I am headed downtown for our annual Fantasy football draft at the end of August. Just had a friend get back from a trip and he said all $5 BJ tables required $1 side bet to play. Has anyone seen this as the norm or was this an isolated thing he ran into.

We have stayed at the D for the past 6 years and I am hoping this is not the case.

I am currently sitting in my room at Main Street Station and have been here since Tuesday. I have been playing $5 double deck at MSS, Cal, and Fremont, and have seen no such rule.

That is good to hear. I couldn't imagine that being wide spread but he was adamant it was everywhere.

    Four Queens has that thing.
They have a bunch of 6:5 BJ tables (no side bet required) and a few 3:2 tables with mandatory $1 side bet. Not fun at all.
Fortunately, you can easily find a better table next door in downtown. :)
Also saw that mandatory side bet tables on Strip but do not remember casino name.

$5 3:2 tables downtown without any mandatory side-bet:
    1. Plaza
    2. Cal
    3. MSS
    4. Golden Gate
    5. Fremont
    6. The D
    7. DTG
    8. El Cortez
...you won't have any trouble finding an open $5 3:2 table without that stupid rule! Basically, just avoid Binion's, Nugget & 4-Queens and you'll be fine.

Just curious, @topcard, what particular side bet(s) does Binions, 4Q, and Golden Nugget force on the player?

Just FYI, Fremont has $3 bj tables. No side bets. But I'm not sure if those tables are 6:5 or 3:2. Probably 6:5 but I don't play bj much (I play mostly craps) so cannot confirm.

Also, props to The Cal for having a non-smoking $5 DD game at all hours.

Mandatory side bet is like Checker’s requiring you to buy a supersize soft drink to go with your free sandwich. Or, in exchange for providing you with a game that has a low house edge we require you to make a bet with a ridiculous house edge. Why not just charge a ‘Table Fee’ for the use of the chair and chips? No, wait, delete that last idea from the Internet!

    @tringlomane
I don't think the Nugget requires a side bet, but nor do they offer a $5 game.
    Binion's has zero 3:2 tables.
4-Queens has a couple of multi-deck $5 3:2 tables with some sort-of side-bet... I don't know what it is, as I've never even paused long enough to take note... I admit I was shocked to even see a $5 3:2 table at 4-Queens, but requiring the side bet explains away that particular mystery.

...actually, now that I think about it, I haven't seen $5 blackjack at the D for some time either... lowest I noticed was $10 on my last several trips.

Side bet in 4Q is a right to spin a wheel when you hit a BlackJack for a "chance to win $XXXX". I saw the spin only once and the player won 3 or 5 extra dollars in addition to her BJ payout. I love 4Q for VP but they have the worst BJ downtown...

I can't believe that they can force you to make a side bet.

Is the mandatory side bet at Four Queens a weekend only thing or in effect weekdays as well? Thanks.

They don’t “force” you. It’s a consensual thing. If you sit down it’s the rule. Sit at 6/5 VP for JoB and they don’t “force” you. You choose it.
    Makes you think huh?

We just came back topcard and I played bj for a few hours last Tuesday and Wednesday at The D. Both times at $5 tables. I'm thinking I started playing around 4 or 5 but my timing could be way off...:woot:Time is just a figment of my imagination while in Vegas.

I can confirm that as others have said, they have no mandatory side bet there or at the Golden Gate. Both casinos pay 3:2 with DAS and good rules still.
