pointed to our bags and shouted, "THEY GAVE US KEYS TO THIS ROOM!!! SORRY!!!!!!!"

They eventually determined that two old men, one who could barely walk, were not murders or serial rapists.

Exactly, my wife would have for sure thought I was up to something! Once years ago my work insurance had listed #2 spouses under my dependents, for lack of memory we can say that my second listed spouse's name was Karen! :kill:

Just for shits and giggles if the receptionist asked who is Karen I would've looked at the receptionist, put one finger on my mouth and say a loud SHHHSSSSSSSS!!!!!...…..

Then look sideways at my wife and give her my most guilty look....:kill:

I am hard pressed to believe that I would have chased down a host to solve their problem.

My question is, why did you originally book the reservation with the cheap nights comped and the expensive nights paid? I've booked a comp/paid reservation at Fremont several times over the years, and the reservationist always made the lower-rate nights the paid nights and the higher-rate nights the comped nights.
