Should I be concerned about losing a room key I have another one. Is there a chance someone gets the other one to try and get in my room?

I lost the other one walking on the strip

no room number on the card.... so I think it would be really hard for them to find the right door

If you did lose it on the strip, the odds of someone being able to find your room and use it are very small. However, if it still bothers you, just go down to the front desk (when the lines are short) and have them cancel out the old keys and make you new ones.

    There you go.

The key itself is pretty much worthless. There are lots of fake stories that it has your name, credit card and all that stuff on it floating around. People lose them daily and do just fine.

Now nostress, don't go pulling apart a perfectly good paranoia.

I've lost a few keys over the years. Never had a problem come of it. If you have another, you're good. Or as above, just get a new one.

It's no big deal. If it bothers you, you can just get new keys whenever you go to the front desk, if only for your peace of mind.

Actually, if you rub the magnetic strip from the card against the boarding pass, that information will transfer. And, if you then leave the card with 16 inches of Alexa, it gets uploaded so Jeff Bezos knows where you are.

Then you can use your room key as a boarding pass.

I find those to be the most trustworthy of all women. It's the ones that I am seeing that get me in all sorts of trouble. :stir::poke:

Never happened to me. But if it did, I'd 100% have the old keys cancelled and replaced at the front desk.

Sure, you might be staying at a huge hotel like the Venetian or the MGM Grand with thousands of possible rooms... but do you really think it's that difficult for the kind of person you're worried about to figure out what room is yours, if they saw you drop it or forget it on the bar or something?

Never mind simply waiting in the lobby for you to return, following you to your room to get the number, and then having at it when you return.... all it takes to waste less time is catching you off-guard and striking up a friendly conversation with you to the effect of...

"This is a nice hotel isn't it?"

"I'm in the ____ tower, which one are you in?"

"Oh, you too? I'm on the 30th floor. What a view! You enjoying your view?"

Even if you provide a vague answer like "I'm a little lower than that, but still a decent view", that's still enough to give them an idea of the range of floors. From that, it's likely you're not on a low floor (since you'd probably have said "Nah, I'm waaaay at the bottom" if you were). You're also probably not on the 28th or 29th floors, because you'll likely have made a "floor neighbour" remark based on that. Based on that, it plausibly narrows things down to probably the 10th to 27th floors. Now they only have several hundred doors to try, as opposed to the whole resort.

Then, if they've gotten you that far... it will probably take nothing to say "What's up for today?" to get an idea of your plans. Even with a vague answer like "Just out gambling, then going to see a show", you'll have told them how long they have to try the key on different doors before you'll return and be any the wiser.

Paranoid? Absolutely. But I've learned a lot about how social engineering works, and this is exactly how it's done.

Then, if you think your room safe is going to keep your valuables protected... all they have to do is call down to security and say they forgot the combination. Sure, sometimes they'll ask for ID... but this isn't always the case by my experience. Plus, they can engage in other forms of trickery to convince security that it's actually their room. Perhaps wait outside of the room for security and let them in using the key card, giving the impression you have authorized access (and you didn't simply find the room unlocked).

Or if they do ask for ID, they might have a fake ID and a story about how you're the registered guest's buddy staying in the room who is at a conference for the day. Won't be terribly difficult for them to call you by name once they're in your room. All they have to do is look on the TV, which may display your name... or look around for some other thing in your room that has your name on it, like a player's card or your luggage tag. So then they can confidently say "Yeah, I'm Joe Anderson's co-worker... we're staying here together".

In a city like Vegas, where tourists will often have thousands of dollars in cash and/or electronics, you only need to pull off one of these heists every two or so months to make an okay living... and as you can see, it doesn't take much to do.

So if you ask me, you're far more vulnerable than you might think by losing an "anonymous" hotel key. You don't know what the finder saw or found out about you before you realized you lost the key. Given that it's relatively little effort to replace the key upon noticing it's gone... there isn't much of an excuse to not do so.

Yeah, the following you to your room is definitely an easy to execute possibility if they saw you drop the keys. Getting the safe opened by security is less of a chance, but not impossible. I have had the safe accidentally locked twice. Once when it was locked by the previous tenant of the room. They asked me for my ID. A second time was many years when I had a buddy in the room who wanted the safe opened. CET asked him for ID and did not open the safe. Then, they called me to verify that I was ok with having the buddy in the room and said that they could only open the safe after I came back and presented ID. It would be a serious breach by security if they opened the safe without an ID matching the name on the room.

I once had a buddy who was robbed simply because his door didn't close all the way when he walked out of the room. His door was near the elevator. Someone walked into his room and walked out with some of his cash (about $500 which was not in the safe) and his laptop. Security caught them on camera and gave a description to the police but nothing came of it.

I have a habit of holding down the door handle and "bodychecking" the door of any locked door I leave to ensure it's actually locked... and this is exactly why.

Sorry to hear this happened to your buddy. Good thing they at least had an image of the perpetrator. It's likely he'll come back soon enough and try the same thing, so at the very least it may have contributed to him getting caught at some point.

Well, this was years ago and he filed a police case, but nothing came of it. So I assume the perpetrator was never caught. Casino security said that the thief was an 'attractive woman who was most likely not a guest at the hotel, just walking through' .

But yeah, after this incident, i have started double checking my door as soon as I close it as well.
