Good point... I happened to overhear a fella arguing his birth certificate issued by the hospital he was born at in the 40’s somewhere in rural northern Idaho should suffice.

He was NOT winning the argument and man... he was NOT happy! He departed with Security and absent his new ID.

Agree 100%, as I found out when I tried to get TSA pre-check.

When I moved to Florida 3 yrs ago, I got a Florida drivers license --- I think its a Real ID even though I don't remember going through any hoopla to get it... My license has a gold star in the upper right corner and I think that means its a Real ID --- at least I hope it does.

I just went yesterday to get mine as my license expires early next month. No appointment, just showed up and took a number. The Tennessee version has a list of what is approved and how many different documents you need on their website. I made sure I had more than enough documents, but still surprised the clerk when my pay stub had my full social security number on it as most people bring in one that is truncated. I think I used a state issued copy of my birth certificate, pay stub (which counted as proof of SS# and residency), copy of electric bill, and of course, my current driver's license. But I had last year's tax return, home insurance policy, and a bank statement that I didn't have to use.

I was in and out in about 20 minutes, with most of it filling out the form.

Me! So aggravating! And...it was at a DL Service Center thingy, which is supposed to be faster than a regular DMV as they ONLY deal in DL! I loathe the Bay Area!!

This is why people shouldn't wait to do it.

The closer the deadline gets, the bigger the snowball effect will be of people showing up without the right docs.

It was pretty seamless here in Nevada. I brought my old NY (non-RealID) license (which is not worth the material it's printed on, given that I haven't driven a car in a couple decades), my passport, and a couple utility/rent bills. I was in and out in about 15 minutes.

As far as the distinction, not only is a passport folio/card a federal ID, but it requires a lot more background to get than a driver's license. Driver's license is really just proof of residence and that you know how to drive a car (there are actually some states that prohibit companies from using a driver's license as a form of actual ID), whereas a passport card includes proof of citizenship or legal residency.

Glad you had a good experience. I had it even easier. I went to the Florida HSMV dept to transfer title to a boat I was selling. I had brought my passport just in case because my DL wasn't real ID compliant yet. Toward the end of the transaction the clerk said "oh I see your DL expires soon and you need to get real ID anyway. Would you like to do it now? I can use your passport and that title as verification. Ok. Eye test, paid some money, new picture taken, left with new DL and I didnt even plan on getting one that day.

And so on that latter point should it not then suffice as proof of identity to get something that as far as identification goes is not as sanctioned? No one will be getting on an international flight using a Real ID, for instance.

I asked this same question when I got mine. The clerk's response was that you needed this procedure to register your Real ID.

    Bureaucratese for I Don't Know.

There is no requirement to get a Real ID-compliant state ID; folks can still drive on regular DLs. But in less than a year -- unless there is another delay -- that DL won't get him on a domestic flight or let him access secure federal buildings and bases.

I’m in Texas and was told by two different TSA agents I would need one by October 2020. My license is not due to 2022. I had to send in for my birth certificate- couldn’t find my old one. But it was a hospital one so I would need it anyways.

Luckily small town DMVs don’t have the ridiculous waits the big cities do.

You're lucky. There isn't one in NJ that has a short wait for anything.

I'm starting to come up against it
    Early February is expiration date
And I see the PROBLEM I will have in advance
    I have a Hospital Birth Certificate -
    Not STATE not Gov't !
I forget the outcome for that DMV thread ?
No where does DMV ( on line ) give info or can I find info on this " difference "
    .
    Need some personal experiences ?
    and
What was your final cost for this wonderful fun ?
( DMV seemed vague, here )
