Vegas trip #55 May 24 - June 3, 2019

Friday, May 24th: It has been 6 months since trip #54. Too long for Laurel, just fine for me. Just have to keep in mind that we are now both 60 years old and to just keep plodding on as long as we can. Let’s get this one started… Normal 10-night trip. Spending first 4 nights at Nomad (resort fee only, $168 fixed cost). We had stayed twice @ Park MGM during the renovation and maybe our loyalty paid off. We were surprised that we would get this on a Memorial Day weekend. The next 3 nights are at Flamingo (free room+no resort fee). Thanks to VMB, we discovered how to use our M-Life Gold status to secure Caesars Rewards conditional Diamond Level. In addition to free resort fees, we have already used it to visit Diamond Lounges @Horseshoe (Tunica), Ak Chin (Arizona) and Horseshoe (Shreveport). Looking forward to what Vegas can offer us. The last 3 nights are at Orleans ($207 fixed). Not sure why she stuck with this place. The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend has been moved to the following weekend. Paid too much for plane fare ($908) and rental car ($389). Add in airport parking and bellman fees fixed is $1912. Daily variable is remaining $210. Per day so target budget for this one is $4222.

First night is usually scripted. Initial plan was to go Downtown tonight. Good Charlotte performing on Fremont Street. I had nixed it since I did not want to drive all the way back to Nomad late on a Friday night (and since we just saw them live at the Palms in November, 2018). So, we just hung around this area. Had a My Vegas Rewards so we had dinner @ Wolfgang Puck’s Cuchina inside Crystals. It was a pretty non-descript night. Construction of Park MGM just about complete so I checked out Eataly and walked around the Park. It was busy and everyone looked happy. I saw a band playing inside BratHaus, there was not one person listening to them. I think sometimes I am too empathetic. The machines here and at Aria took a toll on Laurel, so we were back in the room @ 9:30. How was our initial Nomad experience? I guess it was OK. It had its own valet and Bell Services. The guy followed us to the room which was . . . different. Not enough drawer space and no nightstands, but we managed as we always do. For some reason there is a soaker tub right next to the bed. We used it to house the cooler we brought. Day 1 variable: $297.00


Saturday, May 25th: Up @ 5:30. Knew we were facing east and I wanted to see the sunrise over the mountains but PH was in the way. Never did get back to bed. Spending as many days in Vegas as we do, you know there are going to be days when most decisions that are made turn out to be disappointing. Today seemed like one of those days. Vegas in May is always a wonderful time since always hot and pool time is prevalent. Not today--- staying at Nomad we knew we had our own pool, but it is a dayclub on the weekends and did not open til 11:00 so we opted for Park MGM pool. Today was not your typical weather, it was cool and windy. Laurel not too happy and I tried to make her stay too long (to no avail). All I did was try to keep all my stuff from blowing away and sat in the hot tub for a bit. I always try not to judge but, my Hot Tub mates were 2 ladies and 9 children (I counted). Kids were splashing around and 2 of them were eating cheeseburgers in there. Not my idea of good time!! Laurel was a trooper though and tried to take a dip in the heated pool, but once she got out, it was game over. As it turns out, we never got back to the pools here because weather did not cooperate. Tainted the 4-day experience. First meal of the day was @ Primrose inside Park MGM. The only reason we ate here was a My Vegas free appetizer with entrée. So, we split both. It was good but the menu is very limited and there were only a few other tables of people in the whole place. . . Next, we spent a bit of time @ Westgate. Tomorrow is the Indy 500 and Coca Cola 600 and I always have a little action on those. Westgate always seems to have better odds on a lot of events and have been coming here once or twice each trip lately. I also like that I can get Laurel away from the machines for a while. Their Race book is impressive with the cubicles and large screens so she will sit with me and bet $2 on the horses with the best names . . .What’s next?? We drove around trying to figure out what to do. Then we drove some more. Took picture of new stadium going up, and had a guy yell at me for driving too slowly! Final decision was to spend some time at Southpoint. Not sure how that came about, but it was a good venue to watch my Milwaukee Bucks lose to Toronto in the Eastern Conference Finals. After winning the first 2 games, they lost the next 4. It was very frustrating and added to the malaise of the day. We had dinner at the new “Eataly” back at Park. An interesting concept and the place was very busy. Options were a bit overwhelming for the state of mind of the day, so we split some type of flatbread pizza and an almond dessert from one of the venues. It was good and lots of people to watch. We were glad to see the day end @11:00 Day 2 variable: $212.


Sunday, May 26th: We have been in Vegas for 10 of the last 12 Memorial Days. With action on the 2 big car races of the day, it’s nice to have something to keep track of during the day. I am not a big race fan, but I have had some positives experiences in the past and would like to relive some of those feelings today. Not going to be pool weather until Tuesday at the earliest. With 10 days though, we will get our sun and fun unlike those who just came in for the Holiday weekend. My biggest concern is that with all this time to kill, it had the potential to get financially ugly. On to Paris for late breakfast/early lunch @ Mon Ami Gabi. A bit disappointed with a 45-minute wait, so had a baguette @ JJ’s Boulangerie. A fine alternative. It’s a great place just to relax and watch the people flow by between Paris and Bally’s. I had a bottle of tequila in my pocket so I kept coming back here and refilling my soda as a mixer while here. We were able to catch the end of the Indy 500 (loss) in the Paris Sportsbook. Laurel struck up a conversation with a couple from Kentucky. How surprised were we when he ordered 2 drinks from the cocktail waitress and did not bat an eyelash when she charged him $45 for the indulgence!! WOW! I also had found someone’s folio on the ground. He paid $30 to park the car, $344 for a Saturday Night and a $42 resort fee on Booking.com. I am always fascinated at what others pay for the same experience that we get. I hope they had a memorable time. Dinner was at Mi Casa inside Silverton with our Vegas friends. Always a Vegas staple for the 4 of us. Hadn’t seen them for 6 months so this is a great venue to catchup on life. We did finish watching the Coca Cola 600 while here. I did have a chance with Ryan Blaney (30-1) but alas, it did not happen. Rest of the night was back at home (Nomad) and I drank while she tried to lose the family fortune. Day 2 variable: $341 Not going too good.


Monday, May 27th: Spending as much time in Las Vegas as we do, it comforts me to see some things stay constant. I can turn on Fox 5 in the morning and see Jason Feinberg (news) and Ken Smith (traffic). Then I know I am on vacation!! This was our last day at Nomad and Laurel still extremely disappointed that all of her anticipation for a new pool has turned to crap. Determined to make the best of it, after prepacking for tomorrow’s move, we used the last of our $50 resort credit again at Eataly. What I found unusual is that it does not open until 11:00 so breakfast options here are Starbucks or go next door to New York New York. They do have breakfast @ Primrose but very overpriced for someone not on an expense account or just looking for a nibble. Anyway, we split some kind of fancy chicken salad sandwich and some ricotta fritters. Laurel really enjoyed both meals we had and the venue so I will just go with the flow…after lunch we stayed here for a while and I bet/watched some baseball while she actually had her first winning session of the trip. She needed something positive to happen. We spent the rest of our day visiting with our Las Vegas people. Their 2 daughters each have a new place to live and we were more than happy to drive and take the tour. To us, every subdivision looks the same as the next one. Totally opposite of Arkansas in both aesthetics and cost of living. We wish them well. Dinner was again the 4 of us, this time was Cheesecake Factory on Rampart. This place is always busy and never disappoints. Laurel and I split the Chicken Piccata she likes, and it was excellent. (Soapbox… there is a National Movement now that 40% of food goes to waste and so many people are hungry in this world. They want us to waste less. To me this is just a waste of time since almost all restaurants try to outdo the other by making portions larger and larger. Not even going to think about all the buffets. No one is going to change that!! I am surprised it is not higher than 40%). Anyway, the 4 of us used to go out gambling after dinner, but the older I get, the more I want to be back at home-base by 9:00. After her winning afternoon, I thought she would go to end the day as a winning one---I was incorrect. Day 3 Variable: $142.


Tuesday, May 28th: Moving day from Nomad to Flamingo. Will we be back? Don’t know. The worst part of the room was the shower. It either came out as a trickle at a decent temperature, or TOO hot at normal pressure. However, everyone was very nice to us so jury is out on this one. 4 nights was enough though. Best thing of morning is that we are now @ 81,000 M-Life points so have secured our Gold Status until 09/30/20. I know other folk have much higher rankings in the various clubs, but this one is important to us, for free valet and online hotel offers. Checked out of Nomad, got more beer, Diet Coke and Cheetos (staples) and on to Paris for lunch at Mon Ami Gabi. We had aborted this the other day, but no problem because the $40 comp we secured was good for 3 days. I felt like breakfast (fancy eggs benedict) but got there 10 minutes too late. Even though it was good, I was disappointed in my selection of the Truffle and Brie Burger. As it turns out, I could have asked for breakfast. Laurel had her quiche so at least she was happy. On to Flamingo. We have stayed here 6 times, but not in the past 3 years. It hadn’t fallen completely off the table, but had some issues. Bathrooms way too small, elevators were a crapshoot, she always loses here, had to get in line for the pool 45 minutes before it opened to get a good seat (and endure TSA-style security). Flamingo back on the radar since they have a Diamond Lounge for us to visit unlike Linq where we had been staying recently. Was able to check-in @ 1:00 (Nice). The room was outstanding. They just remodeled and they did it right. 2 great beds-plenty of closet space and drawers-refrigerator and coffee pot- electronic drapes and shears-best of all was the larger bathroom with walk-in shower that had extra jets. The bathroom mirror even has a built in TV!! WONDERFUL!! Best news of the day was that the sun was out so headed down to pool. Place was packed, and was rockin’ with a different demographic that yours truly. Never a deal breaker for us because the people watching is the best. The only place we could find chairs was back where the hot tubs used to be. For some reason they are now filled with sand? Then, the sun went away, clouds came and intermittent rain started. After blaming each other for our current misfortune, back to the room determined to make the best of rest of day. Plan for the night was to have our first Las Vegas Diamond Lounge, but did not happen. When I checked the details @ 5:20, they said only served food until 6:00. So, we just hung out for the night and had dinner @ Sticky Chicken. That is a food truck inside The Linq. We saw it on the last trip and put it on the to-do list. We liked the concept and it was very good. One word of caution though, it closed at 9:00 for some reason. Laurel having another one of those nights, she went to bed @ 9:30. Disappointed that the negative sessions far outweigh anything positive. I told her that is because the games she likes to play so much used to be $.25 to $.40 per spin and not are $.80 to $1 per spin. Anyway, I had a great night. I finally hit a couple of my baseball bets. When I woke up this morning, I was down $83 for the trip and now was ahead $13 for the 4 days---Business as usual. Day 4 Variable: $118


Wednesday, May 29th: Day dawned to bright sunshine so finally a pool day. Next 5 days to be sunny & hot. Breakfast was one of my favorites. She bought a travel toaster 2 trips ago so we made English muffins in the room. Are we cheap-frugal-smart-lazy? Draw your own conclusions! Today, we got to the pool 10 minutes before opening & using my VIP Pass (secured from spending on my Total Rewards credit card) we were the 3rd people to get in. All the folk who were waiting a long time to get in had to wait for us. I Imagine that would cause a problem some days. 4 ½ hours later we were packing to leave. We had a wonderful day just relaxing & looking at all the sights. Laurel also loves to bond with people in the water & today had no problem finding a captive audience. Tonight, we had our first Diamond Lounge experience. They just changed the name to Laurel Lounge. My wife, being named Laurel, thought they did it in her honor (sure they did). She had to use 2000 points to get us in, but we have almost 80,000 between us, so not an issue. Tonight, they served BBQ Chicken & rice. We didn’t care what it was. This was a perk that we never imagined having. I always feel we do NOT deserve to get the things we do---Laurel disagrees. We just know how to work the system without gambling that much. I had 3 Long Island Ice Teas and Laurel had a Bloody Mary & 2 vodka/cranberries. We ate our fill and talked with a bunch of people. It was a lot of fun. After dinner I went & bet the Memorial Golf tournament. I love to wager on golf and usually take some longshots while still rooting for Tiger or Rory. When I caught back up with her, she was playing a $.01 Megabucks machine $.30 at a time. First of all, that is never a good sign. Second of all, you better not hit the trigger for the $10,000,000 jackpot. So, what did I do? I did my first non-sports of the day and hit 636 quarters on some 5-coin $.25 machine. Did not see that coming!! It recouped all my baseball losses and made a profit!! The night’s entertainment was the “Bronx Wanderers” at The Linq. We had seen a rolling billboard the other day and it was on our free show list that comes with her Diamond status. It was an excellent choice, much recommended to us folk on the other side of 50. Afterwards she said she was tired (of losing) and was back in room before 10:00. This time I joined her since all I was going to do was smoke a cigar and drink 2 beers. I felt a little sorry for myself (and her). Our only nongaming expense of the day was $5 for the maid and $5 tip at dinner. Day 5 Variable: $29


Thursday, May 30th: Another day of opportunities await. I was up before 5:00 and facing east I knew I would see the sun come up over the mountains. It took its sweet time too but it was spectacular as always. Never did get back to sleep so I grabbed my coffee and went on an early morning walk. Over to Linq- across the street and strolled through Caesars-then Cromwell. I only got accosted by one “Lady”. She asked me where I was going? I usually have some witty retort, but came up empty this time. Back to room for English muffins and a little pre-pack for tomorrow’s move and 9:00 found us in the exact 2 pool seats as yesterday. During this morning’s pool session, I kissed her goodbye and using my VIP pass I went 1st to The Linq pool then over to Harrah’s. I had not been to Harrah’s pool for over 20 years. It was much nicer than I had remembered. It even had cushioned lounges. All I wanted to do was find a hot tub to soak my aching bones--- I was shutout. I had considered crossing the street and visiting Caesar’s pool (one I have never been in), but clouds rolling in and looked like rain was imminent. Laurel (in all her beauty) was stranded at the Flamingo pool with no room key or telephone. Nervous and concerned, I hustled back and we packed up and left, although it never did rain! Late afternoon found had us getting the car and driving 2 blocks down to Palazzo. We almost got rear-ended and still do not know how that guy did not hit us. Would have really put a kibosh on the day. Anyway, Happy Hour at Grand Lux is 4:00 to 6:30. So we split our all-time favorite food (Asian Nachos) and drank a couple of Stella’s. She loves Palazzo better that the Venetian so we stayed here for a while. After dropping her off at Harrah’s I parked car and just hung in the area for the night. Weather was absolutely lovely and while she played, I walked up and down (in and out) doing what I do best keeping an eye on all my losing baseball bets. Events I can recall for the night include 1) usual beer(s) and cigar 2) watched the volcano go off for the umpteenth time in my life 3) watched the Bellagio Fountains from the Cromwell bridge 4) watch peoples’ gambling exploits-- I have been called a cooler. Blame me if you wish 5) 2 sliders from White Castle-Casino Royale 6) Saw a homeless guy digging in a fountain for change 7) I think I gave a guy down on his luck $5 8) Checked on and kissed the wife a couple of times to see if she needed anything 9) late night cheese burgers from McDonalds. Laurel sounded a little pleased when she found out I actually lost more today than she did. Day 6 Variable: $224.


Friday, May 31st: Last moving day of #55. This trip was 4 nights-3 nights-3nights. We spend a lot of our trips packing and unpacking. We have been discussing the merits of a 5 and 5. Right now for trip #56 (Labor Day) we already have booked Aria (3) Linq (4) MGM (3). She is thinking Flamingo (5) and Excalibur (5). All I know is that she will be chomping at the bit on day 4 to change venues. Since I am nothing more than an unpaid consultant, whatever she chooses will be fine. Checked out of Flamingo then now what? I wanted breakfast somewhere and after the usual (exhausting) conversation we got it down to Black Bear Diner or Mon Ami Gabi or Earl of Sandwich or Peppermill or Mr. Lucky (Hard Rock) or Hash House (Linq or on Sahara) or Il Fornaio/America (New York/New York). Finally, 10:30 found us standing outside La Village Buffet at Paris. Only to discover that breakfast stopped at 10:00 and was now a $31 brunch--- ARGHH! So even though it was after 11:00 when we got seated, I was able to ask for breakfast back at Mon Ami Gabi. Morning salvaged. I got the Sausage Andouille Benedict and it was fantastic. I was just relieved that I got the positive experience I wanted and escaped any lingering issues between us… next stop on the day’s tour was our annual sojourn to Palace Station for the “Renaissance Bead Show”. Laurel loves to bead and this is an opportunity to get material that she can’t find anywhere else. I am happy that she gets to do this and we do leave lots of bracelets and earrings wherever we go for the service industries (maids-waitresses-clerks). It makes us feel good to give a little extra for great service. 2:00 found us checking into Orleans. Since we are spending actual money to stay here, I am not sure why she chose this since Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend is not until next weekend. After room setup, she went to gamble and I went to pool/hot tub for an hour. I was adamant that I did not want to spend the night here so an extended pool session (with her) was out of the question!! Bottle of tequila in pocket. I dropped her off at Excalibur, drove and parked @ Mandalay Bay and walked back. We hung in this area for about 4 hours. Dinner was a MY Vegas BOGO at Lupo inside Mandalay Bay. We love sitting in their outside patio and watch the world stream past. Dinner was excellent. I usually just have an appetizer for dinner but here I always get the Osso Bucco. Being a BOGO, I had been instructed to get the most expensive thing on the menu which increases the value. She chose Steak Pizzaiola in a marinara sauce. In any event, even with a BOGO (and a Milano Mule for her and a specialty draft beer for me), it was still $99, but worth the experience. Day 7 Variable $194.00


Saturday, June 1st: Last evening before bed I kissed Laurel and told her that we had a good one in case something happened during the night. I am far from being a hypochondriac, but as the night progressed, with each deep breath that I took there was a discomfort under my left rib cage. It felt worse this morning. Determined not to ruin her vacation. I decided to shorten my breathing and ignore the problem--- so I did. 6:00 a.m. found me sitting at a cubicle in the Orleans sportsbook drinking coffee and writing in my vacation journal. What surprised me the most this morning was how many people were gaming. At some of the fancier places, folks are few and far between this early in the morning. I am happy for all involved. Back to the room, shagged her up, reconciled the money as I always do, and toasted the last of our English muffins. 9:00 found us at the pool for an extended session. Orleans pool is much more serene that the other ones we frequent. It has a hot tub, open until 9:00 p.m. and music is not blaring so conversation can be had. There is a couple of nice areas with fake grass and shade . . . all things that appeal to old people!! Mindy (our local friend) joined us this morning and the girls gabbed until 3:30. They had lunch at the pool (Pizza and chicken tenders). Prices here are more than reasonable and the quantity/quality is always spot-on. Me, I had a $2 hot dog from the sportsbook food cart, always a favorite. I slipped in and out all day checking on my baseball scores and golf leaderboard. Laurel and I both doing what we love to do…. Not much happened the rest of the day. We had dinner with Mindy and Bill at the Ellis Island BBQ (staple). We have learned to pay the $5 split plate charge since one entrée is more than enough food, all (including $2 craft drafts) were excellent. The girls played a bit afterward. She did not do too good, but it is what it is. I was proud of myself for not giving her the obligatory lecture (Lose it at a property that does us some good!!). Having sworn off baseball after the losses of this morning, I bet St. Louis (-1.5 +220) in the Stanley Cup Finals. So, Bill and I sat and talked and watched Boston win 5-2. Back to Orleans to finish off the night. I was amazed that even this far off the strip, the smell of marijuana was prevalent in the air. But we never see anyone smoking it!! Day 8 Variable: $277.00


Sunday, June 2nd: Last full day. I notice that I still have some tequila, a little Baileys, and 3 Stellas left. I wonder how they would taste all mixed together in a big glass? I never found out. Same pool scenario as yesterday except we're out of English muffins. I snuck in my bottle of tequila to mix with Diet Pepsi, & having given up on baseball & hockey, NASCAR was next on the agenda. Luckily the race was on the TV at the pool bar so I was able to watch it from time to time and see the little money I wagered on 4 drivers go down the tube when Kyle Busch took yet another checkered flag. All that I was happy about was that after an auspicious start of this vacation, we were able to get 4 days with substantial pool time. The initial plan for tonight was to see the Las Vegas Aces play or see Miss Behaven (free diamond show @ Bally’s). Neither happened. So, we drove to Westgate & she stayed in car so I could make my US Open, British Open, Green Bay Packer, & Milwaukee Brewer futures. Since she did not know what she wanted to do, I went to the area I wanted to. . . back to the Linq. On the last night, I want to take in as much ambience as I can while she plays. Between Cromwell and Casino Royale is perfect place to say goodbye to our favorite city. Dinner was at Guy Fieri’s (points). She had wanted to try one of the other Laurel Lounges that are available to us, but she ate lunch too late at the pool to make it worthwhile (I Told You So). We hadn’t eaten here for quite a while mostly because of their lack of portion control. I am NEVER impressed by the mounding piles of food that most places do in order to make their places memorable. I convinced her to split the Lobster Lollipops appetizer and agreed to dessert if we were still hungry. We shared a piece of Whiskey Chocolate Cake for desert (a very rare occurrence). Guy Fieri’s turned out to be a great time and we got to sit on the patio on a gorgeous evening and watch people milling around. Back to Orleans where during her session Laurel got her largest win on the trip playing $.05 Video Poker ($117). We were both happy because being down over $600 on day 5 she logged only $882 for the whole vacation (good girl)! Day 9 Variable: $30


Monday, June 3rd: Time to head back to Arkansas. Another trip where we are safe and sound is all that matters, I was right to ignore my chest pains from the other day because they went away. We constantly count our blessing that we can do all that we do. Not flying out until 1:45, so breakfast was on tap. Initial plan was Il Fornaio at New York New York, but opted to stay here and eat at Copper Whisk. Nice, and hanging here was a great choice. We are in the planning stages of a trip to the Bahamas in October. Since this year is probably the only time we will have our elevated Caesars’ reward status, we intend on taking advantage of any fee nights offered at Atlantis. We also found out that Baha Mar is now affiliated with Boyd Gaming. So, I went to VIP services here to see what offers are available there, but the lady had no clue as to what they were. I felt a little bad because she was watching a cartoon on her computer and I think I disturbed her. We will figure it out on our own!! Day 10 Variable: $62

Final Wrap-up:

· Surprised to see so many dogs walking around in the hotel and restaurants with their owners
· I used over 15,000 of my hoarded Caesars Rewards points. Very unusual, Laurel used 2000
· I wore my VMB bracelet every day--- one day I hope to spot another
· Repeat of Nomad probably not going to happen
· Betting exotics in baseball (First inning-run line parlays-alternate run lines) bad for my psyche
· Hardly took any pictures this time. We keep doing the same things
· Losing 18 pounds since the last trip was nice since all my clothes now fit nicely
· Jury still out as to whether this is my last trip report for a while since I do 3 a year and we
repeat a lot of food/experiences!

Another great TR i love how yall bounce around and do Vegas in a fun way. Another Westgate fan here and if you're betting futures it's the place to be. You were due for a bad sports betting trip given your recent multi trip successes...reversion to the mean!!! And of course you'll continue with the TR's as many of us look forward to them. Enjoyed another of your fine trip reports, you guys have a great system. I admire how easily you shift gears to Plan B when plan A doesn’t gel, and love your little side comments along the way!

Glad the pains went away, if they keep recurring, please get it checked out. (I speak from experience with a beloved family member).

I have severe A fib of the heart, was taken to emergency and was within 2 hours of dying, so please do not ignore chest pains, back pain, or shortness of breath. I had no prior symptoms, except the day I went to the ER, I had a very hard time breathing.

 

She says we do, but planning at doing that over Labor Day. Thinking Gordon Ramsey at Paris of BLT Steak @ Ballys

Very nice trip report! I enjoyed seeing your daily financial breakdown. Glad you got pool weather on the latter half of your trip. Hope you and Laurel make it to the Bahamas in the fall...I've always wanted to go to Atlantis.

Spending 30 days a year in Vegas I have learned that if you keep good accounting, things never get out of hand...… We have never stayed at Atlantis, we usually hang across the bridge @ Cable Beach but that has all changed when Baha mar finally opened. If we don't go this year, we may never get back.

Loved your report as usual Jeff. Stop with those exotic sports bets, lol. We need to put our heads together and pick some NFL winners during our Thanksgiving trip this year.
