I usually see a bunch of VP game options. I was wondering if any of you pro's can suggest a good one for beginners? I usually play some Deuces Wild on the casino apps but don't know if this is logical on an actual VP machine. I'm not very familiar with the gambling jargon so I kindly request any VP for dummies like advice :wiggle:

Refer all your questions to the master @tringlomane.

    That’s how I got started.

Jacks or Better or (single) Bonus Poker are probably the easiest to learn basic strategy, which is well-documented.

JoB/Bonus Poker would be the easiest, no doubt. One really nice thing is that the strategy for both is very similar, so you can play both variants passably. Personally, I don't find deuces to be terribly hard, but I play NSUD only. Appropriate play on deuces can vary with the paytables.

Other games that pay seven on the flush can be pretty tricky to get right. And Joker Poker has a reputation as difficult.

In addition to tring, I'd go read some introductory stuff at wizard of odds, and consider if a video poker for beginners book by someone like Bob Dancer would be useful for you to read.

Bonus. Probably one of the better paytable bartop options.
You can get basic stranger chart from wizard of odds website to practice with.

Not a hard strategy to learn. And less ups and downs.

I read Bob Dancer's book, and then did a pay site, videopoker.com, to learn basic strategy for each game. The Gold membership, $10 a month, gives you the option to play in learning mode, which will highlight your mistakes every hand and keep track of your progress. GREAT way to find the holes in your game. You can cancel your subscription any time. I always sign up for the gold membership a month or so before each trip, to tighten up my play. There are also several free sites, but none that correct your mistakes (that i am aware of).
Lots of good info on this site as well. For instance, I recently learned that the only way to get offers and comps at the 4 Queens is to play at 50 cents or higher. Never knew that, had always wondered why I never recieved any offers although I always stayed there and played plenty of quarter VP.

WinPoker for iOS is worth the $10 investment.

Happy to play next to you if we meet next week at the meet up.

I suggest you practice on this site
    https://wizardofodds.com/play/video-poker/multi-hand/
There are various games you can play the very first is Jacks or Better. You can play from 3 to 100 hands. Make sure that you click Warn on Strategy Errors above the hands which will give you warnings if you deviate from their best play. There is more games that will give you a section of games. You can play from3 to The easiest is to start with JOB(Jacks or Better) or BP (Bonus Poker). Also after the hand is dealt there is an Analyze button to help with what they think is he best play for that hand if you are undecided. After a while it will teach how to play many games and you can decide which you like best.

That must have been a glitch because I play quarters and have been getting offers for at least the past 10 years. Maybe they didn't have your correct address?

Fortunately I have taught a lot of people well, because there was a lot of good advice here and I was too busy to respond. Lol

I definitely would learn Jacks or Better strategy. And usually use that strategy to play Bonus Poker unless JoB is 9/6 for the one coin full house/flush. Deuces translates badly to non-wild games.

I'll be taking my first crack at VP on this trip too @GabrielBFly . I've been leveraging the wizardofodds game recommended by @oghuman to practice JoB/Bonus. Using vpfree2.com to scout pay tables and learn to read them. Haven't used my 'in case of emergency break @tringlomane glass' action yet!

Best thing I ever did was learn VP! I really enjoy it as you feel you have some modicum of influence on the outcome due to learning best plays etc. vs. other 100% chance based games.

I use an online trainer, where you can view your accuracy and also check that you are selecting best places along with the % of each combination. It helped me learn! If you would like the link let me know :)

    Best of luck!

I am totally going to take advantage of the info in this thread. I have been wanting to try out VP. I have played it in the past but I never bothered to learn strategy before.

Another vote for Bonus Poker. Not a hard strategy to learn, and in general I find it has the best paytables at quarters for most places, unless you're playing downtown/offstrip at casinos that have 9/6 JOB at quarters. I think it's a bit more "exciting" than JOB, with the bonus payouts for quads, but doesn't have the crazy volatility of Deuces, DDB, etc...

I bought the laminated Bob Dancer strategy card and keep it in my pocket just in case I get a situation that I'm not sure of, or if I'm too drunk... Gets a ton of use for $6.95. https://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/shop/product-category/games/strategy-cards/

There are also printable strategy cards you can find online.

I have to say one thing to a beginner, don't play too fast. Most of my errors occur when I play too fast. I either misread the dealt cards or I don't hit the draw button flush. Also, sometimes the buttons themselves do not work properly. If you find a button does work properly, hit the the slot attendant to work on it.

Or go to another machine. If you play VP at a fast rate do NOT use a machine with sticky buttons, excessive light glair on the screen, uncomfortable body positioning, etc. Set yourself up for the best possible chance to minimize any mistakes.

My first step with to try to get it fixed. After all, if someone leaves the machine and doesn't call for repair, it certainly doesn't help the next person who sits there.

Yeah i need to do this more often myself. If no one informs them, it will definitely remain unfixed.
