My wife and I have been staying downtown more the last few years. We have stayed at the GN, D, and DG. I am currently planning a trip for January 1-7, 2020 with our son who just turned 21. We are going to split the trip between the strip and downtown. I have been looking at 4Q and Plaza for choices downtown on this trip. Any recommendations. Also what is best site to get best rates at either one of these. We will get two rooms, one for wife and I and one for our son.

    Thx

I am, by no means a downtown connoisseur, but I can tell you that 4 Queens doesn't charge a resort fee and the Plaza has presently renovated a lot of rooms. Both of those are pluses in my book.

As to where to book, I always go with booking with the hotel directly so I can rebook if the rate goes down.

I always go with the Hotwire Hot Rate deals where they reveal the hotel after you purchase. I did a quick check for Jan 1-7 and The Plaza is $530 for 2 rooms (hotel picks bed type) before the resort fees (paid at the hotel). A general rule for the hot rates is to match the tripadvisor review totals (notice the 6,569) with the regularpriced hotels and you can determine which hotel you're getting, it works 100% of the time. This is only an example.

It all depends on what you are looking for of course, but if a budget is in mind, those would be fine hotels in which I have
    at some point stayed myself.

I started out twenty eight years ago, and always book with the hotels themselves, so that any play can be evaluated at the end of your stay.

Even low rollers can get some or all of the resort fees taken off, or a night or two off ect.

Those downtown properties will also send out mailer offers for a free nights, food credit, or freeplay, even with low rolling players.

Good luck wherever you stay and hope you have a great time!

You might consider the Derby Suite at the Plaza. It is very large and has two bedrooms each with their own bath. One bedroom has two beds and the "master" bedroom has a ensuite with separate shower and jacuzzi tub. Also, the master is much larger and has a walk in closet, a lounger and table and chairs. Both rooms are off the foyer and connect to the living room that has two giant sofas, desk and chair, 55 inch TV, wet bar with fridge, ice maker and I believe coffee maker. There is also a huge dining room table with,I believe 6 chairs, and a 1/2 bath. It's def not Wynn quality, but the views are terrific and it would fit the 3 of you very well with lots of room and privacy. For that particular suite - you will need to call the Plaza to book it.

I've stayed in it multiple times and the thing I like the best...you can get that whole suite down to sub zero temperatures!! I love a cold room after gambling my little heart out :D

Check those resort fees closely before booking. Some are higher than daily rate quote. For the first time in many many years I needed to purchase 3 nights in December due to a lack of comps. Ended up at Main St Station with sapphire discount. CES starts 1/7/2020, it may be crowded 5th and 6th.

Which dates are you thinking of for downtown as opposed to the strip? I did a quick look for some of the downtown properties assuming 6 night stay starting on 1/1 based on the casino websites. Following prices include resort fee and tax for one room without players card discount:

Plaza - $472 using the pdirect discount
    Main St - $474
4 Queens - $524 for north tower. $659 for south tower
    DG - $601

Plaza looks good. 1/5 rates are good ... they jump on 1/6. I used to stay at Main Street before they changed up their players club. Nice room in my opinion and I liked that it was a bit away from fremont st but.

Since my motto is :" It never hurts to ask" I would contact Gary Vickery at the Plaza and see if there is anything he can do for you about room rates, including the Derby Suite. Tee has a very good suggestion on that.

To what he said, I'll add to that. I usually start with Kayak to give me a good understanding on what I can expect from a cost standpoint for a particular weekend. I do this across multiple tabs in Chrome, but I have Kayak search open, I run hotels through Hotwire, Priceline Express, Trivago, and oddly enough SnapTravel has been giving me some really good deals. I look at them all and narrow down where we want to stay. Usually, California/MSS/Plaza/D/Fremont/4Q in that order. After all this I look and see if any of the pricing for the named hotels come with cancellation so I can rebook if a better price comes along. A really good feature of Agoda is they don't charge you until a week out but it still secures your reservation. I should also mention I'm not much on the gambling side so I don't put in enough per trip to justify booking direct with the hotel but if you do gamble this would be a better route. But I LOVE what Gabriel suggested on figuring out the Hotwire hotels, never dawned on me.

I just called Plaza, they don't rent out the Derby Suites, those are reserved for VIP's. Also I've sent 2 emails to Gary as recommended and received no response regarding a May stay.

That's interesting. I was under the impression those were "up for grabs," but the PH Suites and New Luxe Suites were for VIPs. I'm a VIP there, so I guess I misunderstood the info I was given. Thanks for checking on that @BlackJackLady, I will stop recommending it. It's not terribly nice, so I'm little perplexed why it's "saved" for VIP. There are much nicer digs there for us Aces! Gary is actually in charge of FD and I'm not sure of his days off. You can always try contacting one of the hosts here: https://www.plazahotelcasino.com/casino/casino-services/ I know that they are short-handed at the moment, so keep that in mind. Luckily May is still a long ways away...

Since it appears you are not having any luck with the Plaza and what you need, what about looking into the Downtown Grand?

I think they may have 2 bedroom suites, but I am not sure. I do know they have some nice room rates and others on here, have mentioned their rooms are really nice.

Might be worth looking into the DG. :)
