After my terrible trip this past April I have had no desire to gamble or even look at a casino. I had never in my life had such a loosing trip plus all the issues with the hotel and such and was shying away from wanting to return to a casino, let alone Vegas

THEN I got bored, read a few trip reports and started to feel the itch again. I have been looking at the boards but not in as much detail as in the past and well, I am back. Last week I made a trip to the local casino, lost a couple hundred and then today I went and turned $100 into $300. I know, not much to some, but considering my loosing streak that is a win and felt good. My new game plan going to the local casino is to just take $100 and if I double or come close, I may walk, but if its like today and I only lose five hands in 30 minutes, I will continue until I lose 2-3 in a row. Whatever I win from the casino, I plan to put into my vacation account and HOPE not to touch it. I am weak on willpower when it comes to spending.

I have went ahead and booked a room at Planet Hollywood for next easter but if I can get the funds and time off, I am going to try to get a trip before Christmas. I left my job working at the local casino when I got back from Vegas and started a new job, although a pay cut I am much happier and working more hours, way more hours and should be able to set aside money fairly easy.

Funny how one can go from betting $25-100 a hand not not feeling happy to win and then go and bet $10-15 and be thrilled to get paid. Guess it took losing a ton to open my eyes.

Very true on the big world. I have been considering a beach vacation as well but I have always been addicted to Vegas.

If the budget only allows one, it's decision time. We all face that, ultimately, in our travel planning.

    Um... you're welcome? :wink2:

Yeah, I've had some bad gambling trips and they soured my mood on top of some other issues. But I've learned how to walk away when I'm not having fun gambling. It can be difficult for some personalities to do that, but it really has helped me from letting the casino decide if I had a good trip or not.

Leaving a job you don’t care for and finding one with less pay but one that makes you happy is a winning move.
Setting limitations on spend and losses makes the wins that much sweeter when the pendulum swings back in your favor, as you proved playing at your local.

Best of luck on your next Vegas trip - my favorite place too!

In the end the house always wins. If we accept that thought, enjoying the positive mathematical moments when they come here and there, and remain in budget, the lows aren't quite as low. It's mental. It's all mental.

The multiple aspects of life lived well, comfortably, far outweigh any fleeting rush from gambling.

One thing about Vegas, if the gambling is kicking your butt, you can always go do something else. And many things are free.

Sometimes, all it takes is simply doing something else, people watch, hang by the pool, grab a coffee or whatever, and luck can be changed.

Working in a job that you like, is worth it 's weight in gold. :woohoo:

Vegas is for all budgets, so never feel bad or inferior if you can't dine at the high end steak house or play $100.00 hand black jack. And if you have to choose a hotel that is low to mid level, do not stress about it. Life is about changes, and sometimes the changes are for the good. :soapbox: I'll get off my soap box now.

My personal rules that I live by when I go to Vegas: I do not chase bonuses,:nono: I do not go over my daily gambling budget (okay, this takes some discipline, but it keeps me happy), and when I have a win of $10.00 or more above my initial investment in the slot machine (usually a $20.00), I cash out, put the win aside and put the $20.00 back in.;) You guessed it, my husband laughs at me, won't play next to me most times, but who usually comes out ahead, at least a little, ME. LOL :D There is even a little bank that you can purchase that you can put winnings in, and can't get at it, unless you literally pound it open. LOL Cost about 10.00 and fits in your pocket. Saw it on a Youtube channel, thought it was the coolest thing. :nworthy:

Thanks for the replies and support. Had a hard time not going to the casino tonight after work, but I am going to try to limit my time there

Call me a bummer blanket: If the casino pull is so hard and the economics of it all can be difficult, you just might want to consider talking to a professional about this. No one likes to hear that here and of course a cadre will scream it's none of my fucking business, but if it's not simply about fun and delivering enjoyment in and out of the casino, another pursuit might be in order.

Remember, when gambling stops being fun and it impacts your daily life and not in a good way, it may be time to consider other venue's for entertainment. Just some "food for thought".

I'm the poor one, here on this board, and I only play slots and some video poker (.05-.25,) when we go to Vegas. I do not go to our local Indian casino's here in the Phoenix area, because we love Vegas, and if I went to our local casino's, I would not have the funds to go to Vegas. Vegas is my Promised Land

I play anywhere from .30 -.90 cents, with the exception of the old Quick Hit machines, $1.50 bet (I have to have won a little before I play them). I have as much fun as anyone and when my gambling budget is gone, I do other stuff, mostly the free stuff. LOL My gambling budget, by the way is $100.00 a day, (okay, I know the laughter abounds, that's okay :) )

Maybe staying away from your local casino and just going to Vegas might be a better plan. Just a thought, and I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade.

You are the only one, that can decide what is best for you, and the people here, are really good about offering suggestions in a positive manner, when asked.

I don't believe there is a gambling problem. Vegas was not fun last trip because I was chasing the losses. Im at the point I am happy with the small wins, i just went to the local again today and walked away up $185 and felt like I won the lottery. I don't gamble outside my budget, I don't not pay bills to be able to gamble, I only use the fun money. Today I took $200 and only bought in for $100, and came home with $385 in my pocket.

I don't think there is one either. You know your boundaries. And I know how it feels like to just lose, lose, lose.

When the fun stops, then we stop. That's good! Hope your luck changes for the better. It looks like it already is on it's way there!

@K-9treatbaker - No laughter here! It's all relative... at $1 per bet, your budget covers 100 bets.
At $10/hand playing blackjack, my daily budget is $700 (or, at times a bit more) - only 70-to-100 such bets.
Of course, a blackjack hand is considerably slower than a slot-pull, but the concept is the same: How many "average" wagers can you net-lose with your daily bankroll.
Using that criteria, we're very close!

I think this should be a flag that gets your attention. It is one of the signs of a gambling disorder.

Also, you said you weren't going to the local casino, then you went. You justify it by saying you didn't lose as much as you brought, but again, these are signs of a disorder.

This info is from MayoClinic's website - https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/compulsive-gambling/symptoms-causes/syc-20355178

Signs and symptoms of compulsive gambling (gambling disorder) include:
    • Being preoccupied with gambling, such as constantly planning how to get more gambling money
    • Needing to gamble with increasing amounts of money to get the same thrill
    • Trying to control, cut back or stop gambling, without success
    • Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down on gambling
    • Gambling to escape problems or relieve feelings of helplessness, guilt, anxiety or depression
    • Trying to get back lost money by gambling more (chasing losses)
    • Lying to family members or others to hide the extent of your gambling
    • Jeopardizing or losing important relationships, a job, or school or work opportunities because of gambling
    • Resorting to theft or fraud to get gambling money
    • Asking others to bail you out of financial trouble because you gambled money away
Unlike most casual gamblers who stop when losing or set a loss limit, people with a compulsive gambling problem are compelled to keep playing to recover their money — a pattern that becomes increasingly destructive over time.

Some people with a compulsive gambling problem may have remission where they gamble less or not at all for a period of time. However, without treatment, the remission usually isn't permanent.
