Hi everyone. Hope you can help out a first time visitor to Vegas with some advice on where to stay. My wife and I are arriving in mid May 2020 for 5 nights and haven't booked a hotel yet. The sheer amount of choice of hotels and different room types is frankly mind boggling!

We have a reasonable budget (we hope) of up to $300/night all in but could be flexible on that. As its our first time we want to enjoy the Vegas experience and so I guess we should aim to stay around the Strip but we are torn on whether to go for a completely over the top kitsch (the Venetian?) hotel or something more refined (the Wynn?).

We are mobile and so don't mind walking. We are not interested in clubs or pool parties. In fact we would prefer sedate pool areas, either guests only or at least usually plenty of space if they are open to the public.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks all.

Both are very nice resorts and you really can't go wrong. Assuming both options are in your budget, I would pick Wynn. Its non-dayclub pool area is a bit more sedate and nicer IMO. The standard rooms at Wynn are nicer too. plus, If you want to see the Venetian kitsch, its next door to Wynn and connected (through Palazzo) by a bridge. So you can still walk through there and check it out. Have fun

I'd actually say neither and look at Aria or Cosmo. For your first time I think it would be better to stay center strip then to stay all the way at the northern end. Gives you more places to explore without having to trek that far.

If you have narrowed it down to those two I would recommend Wynn/Encore. As @UKFanatic stated, base level rooms are nicer (although Venetian/Palazzo are very nice base level rooms as well, imo the service is better (staff is friendlier), and the pool area is a little more sedate, particularly on the Encore side.

I'm a big V/P fan, but can't recommend Wynning highly enough.

There is almost no bad choice on the strip. You will be in overload just walking the strip/casinos/hotels/shopping and room will not matter much.

You have selected two more expensive properties which does not always mean better rooms or bang for your buck.

You mentioned $300 a night - is that for hotel and fees only, or does that include food.

Personally, I would book more center strip. Paris, Mirage would be great choices.

Balcony at Cosmo is really special, but expensive.

Tell us what sort of hotels you normally stay in when you travel - that might help a bit.

And, you will find that dates matter alot.

I just looked at monthly calendar for Mirage and standard rooms run from $67 to $339. All for the same room, just different dates.

If the V/P wasn't that much more generous with comps (three nights comped is pretty much available to me all the time), I'd be at Wynn/Encore pretty much exclusively.

For your first trip you might want to think more center strip as has been mentioned. With that said if you have narrowed down to those 2 I'd opt V/P. Being closer to the heart of the action. Both are fantastic properties.

You cannot really go wrong with either, in fact we will be at the Wynn in May too. However for a first trip I would go more central such as Cosmo or Bellagio. Our first trip was at The hotel (now Delano), and although the trip was great we wished we were more central. Now we have been several times, location is not as important as we do not need to cram as much in.

I don’t think you can go wrong with either property. My experience with Wynn was fantastic, with a fantastic pool area that is guests only. Of those to properties I would probably lean Wynn based on my personal tastes and preferences.

$300/night is pretty generous and gives you a LOT of flexibility and access to the finer joints on the strip. Bellagio, Cosmo, and Aria are also in the same class. I prefer Aria over Bellagio, but my wife loves the quiet, relaxing pool at B.

    Good luck!

I kind of wish I had not stayed in Encore Tower Suites the first time I went to Vegas because they set such a high bar, it’s difficult not to nitpick other places when I want to try something different. I do love trying new places, so have stayed at several others since that first trip, but I always find myself drawn back to Wynn or Encore as no other places I have stayed has really measured up to the overall satisfaction I have from staying at Wynncore. It’s not that I haven’t had fun or been happy with the other places we have tried, I just always find myself at some point on the trip saying “I wish I had stayed at Wynn.” My next trip we are starting out at Encore Tower Suites for 2 nights then moving to Aria Sky Suites for 3 nights and I have high hopes for Aria mainly due to the experiences shared by people on this board. Whichever hotel we choose in Vegas is really about the service and the creature comforts and not about the comps because I like to do my gambling downtown anyways, which I know people probably look at as a waste of potential comp value, but it’s where I like to play my cards, and I like the contrast of the smaller, some may call seedier Cortez and other spots, and returning to the opulence of the strip for our non gambling activities.

    Both are beautiful resorts.
I know you mentioned you have no mobility issues but if this is your first trip to Vegas it is likely that everything will appear closer then it really is.
The Wynn while on the strip is a noticeable walk to anything. (if you are planning to stay mostly at the resort you pick then I would say go with the Wynn)
If you are planning to walk a lot and see the sights then I would say of the 2, go with Venetian. It is much closer to the rest of the strip.

this is very true, and even more so if you’re staying at Encore instead of Wynn. The first time I walked from Mirage to Encore on my first trip I thought it was going to be a 5 minute walk because Wynn looked so much closer than it was. It wasn’t an unenjoyable long walk but it was MUCH further away then it looked. The scale of the Vegas hotels and the trick they do with the windows to make 2 stories look like one on a building can really throw your ability to judge distance off. Plus OP would have the rest of the strip on one side and Wynncore on the other so really that’s a good compromise.

Thanks for your reply, the Venetian and Wynn were just meant as examples of different styles of hotel whilst both being of a high standard. We're really open to suggestions re other hotels but would prefer a reasonably high standard ie 4* or more which is what we tend to choose normally. The budget of $300 is including tax and resort fees but not food.

Which brings me to the subject of restaurants but I think I'll save that for another post as I'm still working through all the really useful responses to this one!

Then I would suggest Cosmopolitan (depending on the dates the $300 per night may or may not work there)
The service is on par with Wynn (in my opinion) and it is located in the center of the strip.
If restaurants are a topic at all.. it might have the best selection out of any casino on the strip.

Some great tips here, thanks everyone. From what I'm reading, the Wynn sounds best for quality but maybe not the best option for someone who wants to really get the Vegas experience on a first time visit. Re the more central options, does anyone have a view re which have the quieter, more private pools as its quite difficult to pick this up from the hotel websites?

Also, we've heard stories about how expensive it is to spend time in any of the big hotels eg eye wateringly pricey drinks whereas other people say ist really cheap because you get all your drinks free if your playing. Are these just generalizations?

We are doing our research, believe me, but there's just so much (often contradictory) information out there that its hard to get a clear picture which is why this forum is proving so helpful. You can't beat talking with people who have been there and experienced it.

FYI - EDC is May 15th thru May 17th so that period will be very crowded and expensive. We accidentally overlapped it one trip and said never again, but we were older & quieter. Just not our thing :(
