    My Trip Report

“He who makes a beast out of himself eases the pain of being a man.” ~Samuel Johnson.

    SATURDAY, 6-15-2019

We returned to Mecca today, after a 9-month absence. We flew on Delta PIT-MSP-LAS, and everything went very smoothly. Although, upon reflection once we got settled into our room it seemed like the day had been a lot like work. I blame the 0300 wake-up. I didn’t get any cute photos of our Husky moping over the suitcases, as he was checked into the kennel before we packed. Mrs. Syringe Monkey (“J”) spends two weeks staging our gear, based on a Master List and several sub-lists. When it’s the evening before we leave, it all goes into the suitcases.

The plan is a 5 night stay at The Cosmopolitan, booked with Marriott points. We pay resort fees and taxes, coming out at about $400. Not a bad deal. We booked a Studio Terrace, and upon check-in were Bonvoy upgraded to a one-bedroom terrace. Sunday is J’s birthday, and she wants to have lunch at Luke’s Lobster, and then a shopping spree at Fashion Show Mall. I have a huge surprise for on Monday, but you’ll have to wait to see what that entails just like her, because I know she’ll be following this.

No fountain views available, but we’ve got a decent view of the strip, and the airport. On the 56thfloor of Chelsea tower, we can watch the planes takeoff with our morning coffee. The room itself is pretty great, even with the expected absence of drawers for socks and gutchies.

On the plus side, we have a refrigerator for personal use. That’s filled with a case of water and a bottle of wine. After we picked up the rental car, we went to The Egg & I for brunch. I had, of course, the Eggs Benedict. Very, very good, but the Hollandaise was a little too buttery for me. It was 12:30 pm, and they were focusing on lunch, so maybe that had something to do with it. It was still delish. J had half of a Chicken Apple Walnut salad sandwich and a bowl of Chicken Tortilla soup. I tasted the soup, and it was excellent.

Then we went to WalMart to stock up on booze and snacks. When we got out of the car, we were approached by two young women who asked us if we had a “nickel for a dime”. Umm, no. As we walked into the store, they were asking another random guy the same thing. He fished around in his pockets, gave them a nickel, and received a dime in return. No one got hit over the head or robbed, so we are really perplexed as to the goal of this scam (which it has to be, right?). Giving away half of your change? What? I even Googled it, but nada.

Anyways, once we settled in, we had Happy Hour in the room. After we chilled with dranks for a couple hours, we wandered down to Secret Pizza. We decided we weren’t going to do anything tonight, as we were both really feeling the day catch up to us. I’ve always wanted to try SP, and it was a huge disappointment. I understand that it’s probably really good drunk 0300 food, but it was bland and overpriced. The pool crowd was crowding the place, and when we entered, we saw an empty stool were someone had clearly pissed themselves. They must’ve gotten up and left while still pissing down their leg, because there was a trail. I found this hilarious, as I am very entertained by abnormal psychology of every variant, but J is not as appreciative of this behavior as I am. “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves” she said…lol.

Not the pisser. At least not yet.

We still had our below average slices, then walked around the casino floor. We were looking for the large Big Bang Theory machine that @ardee saw in May, and we found it. Of course, being Saturday night it was in play. Well, we were on fumes at this point, having been up 20 hours. We headed back to the room, where J crashed immediately for the night. I had a few more dranks, then crashed hard as well. All in all a good day, and although it ended too early…we’re in Las Vegas. At the Cosmo. Life is good.

Maybe that's why @ffejry kept finding socks laying around the casino on his recent trip! :D

Great start! I hope your trip's a winner!

Nickel for a dime... I would assume they were selling weed or looking to buy weed and using this lingo to inform you of that.

Okay. I'm thinking that some guy directly from the pool sat there and perhaps wrong his suit out? I would choose to think that given the alternative.

I'm excited you've decided to surprise the Mrs with a jaunt out to Minks in Henderson on Monday, Syringe (Mink's Gentlemen's Club, as you all know).

Monday's seem to be the best days given the theme and the liquor value.

    Minks.jpg
Please report back on how it all goes, as I've contemplated rolling out there on Monday's during past trips.

My apologies if I ruined the surprise.

    SUNDAY 6-16-2019

As our biorhythms are still on Eastern Standard Time, we were awake at 0500 local time. We laid around in bed till 0600, then we went out onto the terrace for coffee. A couple hours of this, and we got dressed and crossed the bridge and walked to Paris Paris. The Birthday Girl decided she wanted to have breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi, so that’s where we walked to. The patio was packed, even for 0800, but they found us a table and seated us immediately. J had a chicken, apple, and cheese crepe. It was not very good, as the wheat crepe was soggy and tasteless. I had the steak and eggs platter. My steak was grilled to a perfect medium-rare, but the eggs and hash browns could’ve been from any Denny’s. I guess you go here for the people-watching experience. For that, 10/10. We met a very nice homeless guy speaking in glossolalia, greeting each table along the rail for about a half an hour. The floor manager and our waitress called him by name and told him to GTFO, but he only did of his own accord. I think his beer was warm.

After breakfast, we walked back to Cosmo to get our car. J wanted to shop at Fashion Show Mall, so that’s where we went. I was a good Fiancé and carried her shopping bags. We had planned on lunch at Luke’s Lobster, but the inside was packed, and it was 106 outside by now. I was also dubious of seafood from a sidewalk stand. So we drove to Park on Fremont, where the hostess, who was so high she slurred her speech and could barely keep her eyes open, asked us for ID. Really..? We’re old enough to be your Grandparents! Not a good vibe, so we decided to just go back to the hotel and eat at The Henry. Great chioice…J had the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup, and I had the Short Rib Benedict. She loved her lunch, and the SRB was one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. It is legit “Holy Shit!” good.

We’re back in the room now, resting up for tonight. Ferraro’s for dinner, then finally some gambling. Oh, and thanks to @tdhoier for giving up my surprise. She saw your post, and I had to lie to her and say we’re just getting married by Elvis. She's locked in the bathroom, sobbing.

As it turns out, Pimpin' really is easy!

OK, so after convincing J to settle down and come out of the bathroom, we got ready for dinner. We took Lyft over to Ferro’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar, which is in a non-descript strip mall near the Hard Rock Hotel. Don’t let the façade fool you, it’s really, really nice inside. And, the food is fantastic. I started with the Bufala E Prosciutto, followed by the Spaghetti Aglio E Olio. The Bufala mozzeralla tasted like it was made fresh, and was the perfect complement to the thinly shaved prosciutto. The spaghetti was perfectly al dente, the roasted garlic EVO sauce was on point, and the shrimp I had added for protein was nicely seasoned with garlic. It was amazing. J started with the Ferraro salad, comprised of arugula, pistachio nuts, cherry tomatoes, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, shaved carrots, Parmesano Reggiano, and foglie balsamico dressing. Her main course was Pappardelle Mimmo, which included scallops, lobster, & asparagus, butter, sage, and truffle. We shared each other’s dishes, and hers was fantastic as well. Everything was flavorful, and cooked to perfection. This is a fantastic restaurant that I’d recommend to anyone. As for the wine list, it’s incredibly extensive. As in, a 5 pound book broken down by regions (Italy). Wine aficianados rejoice!

You just gained 10 pounds looking at this.
I almost forgot...when I reserved the table a few months ago, I mentioned it was J's birthday...they had a special tiramisu for dessert for her, and even though we were both stuffed full, we managed to annihilate it.

After dinner, we Lyft’d back to the Cosmo. We had full intent to gamble the night away, but after filling up on incredible pasta, losing a hundy on Big Bang (Fuck You, Sheldon) and another $50 on Heidi’s Beir Haus, we just weren’t feeling it. There are no photos of this world series of gambling, because no. So, we are back in the room, polishing of our handle of Tito’s. Tomorrow is a really big day.

The food from Ferraro's looks delicious. You're right, just looking at it is adding pounds.
