Guess it must be the sobriquet. The OP’s comment “ I've never cared for the term "Sin City” and following posts sound like a normal VMB conversation, or maybe I missed the torqued part.

I'd equate the two main traits with Vegas more than I would "sin".

    Bad / Dumb Decisions:

Typically "bad decisions" are not a factor when people vacation, but Vegas is one of the exceptions (Tijuana, perhaps New Orleans would be equivalent examples). Folks on average will drink more in Vegas than at home or on a typical vacation. Tourists will also get rolled by a hooker / pimp combo far more often in Vegas than on a typical vacation. Weed isn't the brightest decision either, and I'll just leave it at that.

Most gamblers make dumb decisions, primarily gambling itself, but also poor mathematical decisions just to get "action". Drinking or gambling past the point of good judgement. Locals aren't immune. If your community is among the per-capita leaders in Payday Loan / Pawn Shops and Bail Bondsmen, an above average portion of the population are also making bad decisions. Moving to Vegas without enough money / a solid job. Pissing away your money gambling while living in Vegas. Drugs / alcohol. Happens everywhere. Happens more so in Vegas than most places. 24/7 availability is one of the primary culprits. The second trait below doesn't help.

Something for Nothing / Scamming Others

Near universal in Vegas. Corporations screwing over customers with substantial resort, bar, restaurant, energy, etc. fees, ever decreasing gambling odds. Not satisfied with just screwing over their customers, senior casino management (CET and Stations) also screwed over their investors/bond holders with cumulative shady deals benefiting top management at the expense of share/bond holders.

Casino patrons think they are bright and pulling one over for all of their "great comps". Child please, stop deluding yourself. You are paying for your comps several fold and the only person you are pulling one over is yourself.

Locals have difficulty finding ethical (mechanics, construction) and/or competent professionals (doctors, dentists). Who wants a drunken degenerate gambler giving you bypass surgery? Las Vegas is a tough place to live, with below average educational opportunities / universities, unless you plan to study the gaming / hospitality industries. Vegas previously allowed persons with a high school education to secure wages at a higher than average rate. These opportunities are dwindling, either due to technology and/or downsizing (99% of income should accrue to the CEO, we are told, even if they bankrupt the company and "growth" is limited (or at times below) inflation and increased debt). There is a reason MGM will sell everything including their mother, even on terms Cash on Delivery (thank you Oliver Stone / Wall Street reference). Phil Ruffin = Winning.

Bad traits, the hallmark of human existence. Viva Las Vegas, amplified here more so than elsewhere, like the decibels at the Club or The D first floor or the drunk, broke arguing couple in the adjacent room with the adjoining "convenient" connecting room doors!

It is if you are gambling. Drinking reduces your risk tolerance which increases your desire / want to gamble and lose more. Weed makes you want to eat and chill. Casinos encourage one vice and ban the other.

What happened in Vegas used to stay in Vegas until social media happened... :(

But, thankfully most joints banned cell phone usage. In fact, at the Wynn, you can't have your phone out when others are bathing sans upper garments.

I don't even know what "sobriquet" means, so I just rolled with it. We didn't use such high falutin language at Chico State while stacking beer kegs in a pyramid.

Putting aside any tongue in cheek joking about the number of sins we could ring up in this list, sin city is an option, not an instruction.

It is an area where many of the sins and vices of modern life are more readily available and more tolerated than they are "back home". And further, rather a lot of the economic engine that drives it is build either directly around those sins, or indirectly around the uninhibited reputation it provides. It does not mean that that is all there is.

But saying you don't like the name based on one of its most standout features seems a little like the old "McGregor the Bridge Builder" joke.

And to add, the "more easy to justify enjoying extravagance" part! Most of us comp sycophants are very aware we spend more than when we first went to Vegas and paid for rooms.

When I paid for rooms, I could never justify nicer rooms, because you had to add food, resort fees and play onto it. I felt nickle and dimed for a so-so, still expensive experience. Upfront comps (I NEVER bank on backend) let me "justify" spending more than I did previously, but have much better rooms, much better food and much more play.

When you added in the ever-rising resort fees, late checkout fees and over-priced food to my "Pay-out-of-pocket" earlier trips in lesser rooms at Monte Carlo, my comp trips are more expensive, but usually not as much as you'd think, and for a drastically better experience. Where comps have cost us isn't so much per trip, but in justifying more trips, now THAT'S our rub.

So for me, yep, "Sin City" does kind of apply, as I live more extravagantly and decadently than I do any other time of the year.

So I'm OK with "Sin City" for me, but I do agree, there are also lots of very good things, and lots of very good people in the city as well.

As with anyplace, it's what we make of it. You can find acts of kindness in Sin City, or bad acts in Pollyanna-land!

I went 34 years without sinning until that fateful first trip in 1997 - so, yeah, Sin City fits perfectly!

Since I can't do it in my everyday life, Vegas is where I let my inner-demons run free. Every trip my goal is to check off 5 of the 7 deadly sins (no wrath or envy) and I love it. Haha very appropriate for me.

When I play a machine, get up, and somebody sits down and gets a bonus or jackpot immediately, there are both envy and wrath, trust me! :)

I heard @FormallyTD thinks all booze, girls, gluttony, gambling, smoking, dive bars and any extravagance gives Vegas a bad name, and he wants them all gone....

Though he did say it's still OK to cut up giant amounts of fruit and keep them in gallon bags in your mini fridge, and to arrange the layers of fruit by color. :poke::whistle::poke:

That picture made me laugh. The prune faced babes are the perfect advertisement for drinking.
