Recently returned from a Las Vegas stay with El Cortez room offer. At check-in, they kindly upgraded us from Tower to Tower Premium room. After one night, though, we asked to downgrade to Tower room, as my wife was uncomfortable with the open bathroom concept featuring frosted glass vs solid door, and completely open at the top. Front desk gladly moved us, but noted that all Tower rooms are slated for eventual remodel to Tower Premium with open bathrooms. Are we the only couple that feels a little awkward about this? Tower Premium room was quite nice otherwise.

I, for one, do not understand why this was a problem?

Are you talking about a separate “toilet room” with frosted glass, or the whole bathroom?

Aria has frosted glass doors for the toilet rooms, and I agree that it’s awkward, but only when someone else is using the sinks or shower at the same time. Couple or not, some things just aren’t for public viewing.

As long as there’s a separate toilet room with a solid door, I’m good with the bathroom being exposed to the room, but can see how it might be awkward if you’re not traveling solo or with a SO.

You should see the bathrooms in hotels in Asia. There's a window in them!!!

I grew up in a house with 1 bathroom and between 5 and 7 people living in it and up to a dozen if we had family over. I truly do not care.

I wonder what the original poster would have thought about the rooms at the Riverside Casino and Resort in Iowa. The bedroom area looks through a glass wall into the shower, and then the sink area, and then the toilet. There is a drape that can be closed across the shower wall, but definitely makes for a GREAT view when the SO is showering! IMG_20141105_144355_737.jpg

Given the number of complaints about our opaque toilet doors, we have decided to switch to the Fort Leonard Wood Model, which is exceptionally popular with our new arrivals. Many of which have commented that the impression was such that they would never, to their dying day, forget it.

MGM west wing. I got one of these rooms once and made them move me. Not that the open bathroom was a problem, I was solo. But the room was just nasty. When you walk into the room from the corridor you are in the bathroom. Once past the bathroom, you are in the bedroom. No door there either.

Way too many hotels are doing this. When we went to Cancun last year, I was amazed how many hotels I had to rule out due to open bathrooms - or windows, etc.

I need a door, even after 30+ years of marriage.

It does not bother me, but I can see why it would bother others.

@vegas30326 I wish I had taken photos, but was so anxious to get out and start enjoying Fremont Street that I didn't think about it. So the toilet and shower area was separated by the frosted glass door that went about 6 ft up, then nothing to ceiling. Then the sink / vanity area set right next to that, but with no door whatsoever. So a person lying normally on the bed would not only hear everything, but see an outline of everything in the toilet area through the frosted glass. It bothered my wife more than me, as I can accommodate pretty much any circumstance for the privilege of visiting Vegas, but even I have to admit the lack of privacy felt awkward. Here's a frame borrowed from someone else's video where you can kind of see what I mean. That first doorway to the bathroom has no door at all, with the sink immediately to the right. Then the door with frosted glass panels closes parallel to the bed for the toilet and shower area. So imagine the room lights off, frosted door shut facing the person lying in bed, with shower / toilet activities completely backlit by the bathroom light. Not much is left to the imagination (sight or sound).

@michaeld21 That’s an incredibly awkward design... They may as well just put the toilet in front of that window and tear out the curtains for good measure.

Also, those of us with pets understand, you can't close the door. I hear small children it's pretty much the same too.

I mean, I can respect I might have hang ups other people have. But....

Fort Knox, Kentucky was like this also. All recruits awaiting processing into the basic training companies are initially housed here until assignment.

And yes, you will never forget the experience.

The worst is the darling hotel in Sydney. The toilet has a door but the shower is right next to bed and only thing separating the two is the sink and mirror. One you come out of the shower to dry yourself and get dressed, you’ll have an audience. There’s no way around it.
poor design for a 5 star hotel.

I've stayed in the El Cortez upgraded rooms, I thought it was a big improvement, the shower was kind of interesting, but lets be clear, there is still a bathroom door, the shower is not out in the open.(at least in the one I saw)

There's a rest stop in Maryland where the men's room stall doors only go up half way. Supposedly, it's to discourage drug use (I guess the women don't use drugs there, as they had full size doors), but it's probably better to use the woods behind the building for more privacy.
