The Best Piece Of Advice

an old saying but my savior though out my life.

 

This is a more Vegas specific one but it's been good to me

'If you think you can walk somewhere, you cant'

 

Drill Sergeant, Fort Knox, KY: “You better git yo head outta yo ass, young man....”

Me: “Yes, Drill Sergeant....”

 

Do not email your superiors when you are angry. Sleep on it. - This saved my job years ago.

If you have a complaint be ready with an improvement.

 

Take care of your pennies, and your dollars will take care of themselves.

Can’t say I always adhere to this, but I try to more often than not. The guy who gave me this advice sets a hell of an example every day.

 

Set your own standards.

My wife and I live by this.

 

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.

Unfortunately, on occasion, I forget to adhere to this one!

 

when i first got into cooking i was told to remember the 6 P's

proper preparation prevents piss poor performance.

though if you think about that, it applies to many situations in life

 

Just saw this in today's paper A family talked about how they did their best to "control" crazy spending by family members. The limit was 4 gifts for each child and the standard was

a gift you want
a gift you need
a gift to wear
a gift to read.

 

God gave you TWO ears and only ONE mouth for a reason.

Use them proportionally and listen more than you talk....

 

My dad told me after my first time going to Vegas as an adult in 1974, first thing when you hit Vegas is fill you gas tank up and put a $20 bill in your glove box. I did that for years.

 

Set a daily budge and play only what you can afford to lose. Don't remember who gave me that advise but I have seen what happens to those who haven't learned or followed that sage information.

 

Let your friends underestimate you but your enemy's overestimate you.

 

After many iterations of good advice, I made a motto for myself and I told it to my manager at work and my staff.

"Never promise anything you can't deliver and Always deliver what you promise."
I think it works well in most situations in life that involves with dealing with others. When I wasn't sure I could complete something requested of me I would say "I can't promise you but I'll do my best."
