    Hello all,

Doea anyone ever stay at Golden Spike? Any concerns for a solo woman traveler? Not really a room person, as long as no bugs and shower works! Lol! Only been to Vegas twice (moved from east coast to Indiana) and played in AC at least 3X a month. Adding that I am mostly BJ player and UTH. Wanting to play some VP as a change this time...
    Thanks!

You won’t have to worry about bugs and the shower does work. It was an older hotel refurbished when the DTP took it over. No concerns for a single woman being there. You won’t be playing at the Gold Spike though as it is no longer a casino but Fremont Experience has a variety of casinos to choose from and is two blocks away and yes it’s safe to walk it.

You should consider El Cortez if you're a BJ player. Best BJ rules DT. Rooms are good. VP has been downgraded at El Co but short walk to 4 Queens as they now have best VP DT. There's no casino at Golden Spike.

How much do you play? If you play enough you may be able to get your room rate reduced. That is if you stay at a hotel with a casino. Unfortunately Gold Spike doesn't have a casino so no discounts.

But plenty of hotels with casinos downtown. Plaza, Downtown Grand, D, Golden Gate, Cal, Main St. Station, etc. to name a few.

I budget about 500-700 a day for gaming...not sure where that puts me in the whole scheme of things...I generally play BJ or UTH. Understand that El Cortez and 4Q are the best places for that? Also am thinking of trying VP this time. Where's the best downtown for a newbie? I was thinking the Oasis@GSpike because of the pool. But also started looking at DTG and Plaza. Any info on which of those-4Q/DTG/Plaza/EL Cortez ia most likely to do something on review at check out? Sorry so many questions! Thanks!

You're out of luck if you are going with Gold Spike since they don't have a casino anymore. (so no discounts or comps from your play).

$500 - $700 a day is a nice amount to gamble, if you gamble that much on the machines it is possible that you can get your rooms comped. Not so much if you only play the tables though.

As for best casino downtown, I will leave it to the other VMB members to discuss since I don't play machines as much so I don't ask for comps or cash back when I check out.

IMHO, I think the downtown grand pool is much nicer than the Spike's pool.

And I would recommend you looking at hotels with casinos since it is possible that they will give you some cash back at checkout based on your play.

Not a pool person but the best pools/casinos for the lowroller downtown is the DTG or the Plaza both offer a good selection of table games and slots and ok vp we currently have been staying at the DTG these last couple of years and have been treated very well with no problems, it's been a couple of years sense are stay at the Plaza we really liked are stay there and I read lately they been upping there game either would be a good choice.

Plaza has good VP tables and the pool area is really nice. Rooms are nice, only issue is a small bath area. A couple host that are there post on this board. Maybe email either Fed’ophlus or Gary and they may very well give you a nice rate just to try the Plaza.

    My vote is the Plaza.

Hubby and I are strictly slot players, and the Plaza has a nice assortment of slot machines. They also have all the table games as well.

Plaza has really stepped up to the plate in room remodels, casino updates, and they have some great food venue's, everything from a food court to a steakhouse. Their pool is getting some great reviews as well.

I would contact Curt or Gary at the Plaza. They are offering a promotion during July and August for Luxe rooms.

I would not consider the Oasis, too far off the beaten path.

Adding to my earlier comment, if you haven’t booked Oasis yet should book at a hotel with a casino to get the comps.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Gold Spike doesn't have a casino anymore.

I'm a big fan of the Plaza. As previously stated, pool area is great, rooms comfy, and the casino is fun. There is a variety of food options too.

It has been my experience, that they treat their customers well and I have never had a disappointing stay there. If you don't have a downtown home, I'd suggest you give Plaza a try.

Gold Spike can be found as low as $17 (before resort fee) on Groupon FYI---not sure the rates you found.

If the price difference for you is significant between Gold Spike and any other hotel downtown, Id probably still stay at GS and just gamble elsewhere. That way on your next trip, the hotel where you predominantly gambled at will be discounted or even comped.

A few years ago I stayed at the El Cortez Cabana suite paying reg price (my gfs first time in LV and I wanted her to stay downtown and the Strip) nonetheless with my minimal slot play there, they are always sending me free rooms in both the hotel and cabana section. This same goes goes for Downtown Grand (whose pool I think youd love because it has a genuine fun time feel)---gambled there once and they sent me heavily discounted rooms which paid off as beneficial last September when I was in town right before the Life Is Beautiful music festival where my friends paid over $150 a night to stay at Golden Nugget and I paid $19 a night at Downtown Grand.
