Never brought my DSLR. Too cumbersome since I like to pack light. I’ve brought my G7X Mark II but it hardly got used. I mostly stick to iPhone photos. One of these days, I’ll bring the DSLR and do a ton of street photography.

This March was the first Vegas trip that I didn't bring the "big" camera.
    I didn't miss it!
I also have the battery door issue. (Replaced once already.)

I did find that video taking and keeping camera on stand-by on iphones reallllly eats through battery life.
I wasn't lugging around the heavy/big camera, but I was still carrying a phone, a charging cord and a battery bank.

My phone only has 13 mp while my camera is 16mp and has better focus and zoom features so camera goes on any trip.

I had iPhone photos published with one of my recent LA Times articles and more are coming in the spring. Newsprint ain't a glossy, I know, but I was paid and my "camera" fit in my back pocket and I can easily take it biking or hiking, kayaking or just beer slurping.

You can't beat having a good camera phone for shooting photos on the fly. I brought my 360 cameras with me on my Halloween trip to Vegas thinking that I'd be shooting more 360 photos/videos, but I found myself shooting most of my photos/videos on an iPhone X. When you have to deal with big crowds of people everywhere (indoors and out) and need to travel light, sometimes a camera phone is the most convenient.

And just to clarify -- as I pointed out earlier on -- I'm not anti-DSLR. I have a prosumer Canon and good glass. I just tend to take photos more for remembrance and social media than 4'x4' glossies on the living room wall. If I get a gig with a photo assignment attached and it's that type of publication, I'll take it.

Used to bring a little 16 mp Power Shot A4000 but not since the S8

Hell in the old days I'd bring a camera bag. With a Sony Hi 8 and Power shot s70.

Disclaimer: I have no fiduciary interests in this product or any vendors from which it's sold.

I thought of posting this in another thread, one on discreet photos in casinos, but I can't find it, so I'll post it here. :)

Here's something that those of you who want to take discreet photos in casinos might want to look in to ...

Last month at Photo Plus (a large photo trade show), one of the products that the Canon booth was hawking was their new (as in brand new for the show, not in many of the dealers yet) Ivy Rec "sports" camera.

This was intended to be a smaller and more convenient alternative to things like the Go Pro, as well as a very simple take-everywhere camera aimed at the younger generations.

However, I and some of the others gathered around the booth were quizzing him on the practicality of using it as a discreet and nonobvious "street" camera. He said that they never even mentioned it in their meeting about it, but it had a lens of f/2.2 and a max ISO of 3200, so, although it was not intended as a "low light" camera, it should work in many street and candid situations.

I said "WTF" and picked up one, if only to play with.

One thing I did think about was the recurring threads here and on other LV media regarding taking photos in casinos, and I immediately thought that it would be far less obvious than pulling out a phone, holding it at arms length, and attempting to take a photo with a device having all the ergonomics of a piece of buttered toast. :)

It can work stand-alone, or, with a mobile phone app (which I admit I do not have the hang of yet) where you can compose and shoot from the phone. Yeah, as in a candid subject thinking you're just texting on yer fone as opposed to composing a photo of them! :) :) :) :) (Throw soft stones, please.) It comes in colors, with only one being non-bright, which was the one I picked.

Anyway, I have not tried it in a casino (yet) but I'm sure it would work just fine and be very nonobvious.

You can carry it in your hand, clip it on about anything, or wear it around your neck, as folks at the show were, using a spare lanyard like they use for conference badges.

Below is a shot of mine and two example shots as I was just futzing around playing with the phone app.

A review of the Ivy Rec is on line here:

I have no connections to Insta360 either, but they came out with a cool little action camera a few months ago called the Insta360 GO. It is more or less targeted for social media, since it's designed to take short 30-60sec videos clips and photos. I don't own one, but I can see where this can easily be used to discreetly shoot short videos inside casinos too. It's tiny, only weights 20g, and with the magnetic pendant that can hold the camera, you easily wear it around your neck while you're walking around. I own 2 of Insta360's 360/180VR cameras, so I was surprised when they came out with the GO. LOL

The Ivy Rec can do video too. I have not tried it for video yet.

With my Vegas ones? Not much at all. That's the main reason I quit taking my DSLR along with me. When I go to Disney I want it because I love shooting the architecture. I use my camera more around home. I had one small insert published in a calendar this year for Wisconsin Bankers Assn calendar and the bank where I work decided to try to provide our own local pics for our calendar this year that we give out (ended up having to use a couple stock photos in it). I actually have two of the months with my photos. When we got the proof I was actually going 'hey, those are mine & they look dang good!' when I looked at it.

I currently am planning on taking my mirrorless with me but more than likely will only take one lens. I have the iPhone 11 pro max and I am curious how it will do in Vegas but I don't want to not have a real camera with me

I backed out of bringing my camera this past trip, despite best intentions. My itinerary was packed with meet ups and didn’t think I’d have time to sneak away for a photo day. Used my iPhone for the requisite VP p0rn and food pics.

@SMG I would love to see samples from your 360 camera! Been wanting an Insta 360...but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.

You may want to wait a bit longer, since I heard that Insta360 is coming out with a new model targeted sometime in December. Rumor is that it's suppose to be better than the GoPro Max 360 which was recently released this past month.

If you check out my recent trip report , I took a few 360 photos of my room at the Orleans and Luxor. I'm using Panoraven as my photo host, since you can't just post 360 photos like regular photos in a forum like VMB, since it doesn't support that format. In order to post them on my blog, I have to add some additional HTML code to imbed Panaraven's 360 viewer along with the photos which works pretty well.

What's nice about 360 is what you can do with the photos/videos in post production, since you can create some cool free capture 2D videos, "tiny planet" photos, as well as screen shots from any camera angle using the original 360 videos/photos. I also have more photos/videos taken with the Insta360 One X in another blog post when I visited Moraine Hills State Park earlier this year. One thing to keep in mind is that a 360 camera isn't going to replace a good DSLR, since 360 works best when there is a lot of good content surrounding you, so you can capture everything.
