What's the longest Vegas trip you can do only bringing the underseat personal item?

I gave up the big honking must-check and carry on luggage about 2 years ago. My trips are 4 days and I backpack-underseat it.

Very strategic packing is involved.

 

I've done 3-nighters with just my Timbuk2 bag under seat but any longer than that would be stretching it. I tend to like to bring 2 changes of sock/tee/undies per day, and I also bring an iPad and a Bluetooth speaker along on trips so that eats up small bag space quickly.

I'm doing a 4-nighter in March with Allegiant and I shelled out for the carry-on and priority boarding. I'm at the point where if I can buy my way to greater comfort and convenience while traveling I will gladly do so.

 

10 nights no problems.

I plan my wardrobe “capsule style”
I usually have empty space in my bag for purchases and I do bring a packable tote just in case.
It’s nice not lugging around a bunch of luggage.

It's got nothing to do with money for me. More the ease of movement and self-sufficiency traveling light bestows. Our 4-day February trips involve a packing list that would fit on a 3"x5" card; the clothing is virtually the same year to year.

I don't need extra space, I don't go to Las Vegas to shop. When am I going to bother with an iPad? I'm in my room only to sleep, s**t, and shower. I've never wanted for anything, but Las Vegas is bigger than my home metro area -- pretty sure I can buy what I need in an emergency.

Caught me, there! Haven't worn them in about 53 years. They had little footie bottoms and were printed with cowboys and indians.

 

I do 5 and mail my dirty clothes home and then have room for souvenirs for the kids

There are some shoes that do not need breaking in. The last pair I got recently were white wide sneakers, that I tie in a way I can use them as loafers, they feel like slippers. I guess in buying shoes in Vegas you must be careful and, as with anything in Vegas, lucky.

Yes, it was you who told us in your last trip report how you needed shoes for an occasion, and the process of going about that. I always find your trip reports enjoyable and informative, and I thank you now for your post here which makes many good points. For the longest stay I had in Vegas long ago, 11 days at Bellagio, I just took a carry on, a standard size one that I stored overhead in the plane, and a personal item that I stored under the seat. How did I manage with that? There was plenty, as I packed carefully. I used, as you commented, the laundry services in the hotel, I got new items in Vegas, and I threw away some shoes that came apart. I did not make any "best dressed" list, but I was comfortable.

 

Interesting post, it would be less days in the winter because of coats, hoodies, etc. Since I’ve permanently writing off Vegas from Nov - April, I could do 3 nights with one bag. With that said, I would wear a lot of my items (double up) on the flight, which would help.

 

And as with every this/no that decision in Vegas that's bandied about at VMB ... it's all personal.

We generally look like we’re moving to Saudi Arabia when we pack for Las Vegas. Workouts, pool, fine dining, hanging out, electric kettle, iPads, etc. We don’t pay bag fees and our Vegas rooms have big closets, so we tend to include rather than exclude. For us there is no prize for being minimalists.

 

There is backpacking and there is Vegas packing. The two are not mutually inclusive.

 

True that, but it’s still fun to talk about! I like these discussions because I always glean some new bit of knowledge or a new trick.

 

the older i get the more i seem to pack -- wouldve thought it would go the other way around. in my early 20s i would sometimes just take a backpack or a small duffel and trips were usually at least 3-4 nights. now i easily need a regular carry-on plus my personal item for the same length trip.

 

None.....wouldn’t even contemplate the idea while travelling

 

For me i can comfortably do 3-5 day trips in one of those, assuming its a warmer destination and not much pants, 1/4 zips.

 

In the summer with less bulky clothes I could do 5-7 night easy with my trusty Swiss Gear pack. If in the winter I could probably manage the same with one trip to a laundromat. I did 3 weeks in Guatemala backpacking with it but laundry was cheap as hell, like 1 Q per item (around 7 Q to the dollar), whether it was a sock or a sweater.

Curious why since SWA doesn't charge extra to use the overhead or even to check a bag.

 

Lol. The jeans and sneakers I wear on the airplane are good for the week. I'm retired. I don't dress up for anybody or anything...except weddings and funerals.
