How do you feel about playing beside a bigger player?

Should be fine as long as you never bet against them

 

In a past life I worked graveyard shift at a casino in the pit, checking credit lines of these types of people. Not great professionally, but very interesting for observing humanity. One player in particular had a very large credit line, bet about $5-10k per hand, and was frankly terrible at blackjack. In the course of 2 nights, he asked for a credit extension 3 times. The third time, we had to call up the CFO of the company and wake him in the middle of the night, and he denied the player another extension. I recall his total loss being something like $495,000 although that may have been his initial credit line. Anyways, back in the early 1990s that seemed like a lot of money. Nowadays it's probably not that far above average for an rfb player at the Wynn.

 

It doesn't bother me if they're cool and having fun. If they are bringing the table down by getting upset with their losses it's a bummer. I got to admit it though, I do get a little jealous of these older dudes sitting down the tables playing huge bets every hand with a much younger girlfriend/wife that is waaaaaaayyyyy out of their league hanging on their arm. Hopefully, I'll be that cool one day lol.

 

At the craps table, if you get a bettor in the purple/yellow chip range it causes the dealer to have to reposition chips in their hands for the payouts more and to slow down for calculations of payouts more which all in all slows the game down. I don't like a slow game. Often I will move to another table, or at least to the other side of the table, when a purple/yellow chip player moves onto the table.
Though, last trip, a $12K-15K bettor at the craps table tipped me $800 for my rolls...with no particularly good roll. Wonder what I've had gotten if I had a good roll?

 

It does not bother me at all.

 

I was at the 25 min craps table at caesars, and the guy across the table was doing some really wierd stuff before he rolled. Normally I would roll my eyes and make a few comments, but he was dropping 2k 12's and 5k hard ways hopping, I shut my mouth and marvelled at this mans ability to piss away money.

I have stood next to guys in Vegas playing a couple hundred a number on craps with 500-600 in odds behind the line while I bet the 6/8 for table minimum to start and maybe 2x times odds behind the line. I am not intimidated at all by standing next to guys who play big money. They can afford it, good for them. As someone else said, as long as the person is not a jerk, I don't care at all.

 

Bigger? Just like at the urinal...eyes forward, no conversation. I don't compare wangers or bankrolls.

 

I have very clear memory of sitting next to an older Asian lady who was sitting next to someone who I assumed was her daughter out on the main floor @ Aria. The elder Asian was quite a character as she had nothing but yellow chips in front of her spot alongside of a paper telling her how to play BS. She also had folded a piece of paper in the middle making like a tent that covered the top of her chips so that the floor could not see her stack. She only bet in even amounts like $2000 or $4000 etc. so that even when she got a BJ she still only had yellow chips under her "tent".

I said all of that to say that I loved sitting next to a player like that as I could sit next to her and play for hours as a cover for me without really being noticed like I usually am.

 

Yeah, that particular situation was that the 3 guys appeared to know each other, it would have been like a 4th tiny wheel setup, just not the right vibe.

If I wanna play and the whole table is basically playing together, if I join, I'll just bet with them because I don't use any strategy at bacc except occasionally letting a couple of winning hands in a row ride.

 

Big players don't bother me with their big bets. Once, Several years ago, I saw a big player get banned from my local riverboat. He had a history of being rude and obnoxious to the dealers and pit critters. The day he got 86'ed, I was on the same table as him when he started berating the dealer and the pit boss intervened. I was offered another comped night when the pit realized I was leaving the casino because of his actions (I did not make a stink at the table, just quietly colored up and left). Apparently, chasing off other players was a turning point. I was told the big player had been banned from all of the Indiana riverboats because of his behaviour.

As others have said, bad behaviour is not limited to big players. Most of the bad actors I have seen are a mixed bag of play levels. Most of the instances I have seen have been at BJ tables. Players pounding the table in anger, yelling and cussing loudly, knocking their chair over, stomping up and down the aisle, etc. One HL player even threw his chair at the CW serving the HL room.

 

No bother.

But I've seen dealers get freaked out At TI years ago a young couple came to the bj table, I was the only one playing. He pulled a big wad of money out of his jacket and slammed it on the table. Dealer started counting the bills and her hands were shaking, she was nervous as a cat. She finally counted the money it was over $5000. Anyhow the game finally started, his girlfriend was holding a teddy bear only in vegas. He played just about lost all and left the table closely followed by a host asked them where they were staying, etc.

Another at GN playing craps, lady came up got a marker $8000. My chips were at dealer ready to be counted but in the excitement of the $8000 marker the dealer just scooped my chips into the bank and gave her chips OK what about me Dealer had no idea so I called pit fellow over and he said how much did you have? I said it was $800, he said how about $600 I said let's do the $800 unless you want to look at the tape so got my $800 and left.

If a person is a what shall I say asshole then I have a problem but that can be a big player or little player. And dealers should be used to the action

 

My fondest memory of playing with a big bet player was at Mirage several years ago. He was betting $1k, $500, $200, $2k at different times in the 2 deck game. I bet $50/$100 per hand.
He was obnoxious yelling “that’s what I’m talking about “ ( a phrase I’ve hated since then).
It was strange to me that the amounts of his bets changed so often. Finally realized he was counting. With great happiness to me and the others at the table, he was asked to leave the casino!!!
I think counting is fine, but this guy was obnoxious and I was tickled at his removal

 

When I see someone blow though a lot of money real quick I always wonder what is their bankroll. I know I am not watching their only action. First time I was in Vegas almost 20 years ago I sit at crazy 4 card poker and bet $10 a spot. The other guy at the table is betting $200 to $300 a spot. I just kept thinking just give me one of your losing bets and I go home happy. I do like it when I play with people like that as long as they are cool.

I don't care as long as they're not being a jerk or a weirdo. First High Roller I ever sat at a table with was a massive a-hole to both me, the dealer, and pit boss, but he was betting $20,000 to $30,000 a hand so they let him get away with it.

One of the coolest and funniest guys I ever sat at a table with was betting $300-$800 a hand compared to my $25. He actually gave me his phone number and I called him a couple months later to try and half-ass schedule a "reunion" of sorts in Vegas, but it never came to fruition.

Recently I sat near a guy betting $500 a hand, which, fair enough, is a decent amount for almost anyone, but judging by his attitude you'd think he was betting $5,000 a hand.

Sat with plenty of other people betting 2x, 3x, 4x, or more of what I was betting, but they're usually just normal people like me that happen to have more discretionary income.

 

Doesn't bother me, I even ask what they wants me to do with my hand (even though I play perfect basic strategy) since they have more riding. Except the one time at MGM, a high roller, bought a bottle service at the BJ table was loud, obnoxious, gulping from his bottle, it even bothered the whole section. 15 minutes later he was so drunk, and lost it all.

Haha.... that second dealer that taps in has a look like he's seen everything that could possibly happen in Vegas, twice over, and just doesn't give a flip anymore....

 

This is exactly how I feel. I usually bet black chips, and would be much happier playing next to someone putting out flags being a decent person, tipping well, fun to talk to, etc., then next to someone playing red chips being a drunk jerk who's splitting 10s (yes, I know, it doesn't impact things from a mathematical perspective, but all things being equal I'd rather just be at a table which knows what they're doing) and yelling at the cocktail waitresses.
