So I am trying to decide between flying home with my wife to CMH on a direct Spirit red-eye or leaving around 2pm for a short 1 stopper on Delta. I've never taken a red-eye out of Vegas, and obviously don't like them normally. Seems like it could be extra brutal out of Vegas, especially on Spirit. We would save like 200 bucks on Spirit if we don't care about the seats.

What would you do and anyone think the red-eye isn't all that bad?

I have taken at least 7 of them out of Vegas. I do not mind them but many people seem to dislike them. For me in the summer it is easy to make that a pool day. Staying that much longer saves you 200 you said, for me I would easily spend 200 bucks by staying longer so that is kind of a wash in terms of saving money. But for me it is an easy way to make a quick 3 or 4 day trip seem a lot longer.

I dont mind the red eyes out of Vegas. I usually have a 4 hour flight. When I take the red eye I usually am asleep prior to taking off and sleep till we land. It usually works out great for me.

I'm a SW fanboy and fly them exclusively. Have not paid for a flight in years. Besides more nonstops from CLE, the only other thing I wish they had are red eyes - especially out of Vegas. I would be taking them in a heartbeat.

So I would take the red eye - especially since it is $200 cheaper. But on the other hand, it is Spirit. So theoretically, you are making 1 last big "bet" before you leave Vegas since I've heard horror stories about them and Frontier on cancellations, delays, etc.

I always take the red eye home. Gives me extra time in Vegas and I'll get 4 hours of sleep on the plane.

I prefer the afternoon because I am solo on my trips right now. But I have taken a red-eye with girlfriends and we just usually sleep all the way back. For the $200.00 dollars take the red-eye and try to get as cozy as you can on the way back.

It's not the best, but we're willing to do it to save hundreds of dollars...

I've done it. I could do it more easily were I younger. I am not a good sleeper on a plane, sitting up anyway. Even with an eye mask and earphones I can't sleep. I can doze for a few minutes but that's it. I arrive too dead and it takes too much recovery time for me. I don't even like arriving at midnight which I've done often. I now pay a bit more to get home in the evening so I can be slightly productive the first day back.

It really depends on how trashed you get on your trip and if you have the discipline to cease fire on the liquor and/or narcotics at the end of the trip.

    Otherwise, you're this guy/gal:

    Guy.jpg

Of course, the major problem with flying is that you have no control over what everybody else does/did....so you can do the right thing and then there are 150 other people snoring, drooling, passing gas, etc.

In general, I like the redeye. Cross country can be a little rough, but at least you're not all the way to the east.

    The best of luck.

It's something worth trying. It's a direct flight which is a big plus. If you're good at snoozing on the plane and have an easy drive home after landing, then why not?

I did it once from Vegas to Newark with a stop in Detroit. Won't do it again. I hardly caught a wink and landed at EWR just in time to deal with the NYC-area morning rush hour.

Not for me anymore. After years of business travel I still cannot catch a single wink of sleep in flight. Mid-day flights for us from now on when leaving the motherland.

Depends on when we get there. If we getters early on arrival we'll leave earlier departure day. And vice versa. We just avoid arriving late leaving early and vice versa.

I used to take them all the time before SWA was an option out of buffalo.
    Never again!
The $2-300 I "saved" on airfare was non existent.
You are either paying for an extra night and not fully utilizing it or end up "homeless " for 12 hrs.
Ended up spending more money on food, drink and last minute gaming than any flight savings.

Yeah this is also something to consider. We never get a room for the last day; we'll bell desk the luggage. Usually don't gamble hard that last night either.

I don't think I have any direct flights to my location via redeye but I have had some layovers that a near the worse experiences of my life. Do not drink much that day it does not help you sleep on the plane. I may someday do a redeye again but for now I have 2 little kids at home waiting to run me ragged after getting 1 hour of sleep on the plane and 4 hours a night in vegas.

I've done it in the past, hated it. I don't do it now unless it's my only choice. However, I cannot sleep on a plane even when I take something to help. I would prefer to get home at a reasonable time. I am usually in Vegas 5 to 7 nights though, so by the time that last day comes, I'm ready to head home and usually take a morning flight and get home at a decent hour.

Tried to answer the survey and I’d have to vote for mid morning non-stop.

I can’t do a red eye. After 5 nights the 10:00 am gets me into Boston in time to be back in Newburyport by 7:30 pm. Next morning I’m good to go on eastern time.

A red eye would wound me for a couple days

A lot of it depends on how good you are at sleeping on planes. If you can't do it, then take the one-stop with Delta, especially because Spirit is not exactly the most comfortable airline. I, personally, can sleep almost anywhere (my college professors will attest to this), and so never minded the red-eyes much.

Also, make sure you take into account the various Spirit fees. Even if the ticket itself is $200 cheaper on paper, that doesn't mean you'll be spending $200 less than you would on Delta.
